Yes, there will be more jokes about the Yankees’ age as the newly acquired Ichiro Suzuki is 39 years old. He is the same age as Raul Ibanez, part of the platoon in left that Ichiro will be replacing. And it is not like Ibanez is going away. Ibanez and Andruw Jones will go back to mostly the DH position, which is where they belong. The one loss of the deal is that Ibanez and Eric Chavez will not be in the same lineup as often. But Ichiro adds a speed element to the Yankees’ offense that has been missing since Brett Gardner‘s elbow started hurting. And Ichiro compares somewhat favorably to what Gardner brought to the table.

It wasn’t necessarily a scorching debut, but Ichiro Suzuki put his mark on his first game as a Yankee in front of the fans who have called him their own for his entire career. After receiving a standing ovation after being announced for his first at bat and respectfully bowing to the Safeco Field crowd, Ichiro laced a single back up the middle for a single, then proceeded to steal second base. He would wind up stranded at third, and that would be his only hit of the night, but he fittingly recorded the final put out of the game for his new team, as they defeated his old team 4-1.
