Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  1. The Death of Baseball?

Remember a couple years ago, when it seemed all the media and sportswriters were all but writing baseball's obituary? Football is America's #1 sport and always will be, they said. Even NASCAR has the chance to top boring old baseball. I may be wrong, but it seems like the sport has only gained popularity over the last couple years. With different teams winning the WS, a lot of teams in the wild-card races, and in increase in parity, it seems like fans are really enjoying baseball now. Last...

  2. Carlos Pena can flat out HIT!

Just hit his 39th home run on a 3-run shot to give the D-rays an 8-1 lead over the bosox. Looked like a change up on the outer half about knee high. WOW! To dead center in Fenway. Still 29, he looks like a late bloomer. Man, could you have imagined if he had shown more last year and we had kept him? He's darn good on defense also.

  3. Mike Hargrove takes over his former semi-pro team in Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- More than two months after abruptly stepping down as manager of the Seattle Mariners, Mike Hargrove has decided to take over the semi-pro summer team in southwest Kansas he played for more than 30 years ago. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AnLe_JIGdhBYU7x9JNN5dP0RvLYF?slug=ap-hargrove-newjob&prov=ap&type=lgns I don't think that this should go in the Mariners thread because he's no longer the manager of the Mariners but this really makes me mad and annoyed...

  4. Matt Holliday: MVP Candidate?

  5. Is Dice-K the next Hideki Irabu?

Hideki Irabu's first full season 13-9 4.06 ERA 173 Innings Dice-K's first season so far 14-12 4.44 ERA 184 Innings Just an interesting stat comparison I saw posted on another site. I was on the "Get Daisuke" bandwagon all offseason, but looking at these #'s, we may have dodged a huge bullet by not getting him. What do you guys think?

  6. Zito launches fund to help U.S. troops

Zito spent the day visiting patients at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., as part of the kickoff for his Strikeouts For Troops program, which will provide funds to assist with family travel and housing expenses...

  7. Home Field Advantage?

I've heard this on M & MD and I just watched them talk about it on ESPN 1st and 10 with Skip Clueless. I've NEVER seen this before or heard of it before those two instances. Does the team with the best record in the league get to choose who they play now? If so when was this rule instituted...I hadn't heard of this before the season and would like to know if this is just speculation or if MLB has actually put this into effect.

  10. McGwire Sets Another New Record!

Mark McGwire set another major league record yesterday by hitting 20 homeruns faster than anyone in MLB history. He hit 20 in 35 games breaking the previous record held by none other than Mickey Mantle. Mick did it in 41 games. The amazing thing about Mac's feat is that he was out a whole bunch of games with his back problem. The guy is phenominal. Also what it tells me is what a terrific athlete Mickey Mantle was. I you think about player conditioning today vs in Mick's day Mickey...

  11. The Wave

I went to Shea yesterday for the first time ever. Not a bad ball park. However, when I was there I had a question. The wave. How long has the wave been happening? And why would someone want to start the wave when the Houston Astros or a visiting team is up to bat? Wouldn't that be pumping up that team? Shouldn't that start when the home team is up?

  12. I'm a Baseball Kid

Editor's note: Will Jauss, the 11-year-old son of Los Angeles Dodgers coach Dave Jauss, lives every kid's dream: He gets to hang out with a Major League baseball team all summer. Will shared some of his experiences with Yahoo! Sports. Email Will at willjauss@yahoo.com. Normal kids see their dad every night when he comes home from work. Normal kids spend their summers at camp, the beach or staying home with their families. I spend my summer in Los Angeles, 3,000 miles from our home in Boston,...

  13. Looks like McGwire won't make it in

At first thought I don't think he should get in, especially on the first try, but this article really made me think more. Simmons can be good when he tries. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/070103

  15. Philles Closer Brett Myers Gets Into Scuffle with Reporter

This happened after Myers gave up back-to-back HRs to blow the game against the Padres in Philly last night. Myers said something about the HRs "looking like pop-ups off the bat", and that is was a "good pitch"...which a reporter questioned...then chaos insued: http://podcast.kyw1060.com/kyw/627822.mp3 This is funny, because I always thought Brett Myers would only fight with women. Anger management, anyone?

  19. What is so special about the Cleveland Indians?

I find myself scratching my head a bit at all of the hype that the Indians are receiving. Seems like virtually every preseason power ranking that I have seen has them as one of the top few teams in baseball. It appears that they are, yet again, the sexy pick this upcoming season. (Haven't they been it for like the past three years now?) Anyway, I don't expect them to be poor, but I don't see them nearly as good as other people do. Yes, they have some very good offensive players in Sizemore...
