Cano is AL Player of the Month
Second baseman records .664 slugging percentage for Sept.

In September, players kick it into overdrive in an attempt to push their teams into the playoff hunt. When there's something more on the line -- say, a batting title perhaps, or a division championship -- athletes will excel even more.

Robinson Cano has maintained that he wasn't concerned about being the best hitter in baseball, he was just happy to be able to contribute. That didn't stop the Yankees' second baseman from turning on the heat in September, batting .373 (41-for-110) to win American League Player of the Month accolades.

...snip...

This was Cano's first Player of the Month Award. He edged out Oakland's Frank Thomas (.265, 10 homers, 31 RBIs) in the voting, as well as Twins outfielder Torii Hunter and teammate Alex Rodriguez.

Congrats to Robbie.

He's quicky becoming one of my favorite players, one of the guys I'm happy to see step into the batters box because I know he can make something happen.

I haven't bought a new "number" T-shirt in awhile; I'm starting to think a Cano shirt will be a good investment...

Congratulations, Robbie!

Remember last year when I asked who you would prefer... Brian Roberts or Robinson Cano, and I was chastised for even suggesting the comparison? Now I ask again. Is there ANYBODY who would prefer Brian Roberts, assuming that next year his elbow is back to normal? Next year look for a bit of a lower BA, but considerably more power and perhaps 100 RBIs and maybe a gold glove thrown in. I love this guy. And to think that no one saw him coming in that absolutely putrid minor league system that the Yanks had...

Yeah I remember that. It went something like this: "Lorretta walks more, therefore he's better."

how many Yanks have been players of the week or of the month this year- a few already, despite the losses of Sheff & Matsui.
A-Rod for one. Giambi??

A-Rod and Jason won a month this season. If Derek didn't, I don't know how, but I don't seem to remember him doing so.

What an amazing run for Cano. He's been an RBI beast, driving them in left and right. Hopefully he'll hit another bases-clearing double or two in the playoffs ;).

Roberts did have a very good season in 2005, there is no shame in anyone thinking Cano would not approach that level, considering professional scouts and analysts (including the Yankees) also did not. Not that I'm skeptical, but it is very difficult to hit for high average/high power in baseball, I'd like to see another similar season from Cano (as you mentioned, with a likely lower BA, and more slugging and walks too). As far as a GG, he still needs to hurdle superior defensive players like Roberts & Ellis, amongst others.

After being on the DL for much longer than originally anticipated I was impressed to see how well he rebounded.

It's pretty ridiculous that the #9 hitter is the player of the month.

Yea, his numbers compare well to Soriano's.

1st Season
Cano: .297/.320/.458
Soriano: .268/.304/.432

2nd Season
Cano: .342/..365/.525
Soriano: .300/.332/.547

This accolade and the fact that Jeter and Cano are the first middle-infield teammates in modern baseball history to bat over .340 in the same season makes it even better.

Let's not throw out Soriano comparisons. You may have seen Sori go 40-40 this year. Robinson will never do anything like that, regardless of how good of a player he becomes.

Speaking of #'s, if I am a yankee rookie, I want an even # with a 2 in it. #2, #20, #22,
# 28, # 42. All those numbers have worked out very well. I would make sure Hughes gets something with a #2

Nobody is expecting 40/40, but it bodes well that Cano's first two years have been better than Soriano's first two.

Frankly I could care less if Cano ever steals 40 bases. But he definitely has the potential to be a better hitter than Soriano.

Congrats to Robinson...one of my favorite Yankees -- I have loved that kid from day one..I'll be wearing my Cano shirt to the game tomorrow with pride. :)

More congrats go out to Cano for being nominated for the Roberto Clemente award for his work with sick children..he's even the main character in a children's book because of it -- go Robbie! :)

Congrats Cano, the DL layoff seemingly had no effect. I guess the sophomore slump consisted of him scrunched down on his couch healing up for the playoffs. Glad to have you back.

40-40 is so horribly overrated. Soriano gets thrown out on the basepaths so often that he'd be more valuable never running at all

Take a look at the ARod thread for all the irrational hate. People kill him for going 0-4....yet they ignore when Sheff and Cano go 0-4.
