Hypothetically...

If we could get Damon for 4 years at 13 mil a year (overpaying on the cash end but keeping the years down), and trade some of our stray pitching for a Wilkerson/Michaels type to push Sheffield to DH, would that not be a good scenario?

I definitely agree about most of the arguments regarding Damon, and he'll never touch Bernie in his prime, but he's still a very good hitter and has shown no signs of declining thus far. In addition, 13 or 14 mil a year for 4 years does not handicap us much with the young talent coming along with the big contracts coming off the payroll in the coming 3 years.

Bumpin this since I'm buying lottery tickets tomorrow

It better be a front loaded deal. Do we lose no #21?

If this is indeed true it is NOT the end of the world.

Please, no one jump off the ledge.

Hmmm.... Not sure what to believe. If I am not mistake, this same TV station did report that Pedro had signed with the Red Sox last offseason, so I am not sure how reputable of a source this is.

4 years is 1 year too much than I wanted to go, still hes better than Bubba and who cares if George wants to spend his money on Damon then sobeit.

The way I see it, get 2 years out of him, sign Andruw after 2007, shift Damon to lf...we be alright.

If true, I expect insult to injury, with the Sox getting Reed, I really wanted him.

I am VERY interested to see if Cashman indicates that it was all his decision. It seemingly goes against everything that he has done this year. It also makes me question his abilities, as one can only begin to grade him since he was given control.

Also, if NOT his decision, then he had full control for about 5 weeks.

Well, Damon is certainly an upgrade at CF and leadoff for at least the next 2 years. After that - who knows....

I would have preferred something like 3/$39-42M instead of any 4y deal, since we would be less likely to be stuck with a declining player - but we should wait and see (a) if this is in fact true and (b) what the terms of the deal are before we get all crazy....

In the short term, this certainly weakens the RS - and raises the price for Jeremy Reed and/or Coco Crisp.

You have to think it's gonna cost Arroyo and not Clement at least to get Reed, and more likely Arroyo/Clement + big time prospect (Marte, etc) to get Crisp. At least Mark Shapiro is no dummy....

OUr lineup looks to be set:

Damon cf
Jeter ss
ARod 3b
Giambi 1b
Sheffield rf
Matsui lf
Posada c
Cano 2b
Williams dh

Cairo
Stinnett
Phillips
Crosby
??

Now, do we trade the surplus pitching for a bat and make Williams the designated PH?

Newsday and Rotoworld reporting 4y $52M....

Damn - 1 year too many.

Was ok with 3/39, but 4/52 - we're gonna have another Bernie on our hands at the end of it....

That Boras is good.

BTW, SOSH have a few new nicknames for Damon:

The Anti-Christ
Judas
Captain Shaveman

LOL - too damn funny!

:P

John Hayman has been pimping for Boras for 2 weeks now. I hope he gets a cut of the action. Screw you George Steinbrenner.

WOW. $52M, I expected $44M, $45M. He got 5 years of money for four.

Just amazing. Completely unexpected, completely demoralizing. I thought 3/30 was his value. Boras truly is Great.

Guys at SOSH are cracking up over there. They are all giddy about getting Reed, and laying out cash elsewhere. The Red Sox certainly seemed to drive the heck out of Damon's price tag. It will be very interesting to hear what the Sox actually put on the table. I wish I did not see this until morning, I will be up all night.

Since there has now been confirmation of the Damon signing from multiple sources, let's continue the fun in the "official" thread: http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread.php?t=91949
