There's a new stamp issue, "Baseball Sluggers", to be released by the U.S. Postal Service in the summer. Four players will be featured: Roy Campanella, Mickey Mantle, Hank Greenberg, and Mel Ott. Don't know if there are any other stamp collectors here, but I thought the Mickey Mantle fans here would be interested in this information.

I am not a stamp collector but it is nice to hear that.

You have a link to this? I only have this, which doesn't show the players' names.

Please see the article I'd posted earlier (following "2nd thought").

Roy Campanella
Mel Ott
Hammerin' Hank Greenberg

Someone sent me a pic of the 4, but it's just over the 50k file size limit, so I can't attach it until I get home.

Very nice. I wonder how they picked the players. Here is a link to a photo

Yankeebot, thanks for posting the link to the stamps.

As for how the players were chosen, there's actually a committee, the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee, that reviews proposals from the public for new commemorative stamp issues; here's a link if anyone is interested in reading about this: http://www.usps.com/communications/organization/csac.htm

I believe that there was some kind of semi-organized effort to get a stamp honoring Hank Greenberg, who was with the Detroit Tigers during the '30s and '40s and was considered the first Jewish baseball superstar. I don't know if there were similar efforts for the other players, all with NY teams, Ott with the Giants, Campanella with the Dodgers (for those of you who might not already know these players' team affiliations), and Mantle.

The previous baseball-related stamp issues, see links, http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/browse_content/pressRelease.jsp?CURSOR=144, and http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/browse_content/pressRelease.jsp?CURSOR=109 were very popular with collectors and baseball fans alike, so I'm not at all surprised that some more baseball-themed stamps are being issued.

Speaking of stamps, don't forget that it now costs 39 cents to mail a letter first class!

This is a nice idea. Mantle: one of the best baseball players ever. I think I'll order myself a copy of these stamps when they're available.
