Newsday is reporting that the Yankees are thinking of picking up Piazza for one year as DH. Nice for PR but what does this do to the rest of the folks who are our DH? Bernie?

That's not really what the article says. All it says is that Cash didn't specifically shoot down the idea. He certainly indicated the yanks have little interest though. As discused at some length in the hot stove forum, they really shouldn't have interest.

The Yankees already have plenty of guys who can DH on this team -- all they really need at this point is an upgrade to Bubba Crosby at the 4th OF position to round out the bench.

Piazza is unnecessary.

If we didn't have Stinnett this would be somewhat more viable. However: Defensively, he is not a great catcher much less a decent fielding first basemen. He wouldn't make a good option to give Giambi a night off at 1st base or Posada behind the plate - at least not defensively. He's another station to station baserunner to have coming off the bench. He's another Bernie Williams heading towards the end. Do we need two of them? At least Bernie can switch hit. All he is at the moment is a big name to add to the lineup. We don't need another. Giambi, Sheff, Bernie are all potential DHs. Upgrade Crosby.

If it means Bernie wont Dh and wont have a lot of at bats, I am all for it.

If he signs, can we make sure that he never wears Winfield's #31, which he'd worn as a Mut?

Will all the Muts fans return the Piazza jokes we'd given them for 7 years?

First Team Italy now possibly Pinstripes!

We dont want him on the Red white and blue squad and we certainly dont want him in pinstripes.

Well, according to the Daily News the Yankees aren't interested in Piazza.
"The Yankees' response was that there was no room at the inn."

There is a good thread about this in the Hot Stove Forum, and of course I did not realize PinEstripes is what the yanks wear. By the way, the thread title is very misleading, it comes off as Piazza is a Yankee, add a question mark or something.

Yet he's been here two years longer than you. I admit, this thread title scared me when I saw it but its nothing to get rude over.

It's a shame that Piazza can't find a job. I'm sure he has a little more to give, but there's just no room in the Bronx. I will always remember him as a great hitter when he was healthy. The problem is defensively, he's Jason Giambi or Alex Sanchez in catcher's gear.

If he had any pride, he 'd retire, instead of going around the majors with hat in hand. He was always a classy guy, and I hate to see him reduced to the baseball equivalent of a panhandler.

as long as he dons the Pinestripes and not the Pinstripes, i'll be happy

Don't be too quick to think this is a bad idea. Personal feelings about Piazza aside, this would not be a bad move. The guy can flat out hit. He can also be a decent backup for catcher should it come down to it. We all know he can't throw runners out for sh*t but he's not a terrible catcher. He calls a good game. Obviously this is not any type of priority for the Yanks but in no way would this hurt the team. it can only help. And for the right price, I am definately for it.

Please no.... I like Piazza but he is exactly what the Yankees don't need. A hitter that is very unathletic and plays station to station on offense.

It can absolutely hurt the team, because it makes it much harder for us to DH Sheff and leaves us investing 2 roster spots on guys who can't contribute defensively. If we dumped Stinnett, then Piazza would make sense. Backup catcher, part-time DH. There'd be value there. But if we're going to have two catchers already, then we really need a guy who can play the outfield and hit better than Crosby. With Bernie on the roster, we simply don't have room for another guy who doesn't play the field.

That doesn't mean much. He's had an account since 2002 and not made very many posts.

At any rate, Piazza is probably desperate just to get a deal with any team he can. Is his price that high? Maybe he and Bengie Molina could shoot pool together this season.

it'd probably be best to change the title of this thread... it's very misleading (not to mention there's one glaring spelling error)

If he can help to void Posada's 2007 option, then I wouldn't be that against it.

if we dumped Stinnett maybe...but then how are you going to feel the first time Coco Crisp, better yet David Ortiz, steals 2nd standing up

I'm pretty surprised it hasn't been changed yet, or deleted, seeing as how there alreayd is a thread on this and it doesn't belong in this thread anyway.
