    Cashman: Joba to be activated tonight

    Via Marc Carig, Brian Cashman indicated that Joba Chamberlain will make his return to the Yankees tonight. “That’s the intention,” Carig quotes the general manager as saying. Joba would be taking the place of the recently traded Chad Qualls, and I would assume Ramiro Pena would be optioned down to the minors to make room for Casey McGehee.

    The Yankees might not have wound up getting Ryan Dempster after a long day of waiting, but they did get the infielder they were after. Joel Sherman is reporting that the Yankees have acquired Casey McGehee from the Pirates in exchange for right-handed reliever Chad Qualls. Works for me.

    On the eve of the trade deadline, Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman fielded a question about rumors that the Phillies were looking to trade Cliff Lee to free up payroll space and perhaps add some young players to their top heavy roster. Cashman’s response was something most of us probably never expected to hear come from a Yankees’ GM with a straight face.
