The name of the new Houston Franchise in the MLS is the "1836," commemorating the year when the city was founded. When I first heard it, my reaction was negative (just as it was when I first heard "singular" names for teams i.e. "The Heat"). On reflection though I kind of like it.

EDIT: I also like that their team president is named Oliver Luck.

Does anyone think the fans/local sportswriters will shorten the name to be the "Thirty-Sixers" or something? I'm sure at least fans will do it.

So this year's team is the 2006 1836. Yea, dumb name.

I wonder if people reacted like this when Philadelphia got a NBA team?

I didn't think the MLS was doing well enough to expand.

I like it. But I still don't like soccer.

I think what the MLS is trying to do is name the teams in the league in a similar way to European teams. DC United is obviously a reference to Manchester United, Real Salt Lake (as far as I know there are no Spanish royalty in Utah) is a reference to Real Madrid and this team must be a reference to some of the German teams with years for their names.

I thought this thread was the sequal to the "Houston 500" porn flick. 1836 would be impressive.

The name of the new Houston Franchise in the MLS is the "1836," commemorating the year when the city was founded.More broadly, 1836 was also the year of the battle at the Alamo, the battle of San Jacinto and of Texas winning independence from Mexico. That may have more to do with why they picked that name than simply the founding of Houston.

Don't most of the games end with a score of 0-0, and then are decided by who had the most 2 handed over the head inbound passes or something?

As much as I love sports, soccer is pretty boring. I try to force myself to watch only USA National Team games aka the Olympics/World Cup.

what a crappy name! im a huge fan of soccer. Which is unusual in North America these days. This new name.. just brings more disgrace to the already dwindling sport today.
