View Full Version : Unnamed options thread

I decided to start a thread that would discuss potential options outside the current mindset of the Yankee hot stove fan and maybe even the FO. Plenty of threads get started about random players but slowly disappear maybe we can keep this one alive to discuss players that might not be All Star options.

Two names come to mind for me, that I believe could significantly help us. If we can't get a quality lefty out of the pen how about Damaso Marte, the WS seem pissed at him:

http://www.suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-sox18.html

Sox might have to stick with Marte

With the Cubs agreeing to terms with free-agent left-hander Scott Eyre on Thursday, the idea of Damaso Marte remaining with the White Sox grew stronger...Marte, who struggled late in the season and into the playoffs, was rumored to be on the trading block if the Sox could lure Eyre back to the South Side, where he pitched from 1997 to 2000...Marte is scheduled to make $2.25 million in 2006, the final season of his contract, although the Sox have club options for 2007 and 2008 at $3 million for each season. Marte angered manager Ozzie Guillen a number of times this past season for actions on and off the field. He pitched while hurt in June and eventually landed on the disabled list, then arrived late to a game in the final month of the regular season and was suspended for four games...Marte is 14-12 with a 2.78 ERA and 31 saves in his four seasons with the team and has averaged 70 appearances per season during that span.

My other thought is instead of playing a boatload of money for Brian Giles and playing him in rightfield and DHing Sheff what about saving a little bit of money and inking Reggie Sanders two a 2 year deal...Sanders hit .270 with 21 hrs and 14 sb's in JUST 295 at bats. Saving a little money on this end could allow us to kick a little extra to BJ as we try to convince to be a setup guy or maybe give us a little flexibility to be able to get BJ and Farnsworth.
I know this doesnt solve our CF problem but if Sanders and Sheff are in the lineup rather then Sheff and Tino/Sierra which we had last year I will feel more comfortable with having Crosby or an Endy Chavez type in CF.

I'm just trying to think a little outside of the box here.

keeping with the idea that Cashman likes misdirection, we could end up with Ichiro for Pavano, Womack and a minor leaguer.

2. just can't be as good as he's been the past couple

My feeling is that Cashman has some ideas that we have no idea about yet if we don't get Giles. I feel confident with the team in Cashman's hands, so I'm really not worried. My biggest worry is Ryan wanting to close, because no matter what Cashman can do, there is noone available as good as him. However, like I said, I have confidence in what Cashman has in store for this team, so I will sit back and watch it unfold.

Seems like every year I say that about Sanders, and every year he proves me wrong.

You're right though - he's bound to crash and burn at some point though - most likely as soon as the Yankees sign him. ;)

I play fantasy baseball, and he's always there in the 12th or 13th round of the draft, and I always pass him up. Two weeks into the season he's got 5 or 6 HR and a half dozen stolen bases...

I think he has talked to the Royals and maybe the option of getting some DH time is appealing to him in his elder years.

In fact, I think I heard this morning that Arod asked for a trade to the Royals or Rockies because he wants a better chance to win... :D

The Royals are not our competition for players.

What's the chance the Yankees take a look?

Also, Josh Beckett to the Rangers for Blalock? Why not jump in and send Pavano to the Rangers for Blalock?

Easy because Beckett is younger, cheaper, and better. Pavano won't get that done.

Where would the Yankees put Blalock? That would either result in a) Jeter switching to 2B/CF and/or b) Cano being traded and neither one of those are happening.

Jumping in and trading Pavano is the right idea...but you have the wrong team...After this trade goes down, send Pavano, Crosby, and Proctor to FLA for G. Mota and Pierre. Then trade Pierre (who the White Sox want) to CWS for CF Aaron Rowand and LHP D. Marte. Then resign Gordon and that fills out our pitching staff like this...

Randy
Moose
Chacon
Wang
Wright

Small
Sturtze
Mota
Marte
Gordon
Rivera

With Cameron in San Diego, what would it take to get Dave Roberts?

Kenny Williams has stated in the past he likes Proctor.I wonder if Scott and a B prospect could harvest Marte ?

Rowand's a better CF than Pierre; much better defensively and more power offensively. Rowand + for Pierre makes little sense (the Sox' interest in Pierre makes little sense, although the media suggests it's real).

I could see something like Rowand-Pavano-Overbay if we don't sign Konerko (although the Sox would still need a hitter). If the Brewers need cash, Sox may have to throw in Marte somewhere.
The Sox and Brewers would be taking risks on untested players from AAA in the starting lineup, but well-conceived risks, imv.

I meant that it could be a sign he is interested in moving to the AL if he is talking to the Royals.

Roberts would be a great fit for the Yankees as a 1-2 year stopgap. If they sign Giles, then he could be the #9 hitter, and if they don't, he could bat leadoff. His numbers might go down from .275/.356/.428 because IMO Petco helped him because of the huge gaps and the fact that he doesn't hit for power anyway.

This was from an article about the Marlins inquiring about Brian Fuentes from the Rockies. Looks like they have two guys available that could help the Yankees...

http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_3235152

The Rockies continue working on a multiyear deal for closer Brian Fuentes, rebuffing teams that have asked about him in trades. The Marlins inquired and have let it be known reliever Guillermo Mota and catcher Paul Lo Duca are available. The Rockies like Mota, who is a Dec. 20 non-tender candidate. The Marlins would have to eat a majority of Lo Duca's remaining $12.5 million contract for the Rockies to consider a deal.

Although LoDuca would be an expensive backup...

If we can get LoDuca, he would and should be our starting catcher and Posada becomes full-time DH.

Brian Cashman started strong this winter, signing two brilliant free-agent deals - his own, then Hideki Matsui's - before hitting the Yankees' longtime hurdle. Some players just won't consider New York.

It'll never be like the dark days of the early '90s again, but some ballplayers prefer smaller cities, warmer weather, lower prices, less taxes and no pressure.

For this reason the Yankees' bullpen plans are going awry. Scott Eyre rejected the Yankees for the Cubs, Jose Mesa told them he won't come, and Yankees people aren't confident they can lure Bobby Howry or Kyle Farnsworth, either. They offered Tom Gordon two years for about $10 million to return, but he's saying he wants three years, and he may want it elsewhere, anyway.

While B.J. Ryan's agent tells the Yankees they're still alive, Ryan's telling folks he wants to close (and he doesn't love Lee Mazzilli.) The Yankees may soon be moving to the second tier; Julian Tavarez, Ricardo Rincon, Joey Eischen and Mike Myers.

I would like to bring up the name of Braden Looper. I wonder how much it would take to get him in here. He would be a good arm and maybe we could get him on the cheap.

I'd like to get Marte back, still can't believe we shipped him out for Enrique Wilson (hindsight of course).

I always get behind the Yanks but I truly did not like having Manny & Pedro's lackey on this team.
