Apparently it is not a good day to be a Yankees’ starting pitcher. Just hours after we learned that C.C. Sabathia would be hitting the disabled list for the first time in his tenure with the Yankees, Andy Pettitte was forced to leave today’s game in the fifth inning after being struck in the ankle area by a line drive. Pettitte hobbled around and attempted to stay in the game, but he was clearly treating the right foot/ankle very gingerly, and limped off the mound after delivering a pitch. At that point Joe Girardi decided to play it safe and call on his bullpen early. Hopefully it’s just one of those things that hurts like the Dickens, and Pettitte will be able to make his next start as scheduled after treating the soreness.

Big news ahead of this afternoon’s finale with the Indians: the Yankees have announced that they’ve placed C.C. Sabathia on the 15 day disabled list with a strained left adductor muscle (in his upper leg). Sabathia indicated that he began feeling pain during his last start Sunday night at Citi Field, but didn’t say anything about it until after his bullpen session yesterday. The good news is that it’s merely a Grade I strain, and the plan according to Joe Girardi is for Sabathia to miss two starts and return after the All-Star break.
