In the past, I’ve generally not seen much of a point in doing pre-draft prospect rankings. After all, can you really have that much change between the time you do your preseason rankings and early June? Rather, is there going to be so much change that you need to do lists before and after the draft? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking anyone who does do it whatsoever, just saying that, most of the time, it wouldn’t occur to me to take the time to do one myself.

This year, however, there really has been kind of a lot of change in the Yankees’ system. Most notably of all, they’re added a top ten prospect as pitcher Rafael DePaula has finally gotten his visa issue scheduled, but there have been a number of notable performances amongst various other prospects, for better or worse, and this list really will look quite different from my preseason list in a few places. So, without further ado, here are my updated rankings of the Yankees’ top 30 prospect heading into tonight’s draft.

Last month, Charleston outfielder Tyler Austin was the run away choice for our Prospect of the Month feature. This month, there was no such clear winner, but there was also no shortage of good candidates for the distinction. At Charleston, Austin continues to swing a hot bat, while Angelo Gumbs, Dante Bichette Jr., and Gary Sanchez also continue to do damage with the lumber. In the upper levels of the minors, Corban Jospeh did nothing but hit for Double-A Trenton before earning a promotion to Triple-A at the end of the month. At Triple-A, Ronnier Mustelier has been one of the big pleasant surprises of the season, and though he’s already 27, he’s working himself into the territory of being a real, if fringey, prospect. In the end, however, we decided to bestow this month’s honor on Tampa reliever and strikeout artist Mark Montgomery.

Beat me to it. Nova's one of the few Yankee pitching prospects of recent vintage to be allowed to rack up fairly substantial MiLB innings a la how Tampa

Nova averaged 144 innings his last three complete minor league seasons. That doesn't include any playoff innings either. IMO, the Yankees didn't baby

Coming off TJ, way too early to say he has crashed and burned but org. being careful. Pitching in Tampa right now, presumably because of the April cold
