Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  5. Strasburg signs - MLB deal, 4 years / $15.67M

From Aaron Fitt at Baseball America: http://twitter.com/BaseballAmerica/status/3376193396 I honestly thought that the Nats were going to have to pay through the nose to get Strasburg - at least $20M. Good deal for them assuming he's everything we've heard.

  6. Why do the umpires expand the strike zone on 3-0 and 3-1 counts?

I see this happen nearly every game. A pitcher will fall behind in the count until it is 3-0 or 3-1, and as long as he doesnt miss drastically with the next pitch it is a strike. And the same thing seems to happen on 0-2 and 1-2 counts. You practically have to throw it over the middle to get a called strike in those counts, at times. Although I see this happen less often.

  7. Neftali Feliz

Has anyone else been following this kid? He is emerging onto the scene in rockstar fashion, similiar to Joba in 07 (below), but with more K's. He has 2 hits to his 16 strikeouts. He is going to be a SP next year, but its going to be interesting to see how Texas handles this youngster and if it is anyway similiar to Joba's development. The kid is only 21. The videos of him are amazing.

  10. The Florida Marlins Rotation is Fun to Watch Thread

The Marlins sure have some studs in the rotation at this point and yes it is still early in the season. But that rotation has really been a joy to watch, especially since they are not in the Yanks division or league for that matter (though they are set for interleague play this year). I just really think it is fun to watch guys like Volstad, Sanchez, and Johnson. Volstad in paticular with that nasty curve. I'm really hoping they wreak havoc on the Mets and Phillies :D .

  11. Tigers acquire Aubrey Huff

The Tigers say they've acquired Aubrey Huff for minor league pitcher Brett Jacobson. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4405359 Huff's OPS+ this season is a sparkling 87. My question is what position will he play? Cabrera is at first base. The recently activated Carlos Guillen can't play LF.

  12. Crazy Idea

Let's say you had to face a lineup of alternating righties and lefties late in the game and didn't want to burn your bullpen, could you bring in two relievers to put one in left field and one on the mound and to switch them between batters and not have to take either out of the game? Has this ever been done before?

  13. Cubs-Phils beer incident.

Victorino was doused with beer as he shagged down a fly ball last night. Guy circled in red tossed the beer. Douchebag in yellow apparently taunted Victorino..while the one in red had the "Me!?" look going on. It apparently worked, as the security apprehended the guy in yellow.

  15. Is Chipper Jones a Hall of Famer?

A few friends and myself tonight got on the topic of the Hall of Fame....and Chipper Jones name came up. And we got on a good debate of whether this guy is a HOF'er or not. We were divided. I didnt have his stats on hand, but I know the guy has been unbelievably consistent for a long time now...and has had many good to great years. So I came home and checked his stats--I'm convinced he's a definite HOF'er. What does everyone else think? To help you out, here are his career stats and some of his...

  16. Poll: Travis Hafner Cooked - Yea or Nay?

Travis Hafner was one of the top 2 or 3 offensive producers in baseball over a 3 ear stretch from 2004 - 2006. Better than Manny, better than Vlad, better than Ortiz, better than A-Rod. He has had some fairly debilitating injuries, including a broken hand (awful news for a hitter), and most recently shoulder surgery performed by Dr. Andrews this past October. His OPS+ dipped majorly in 2007 to 118 after the broken hand. While that drop was startling (he averaged a 170 in the period...

  17. Kuroda and Wright - nailed in the head

Today, both Hiroki Kuroda (who was working on a 2 hit shutout) and David Wright were both hit in the head; both had to leave the game. Kuroda was hit with a comeback liner and dropped instantly to the ground. After several minutes, his neck was stabilized and he was taken off the field on the injury cart. Apparently he's doing fine at the hospital and doesn't have any permanent damage. Wright was hit in the head by a 95 mph Matt Cain fastball and plummeted to the ground, where he remained...

  18. Reds Bronson Arroyo: I could be on '03 positive steroid list

Bronson Arroyo, a 2003 Red Sox teammate of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez , said yesterday he would not be shocked to discover his name on the list of 104 major league ballplayers who tested positive in the spring of 2003 for using performance-enhancing drugs. His reason may shed light on what may have happened to Ortiz in 2003, as well. Back then, Arroyo said via phone from Cincinnati, he was using both androstenedione, which was not banned until the 2004 season, and amphetamines, which were...
