BOSTON -- Alex Rodriguez saved an 8-year-old boy from serious injury when he prevented the youngster from getting hit by a truck.

The New York Yankees star said Thursday he was standing in a crosswalk on Newbury Street near downtown Boston at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when he saw the boy starting to run across the street into the path of an onrushing truck.

Rodriguez reached out and grabbed the boy, pulling him back and preventing a serious accident.

"The kid was going to get run over. I just kind of put my arm out and stopped him," he said.

It turns out the boy, named Patrick McCarthy, was already a fan of A-Rod.

"This guy just put his hand in front of me and stopped me. ... He said 'Whoa, watch out, buddy,' " McCarthy said in a television interview Thursday. "I was like, 'Wow! Like I was shocked, because he's my favorite player on the Yankees."

Rodriguez said he also had to hurry to avoid being hit by the truck -- "I almost got it, too," he said -- which he estimated was traveling 40-50 mph when he saw the boy starting to run from the sidewalk.

He said McCarthy's mother saw what happened, but he didn't see the boy's father nearby.

"I did it and I just kept walking," Rodriguez said. "I don't even know if she knew who I was."

Tuesday was a day off in the middle of New York's three-game series against the Red Sox that ended Thursday night with Boston's 8-5 win.

Rodriguez said the boy would have been seriously injured or killed had he gotten past him.

"That was a train wreck waiting to happen," he said.

Rodriguez has often been booed at Fenway since he joined the Yankees last season. Teammate Derek Jeter didn't think Rodriguez's heroic act would make Red Sox fans like him any more.

"They didn't sound any different today," Jeter said.

My first thought was "hey way to go A-rod, that ought to help all your negative press". Then I read the article and it almost seems like he is trying to pat himself on the back and make it into a bigger deal. He seems to be making himself sound more heroic. Any thoughts ?

A-Rod is so fake it makes me sick...I really thought he was going to break out this year, but I don't think it's happening...I am really afraid that the Yanks won't win again with the likes of A-Rod in pinstripes...he continues to be the anti-Jeter...plus he has purple lips.

And were you looking for him to be on your team just a little while ago? Too bad they couldn't trade Manny. :O

Besides, what's so fake about stopping a kick from being flattened by a truck going 40-50 mph? If it were a 250cc motorcycle doing that speed with a 100 lb driver, the kick would also be dead.

actually no...I've been a Yankee fan since birth...I have two cats named Matsui and Sheffield and I watch every yankee inning possible...and I just happen to think A-Rod is bad for the Yankees...there have been so many articles written about A-Rod and how fake he is...how overly concerned he is with his appearance and what people think...in my opinion he's fake...his numbers with the Yanks have been pretty good...I know he's has damn good baseball skills, but I think there's something to "true yankee" thing...he's more talented than any Yankee in my lifetime (and maybe any player in the game), that includes Jeter, Sheffield, Paulie and Matsui...but my question is, who would you rather have at the plate with the ball game on the line? Who would you rather field the last slow roller as Mo saws someone off with two outs in the ninth? A-Rod is not my answer.

Look, he's human. Humans make mistakes--lots of 'em.
The non-NY press hates his guts, because the evil Yanks "stole" him from the Red Sox. They magnify his failings--wait for him to fail.

My father (also a pharmacist) put it perfectly, I think:

"Hey, all I know is that when they (the press) write something about something that I do know about (pharmacy), they're wrong more than half the time. Why should I believe that they do any better when they write about something I don't know about?"

Don't believe everything you read. :)
