    Joba Chamberlain appeared in an actual minor league game this morning, working an inning to officially kick off his minor league rehab stint as he attempts to return to the big leagues following both Tommy John surgery and a severe ankle dislocation. Joba worked one inning for the Gulf Coast League Yankees, facing the Pirates in Bradenton. He threw 23 pitches, allowed one unearned run, and struck out two batters without giving up a hit or a walk.

    Mariano Rivera tore his ACL on May 3rd of this year, and immediately most of us assumed his season was over. The Yankees officially maintain that he won’t pitch again in 2012, but one doctor working with Mo now, Dr. Keith Pyne, told Joel Sherman that he thinks it’s possible that Rivera could actually return at some point this season.

    All right, I’ll just go ahead and admit it: I hate the All-Star break. Not the game itself, which is still a fun little diversion from the grind of a six month long regular season. Not the Home Run Derby either, even though I find it to be pretty boring, as I recognize that I’m not exactly the target audience for that event. And I actually really enjoy the Future’s Game, even if I wish they’d move it to Wednesday when there’s nothing else going on rather than putting it up against real baseball games on the Sunday before the break.

    No, what I can’t stand is the dog and pony show that we engage in every year leading up to this half-week break in meaningful games.
