The early word late this morning was that Freddy Garcia would step in to start for the injured C.C. Sabathia this Friday night. Apparently there’s been a change of plans, however, because Garcia entered this afternoon’s game in relief with two outs in the top of the fifth, following Andy Pettitte’s early departure due to injury.

Apparently it is not a good day to be a Yankees’ starting pitcher. Just hours after we learned that C.C. Sabathia would be hitting the disabled list for the first time in his tenure with the Yankees, Andy Pettitte was forced to leave today’s game in the fifth inning after being struck in the ankle area by a line drive. Pettitte hobbled around and attempted to stay in the game, but he was clearly treating the right foot/ankle very gingerly, and limped off the mound after delivering a pitch. At that point Joe Girardi decided to play it safe and call on his bullpen early. Hopefully it’s just one of those things that hurts like the Dickens, and Pettitte will be able to make his next start as scheduled after treating the soreness.

"Hitterish" is not new, nor was it coined by Cone. Apparently, it goes back at least to Dizzy Dean, if not to Babe Ruth:
