The new playoff format creates a new opportunity for additional teams to contend for a postseason berth, a fact thatís likely to reduce the number of clubs looking to sell off rental players at this yearís deadline. One team that wonít be helped by much of anything this season is the Cubs, and one player thatís almost guaranteed to be traded to a contender is starting pitcher Ryan Dempster. According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Yankees are one of the teams interested in acquiring Dempster.

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reports that Ben Sheets recently had a throwing session for interested teams, and that the Yankees were one of the clubs who sent a representative to watch the right-handed pitcher show off his stuff. Sheets, a former standout for the Brewers before injuries derailed his career, hasnít pitched in the majors since he made 20 starts for Oakland back in 2010, but at just 33 years old would understandably like another chance to resurrect his career.
