To answer your question about the transaction limitations, Hitman23:
There is no limit to how many transactions you can make (as of right now).
You do not have to pay for your transactions.

ok....
sorry for all the questions. I've never done an auction league so I wanna get to know the environment. It's very different.
How are FA picked up? 1st come first served? Always on waivers and the end of the week the team with the least points gets first priority? Or is it a running Waiver priority depending on your previous moves? Or do you have another way?

A player gets dropped, and he goes on Waivers for a couple of days. After that time he becomes a free agent.
For waiver claims there is a waiver priority list. Any player claimed on waivers will have a salary of $10 OR his salary before being dropped; whichever is HIGHER.
Example 1: Orlando Cabrera get dropped last year and had a salary of $17. If someone puts in a waiver claim in on him and wins, then his salary with the new team is $17.
Example 2: Same case but the dropped player was salaried at $6. Whomever wins the waiver claim has that guy at $10 now.
All FA will be salaried at $10. First come, first serve.

So you need to have money left over after the auction to sign players? I assume you get a credit for the salary of the player you drop.....

No, you can go over the cap to sign FAs.??? really?
I think I'm gonna wait for all the rules to be posted. I have too many questions...
I would like to suggest though, and it's fine if everyone doesn't agree, having bench players are important. at least 2 or 3.
From the main forum:
BEHOLD! I give you THE CONSTITUTION...
>gasp!<
I. TEAMS AND ROSTERS
1.1. There will be ____ teams in the NYYFans Baseball League consisting of a mix of American and National league players. Each team will consist of 27 players (23 starters and 4 minor leaguers).
1.2. A team's roster consists of the following players:
· 5 outfielders
· 2 catchers
· 1 second baseman
· 1 shortstop
· 1 second baseman or shortstop
· 1 first baseman
· 1 third baseman
· 1 first or third baseman
· 1 utility player (non-pitcher who can be any offensive player)
· 9 pitchers (any combination of starters and relievers)
· 4 minor league players (any position)
1.3. There is a minimum innings requirement for all staffs of 900 innings. Anyone who does not achieve 900 innings, will be placed last in the categories of ERA and WHIP.
II. AUCTION
2.1. Each team must acquire 23 players at a total cost not to exceed $260 (not real money). A team need not spend the maximum.
2.2. Teams will nominate players for acquisition in random order.
2.3. The following players are eligible for the major league auction:
· Any players who are on a major league 40-man roster and are still with the major league club at the time of the auction
· Any players who are not on a major league 40-man roster but are projected to start the season on the major league squad and can be confirmed by at least half of the owners present.
2.4. If an ineligible player is selected in the auction and his ineligible status is not declared at the time of the auction, league executives have from the end of the auction until twenty-four hours before the start of the first game of opening day to uncover this error. If the error is uncovered, the team who selected the illegal player must pick a replacement player from the free agent pool. This replacement will count as a free agent in all aspects, including the $10 salary and counting towards the free agent limit. The ineligible player will then be released outright and cannot be resigned until such time he is legally eligible.
2.5. The team bidding first opens with a salary bid of at least $1 for any eligible player and the bidding proceeds at minimum increments of $1 until only one bidder is left. That team acquires the nominated player for the final bid amount. The process is repeated, with successive owners nominating players to be bid on, until every team has acquired a squad of 23 players by requisite position.
2.6. No team may make a bid for a player it cannot afford. For example, a team with $3 left and two openings on its roster is limited to a maximum bid of $2 for one player. (Leaving $1 for the other unfilled roster spot.)
2.7. No team may bid for a player who qualifies only at a position that the team has already filled and that team has already fulfilled its utility position.
2.8. After an owner acquires a player, he immediately chooses the position that player will fill. Players eligible at more than one position may be shifted during the course of the auction.
2.9. The salary of a player acquired in the major league auction is his final bid amount.
2.10. Following the major league auction, a four-round minor league draft will take place to pick the four minor league players for each team. In the first year of the league, the order of selection in the first round will be random and will be reversed in subsequent rounds. In all other years, teams will draft in reverse order of the previous year's finish for all rounds of the minor league draft.
2.11. The salary of a player drafted in the minor league draft is $5.
III. POSITION ELIGIBILITY
3.1. A player may be assigned to any position at which he appeared in 20 or more games in the preceding season. If a player did not appear in 20 games at a single position, he may be drafted only at the position(s) at which he appeared most frequently.
3.2. Once the season is underway, a player becomes eligible for any position at which he appears at least 15 times.
3.3. The position eligibility of minor leaguers who have no major league experience will be determined by their projected fielding position for the upcoming season. This position must be confirmed by a minimum of 5 owners present at the minor league draft.
3.4. Once the season is underway, a minor league call-up who is signed as a free agent and has no prior major league experience will qualify at (a) the position he played in the minors if he is signed before he actually plays a game or (b) the first position he plays in the field in the major leagues if he is signed before he plays 5 games. After 5 games at one position, the usual position eligibility rules take effect.
3.5 A player shifting positions in the off-season WILL NOT be eligible at his old position if it is clear that he has been moved to his new position for the duration of the upcoming season. He will however, gain eligibility at his old position if he plays 15 games there during the course of the upcoming season.
IV. FEES
4.1. BASIC: The entrance fee is $25. (subject to change)
4.2. All fees must be paid within one week of DRAFT DAY! Unless arrangements have been made, commissioner has right to freeze rosters until fees are up to date.
4.3. All transactions made throughout the season are free.
V. PLAYER SALARIES
5.1. The salary of a player does not change unless the player becomes a free agent, or is signed to a long-term contract.
5.2. The salary of a player acquired in the major league auction is his auction price.
5.3. The salary of a player drafted in the minor league draft is $5.
5.4. The salary of a player called up from the free agent pool during the season is $10.
5.5. When a player is claimed off waivers, his salary either becomes $10 or remains the same, whichever is higher. If the player clears waivers (i.e., is not claimed), then he becomes a free agent. If he is subsequently acquired, his salary becomes the same as a free agent, $10.
VI. PRIZE MONEY
6.1. All fees shall be paid promptly, collected, and wisely invested by the League Commissioner, who is empowered to subject owners to public humiliation and to assess fines as needed to insure payments are made to the League in a timely fashion.
6.2. The money shall be divided among the first three teams in the final standings as follows:
· 3rd Place: None
· 2nd Place: More None
· 1st Place: The Most None
.
VII. STANDINGS
7.1. The following criteria are used to determine team performance:
· Composite Batting Average
· Total Runs Scored
· Total Home Runs
· Total Runs Batted In
· Total Stolen Bases
· Total Wins
· Total Saves
· Composite Earned Run Average
· Composite pitching ratio of walks and hits to innings pitched (RATIO = (BB + H)/IP)
· Composite strikeouts
7.2. Teams are ranked from first to last in each of the ten categories, and given points for each place. For example, in a fifteen-team league, the first-place team in a category receives fifteen points, the second-place team fourteen, and so on down to one point for last place. The team with the most total points wins the pennant.
7.3. In case of ties in an individual category, the tied teams are assigned points by totaling points for the rankings at issue and dividing by the total number of teams tied.
7.4. In case of ties in total points, each team involved in the tie is compared to all other teams involved in the tie in each individual category. One point is given to each team for leading in a category. The team with the most points using this method wins the tiebreaker. If, after this method is used, it is still a tie, the tie stands.
VIII. STATS
8.1. CBS Sportsline will be the recommended statistical service chosen and will constitute the official statistics for our league. Any problems with statistics/player moves etc. must be reported to the Commissioner within 7 days.
8.2. The effective date of any transaction for purposes of statistical calculation is the day of the transaction if the transaction occurred before Noon Eastern time. If the transaction occurred on or after Noon Eastern time, it is effective the next day.
8.3. Performance statistics of a player shall be assigned to a Rotisserie League team only when he is on the active roster of that team.
8.4. Standings and Transactions will be tabulated daily on-line and available on the Internet.
8.5. All regular season statistics from Major League Baseball, including any extra games necessary to determine playoff teams, will be included. Statistics from Major League Baseball's playoffs are not included.
IX. TRADES
9.1. From the completion of the major league auction until the first day of the major league season, rotisserie league teams are free to make trades of any kind without limit and without position requirements.
9.2. From the first day of the major league season until midnight of All-star day, rotisserie league teams are free to make trades of any kind without limit, so long as the active rosters of both teams involved in a trade reflect the required position distribution upon completion of the transaction. This would include subsequent pickups, drops, etc.
9.3. From the Wednesday after the scheduled All-star game through August 31, trades may take place freely between teams within 2 spots either way in the current standings. No other trade may take place (1st place may trade with any of the 2nd 3rd or 4th place teams; Last may trade with the 2nd 3rd or 4th last teams).
9.4. No trade may take place from September 1 until the last day of the regular season.
9.5. Trades made from the last day of the regular season until two weeks before the major league auction are not bound by the position distribution requirement.
9.6. No trade may take place from two weeks before the auction until the auction. Trades are official once both sides have posted the trade online.
9.7. There are no limits to the number of trades a team may make during the season.
9.8. Minor league draft picks and auction money may not be traded at any time.
X. WAIVERS
10.1. Any player may be released at any time by his rotisserie team.
10.2. When a player is released, he is placed on waivers for 7 days. Within those 7 days, the lowest placed team to claim the player acquires the player. The most recent standings shall be used to determine the lowest placed team.
10.3. When a player is claimed off waivers, his salary either becomes $10 or remains the same, whichever is higher.
10.4. After the 7-day waiver period has passed, if the player has not been claimed, he immediately becomes a free agent and is available to all teams.
10.5. The team who waived the player cannot claim the player off waivers. That team must wait until the player clears waivers and becomes a free agent before reacquiring the player.
XI. FREE-AGENT ELIGIBILITY
11.1. Any player who is on an active major league roster, not owned by another rotisserie team, and not currently on the waiver list may be acquired as a free agent. Minor league players, players on the disabled list, and players not on a major league roster are not eligible to be acquired as a free agent.
11.2. No free agents may be acquired between the last day of the previous season and Opening Day of the current season.
11.3. Free agents may be picked up from Opening Day of the season until midnight on the second to last day of the season.
11.4. After a player is released to the free agent pool, he is eligible to be claimed by all teams on a first-come, first-served basis.
11.5. Each team is limited to a combination of 40 free agent and waiver acquisitions per season.
XII. THE RESERVE LIST
12.1. A team may replace any player on its 23-man roster who has been placed on the Disabled List, sent down to the Minor Leagues, been designated for assignment, or been released by his major league team.
12.2. A reserved player is removed from a team's active roster on the day the transaction was recorded, if it was recorded before Noon Eastern time. If the transaction was recorded on or after Noon, the player is removed from the team’s active roster on the next day. The player is then placed on the team's Reserve List.
12.3. There is no limit to the number of players a team may have on its Reserve List.
12.4. Reserving a player protects a team's rights to that player.
12.5. Once a specific action has been taken to remove a player from its 23-man roster (via release or placing him on the Reserve List), a team is then free to activate a player from reserve, its minor league roster or select any eligible player from waivers or the free agent pool. The salary assigned to a player selected from the free agent pool is $10. When a player is claimed off waivers, his salary either becomes $10 or remains the same, whichever is higher.
12.6. Once a player has been activated from the Disabled List, called up from the minor leagues, or acquired by another major league team, that player must be recalled from the Reserve List within 7 days. For example, if a player is recalled from the DL on Friday May 5, he must be recalled by Friday May 12. If the player is not recalled within this time period, he will be automatically placed on waivers.
12.7. There are no limits to the number of Reserve/Activate moves a team can make in one season.
12.8. A suspended player may not be placed on the reserve list. If a player is suspended by Major League Baseball for seven or more days, he may be waived, but not reserved. If a player is suspended for six or less days, he must remain on the active roster of his rotisserie team.
XIII. MINOR LEAGUES
13.1. Following the major league auction, a four-round minor league draft will take place. In the first year of the league, the order of selection in the first round will be random and will be reversed in subsequent rounds. In all other years, teams will draft in reverse order of the previous year's finish for all four rounds of the minor league draft.
13.2. Only players who qualify as a rookie in the major leagues are eligible for the minor league draft.
13.3. When a player is drafted in the minor league draft, he is placed on the team's minor league roster. This protects a team's rights to that player.
13.4.1 If a player drafted in the minor league draft is activated by his major league team prior to September 1, the team has 7 days to activate that player. If the player is not activated within this time period, he will be automatically placed on waivers.
13.4.2 Minor leaguers called up prior to 9/1 to fill a roster spot created by a Major Leaguer going on the 15 day DL are not required to be activated or waived unless they remain on the ML roster when the DL'd player returns
13.4.3 Minor leaguers called up prior to 9/1 to fill a roster spot created by a Major Leaguer going on the 60 day DL are required to be activated or waived within 7 days.
13.5 Once a player is activated by his rotisserie team, that player loses his minor league status.
13.6. If a player remains on his team's minor league roster, he is not bound to a contract.
13.7. A minor league player may be retained from one season to the next without his salary counting towards the team’s $260 salary cap.
13.8. Each team has a maximum of four minor league players he may retain from one season to the next. In the minor league draft, a team may only draft enough players to reach the four-man minor league roster limit.
13.9. Once a player is activated, waived or reserved from the minor league roster, he cannot be put back on the minor league roster. The only way a player can return to a minor league roster is if he is drafted in a subsequent season's minor league draft.
XIV. ROSTER PROTECTION AND CONTRACTS
14.1. From season to season, each team must retain between 7 and 12 players, excluding minor league players. There is a limit of 4 minor league players a team may keep from one season to the next.
14.2. The names of the players being retained must be recorded on distributed worksheets with the league secretary by midnight exactly two weeks before the next auction. No trades may take place from the time the worksheets are due until the auction.
14.3. After two seasons (a season is defined as any part of a major league season) of a player being owned by any rotisserie team without having been released to the free agent pool, the player must be signed to a long-term contract, given his option contract, or released. Players who have been in the minor leagues from Opening Day through August 31 are not bound by this restriction. Their service time does not begin until they are called up to the major league roster during the season before September 1.
14.4. If a player is released, he is made available to all teams in the next major league auction.
14.5. If a player is given his option contract, his salary remains the same for one season. After that season is complete, the player must be released and made available for the next major league auction.
14.6. If a player is signed to a long-term contract, his salary will be raised by $4 for each year of the long-term contract. For example, if a player’s salary is $9 and a team wishes to sign him to a three-year contract, his annual salary is increased by $12 to $21 for the next three years.
14.7. If a player is released before the end of his contract, the team releasing that player will be penalized as follows: The team's salary cap will be decreased by $1 for each year in the total number of years in the contract. For example, if a player is signed to a 4-year contract and is released during his second season, the team waiving the player will have $3 removed from his allotted salary cap in the next season, leaving that team with only $257 instead of the usual $260.
14.8. A player may be signed to only one long-term contract. After the contract has expired, the player must be released and made available for the next major league auction.
14.9. Minor league players are not bound by contract until they are called up to the major leagues prior to September 1. A minor league player may be retained from one season to the next without his salary counting towards the team’s $260 salary cap.
14.10. Trades do not affect the contract status of a player.
XV. GOVERNANCE
15.1. The decision of the Commissioner supersedes the rules herein and is final in any disputes. He also has the power to change a rule with an unforeseen loophole post de facto (After the fact) for the benefit of the league. The overall good of the league as a whole will be greater then the benefit to any sum of its constituents.
15.2. All owners (known as the Committee Of the Whole) designate annually an Executive Committee composed of five team owners in good standing. The current Commissioner (self-appointed for life…until he gets fed up with it) is Snatch Catch.
15.3. Rule changes, pronouncements, and acts of whimsy after the inaugural auction are determined by majority vote of the Committee of the Whole.
15.4. The commissioner will hear all arguments on any disputed trades and will make a decision as to the acceptability of the trade in question.
Also from the main forum:
So what happens if for example, I'm at the $260 limit, and a $5 player goes on the DL for the remainder of the season? If I drop the $5 player, I can't sign a FA because I'll be over the limit?
And how does the DL work? If I put a player on the DL, does his salary still count towards the $260 limit?
The cap works like football, meaning you can go over in season.
However, once keepers are due you have to be under the cap.
DL salaries still count, but since you can go over in season, there is no need to worry about it.

??? really?
I think I'm gonna wait for all the rules to be posted. I have too many questions...
I would like to suggest though, and it's fine if everyone doesn't agree, having bench players are important. at least 2 or 3.
Playing without bench players is more complicated, and makes the league more competitive and thought provoking, IMHO.
If you have a bench slot, you can wait out a cold player or wait out a suspended player by rotating in a replacement.
Additionally you could hold a rookie that was on the major league roster on the bench, and wait for him to start playing well. The bench in a fantasy league is like a crutch.
When you have EVERYONE on your roster starting, there is no leeway. You have to make a decision as to who you want to pick up based on how they are going to play for you right now. You can't pick someone up and stash them on your bench "just in case"- you always have to be making decisions as to whether or not the player you pick up is going to outperform the player that you drop..RIGHT NOW. The bench allows for too much "room for error".
Last year: Orlando Cabrera isn't playing well. You can't just move someone else into the lineup from your bench; you have to make a decision whether or not you want to wait him out (He's proven to be a top fantasy SS in the past) or drop him and sign a replacement. It makes things much more interesting...

Want to know what the coolest thing is?
How many times have you ever been sitting there in your fantasy drafts and said to yourself
"I wonder if I should take so-and-so right now, or wait a round..."
or, to another person, said
"EFF YOU! THAT WAS MY NEXT PICK! DAMN IT!"
Well, with an auction league that will never happen. You control who you get. If you really want a player, you will get him. Period.

Period. In one of my other leagues, which is a money league, that happened to me 5 rounds in a row. Mother effer took so many of my picks, but it worked out because my secondary pick turned out to be Beltre in the 10th round, and another turned out to be Clemens in the 12th :)

I'm a little bit wary of the $10 for FAs..what if they're just a guy to fill a roster hole? Like if I wanted to pick up Enrique Wilson because I needed a 2B/SS. He's still $10? What if I'm near the salary cap? I can't sign anyone and I have to play with an incomplete roster until that player is healthy?
And about the reserve clause..why only 7 days? If a guy is on the 15 day DL, why can't we DL him for those 15 days?
Also, do the $5 for the four minor leaguers count towards the $260 total, leaving us $220 for the main draft?
Also, no OPS or OBP as a stat? I know it's not a traditional FBB Stat, but for something like this I wouldn't mind seeing it... :)

Yes they are $10. I kind of went into it in the other thread with Big_E...

You can go over the salary cap IN SEASON. You could have $335 worth of players on your team if you wanted, but going into next season you'd have to be under $260, with at least $1 per roster spot that you had open. You'd have to cut everyone else- its very similar to the NFL in that regard.
You can try and put together a bunch of high priced talent and make a push for the championship., but in the end everyone else will be scooping up the younger, cheaper talent, and have better foundations going forward.
And about the reserve clause..why only 7 days? If a guy is on the 15 day DL, why can't we DL him for those 15 days?
I think you may have misread the constitution:
Also, do the $5 for the four minor leaguers count towards the $260 total, leaving us $220 for the main draft?
Nope.
13.7. A minor league player may be retained from one season to the next without his salary counting towards the team’s $260 salary cap.
14.9. Minor league players are not bound by contract until they are called up to the major leagues prior to September 1. A minor league player may be retained from one season to the next without his salary counting towards the team’s $260 salary cap.
Also, no OPS or OBP as a stat? I know it's not a traditional FBB Stat, but for something like this I wouldn't mind seeing it... :)
Interesting.
The Con: Everything that you buy/read/listen to about auction leagues is based on a 5x5 traditional Roto setup.
The Pro: We make our own system.
I would not be opposed to it either. Lets see what everyone else has to say...
I like the traditional categories. :D

Thanks. The Constitution is a little overwhelming to get everything. ;) I did misread that, so thanks, and thanks for the info on the cap in season. Let me clarify further:
A team can keep 7 players, 12 players, or anywhere in between the next year at the same price, but then to keep that same player in 2006 we would have to lock them up long term, or is it that they choose to keep them for one year at the same price and then they have to go back into the draft, forfeiting the rights to lock them up long term.
Could I get a bit of a further explanation on that, if I didn't have it right? :)
I mentioned the BA/OBP thing because I think that OBP and to an even greater extent, OPS, are much better indicators than BA, since we don't have doubles, triples, etc as categories (obviously). If the player doesn't score or drive anyone in, singles and triples count the same, and there's no bonus for a player with a good eye other than a few more runs.

What do you think?
I like the "option year" aspect as long as you have to throw him back in a year if you pick up the option; you can't sign him long term if you pick up his option.
I also like the idea of doing away with the option year all together, and just saying "sign him or drop him at the end of the season".
I think I like the first way better, though: You can keep a guy for an extra season at his current salary, but then you HAVE to throw him back after that year.
Thoughts?

I agree. Sign a player for $15.
After one year you have to decide whether or not you want to pick up his option, sign him to a long term deal, or waive him.
Option: You get the player for $15 next year, but lose any chance to sign him to a long term deal after that and must throw him back into the FA pool.
Contract: Sign him to a contract with the max length of 4 years.
Waive: See Ya. Back into the FA pool.

It's a bid on players, hence the "auction" part. :)
I'm unsure of exactly how the draft goes in some aspects, though. Who calls out the players? Random owners? Does it go around so that each owner takes a turn calling out a player? What's the deal with that?

right thats what I thought
but... those other questions that you asked.... they are the ones that I need answers to
Maybe we could do it, that whoever wins the player calls out the next name? So if I win Pujols, I can put A-Rod up for bid, for example. That would keep some order in the process...

The way that we'll do it is a randomly order that is pre-selected prior to the auction. We can even make it the order that everyone is on the signup list. The order doesn't really matter, as its an auction and anyone has access to any player. It won't be snake-style, either, it will just be on a continuous loop.
One thing, though: You cannot pass on your turn to throw someone out.

I would imagine there's some strategy involved with the order, though. For instance, if you were the first one to throw out a player, you could throw out a top player that you don't really want in order to put someone into a $30-$35 hole early, etc, so that they can't bid on the player you REALLY want that would come up later.
The second part shouldn't be a problem. It's not like you're picking them, and I'm sure that everyone can think of a player to randomly throw out, even if they don't want him. :D

Ahhhh...now we're getting into the meat and potatos of the auction.
The order has VERY minimal bearing on things, however, you've hit on one of the big auction strategies that people use: Throw out players that you DON'T want so as to get you fellow owners to use up their money, and save the guys that you want for later...
...but then there's a flip side to that: Throw out guys that you DO want early so as to try and get them on the cheap while the rest of the league says "I don't want HIM that bad, I'd rather have player X later. There's so many guys out there, I'll wait until later", only to see player X invloved in a bidding war later and have his price driven up.
As far as inital bids on players goes, its at the person who throws out the player's name's discretion.
However, there is sort of an unwritten rule to not waste time and be a jackass by calling out "ARod...$1".
ARod is obviously not going for a buck.
A more appropriate bid would be $25 or $30. He's obviously not going for either of those figures, but its a much more efficient starting point than $1.

Yeah-I'd say a more reasonable figure for him would be about 256 million. Oh, you're talking about the Auction League. :D
Then again, even if someone called out A-rod for a buck, the next guy could just do what you said and bounce it up for "A-rod for 25," or something-you don't have to bid at simply $1 intervals, from what I read, just "At least $1." I assume there are no half dollar intervals, correct? You couldn't raise a $7 bid to $10.50 or something? Or $14.21.

Exactly: no cents. Just round dollar figures.
The next guy could bid up to $25, but its still a waste. Certain guys do deserve a $1 starting price- in fact a large majority do. But the guys that are going to end up over $20 or so FOR SURE, certainly do not.

As commish, I'll be the mod. I think Soriambi and Big_E will be helping me in keeping track of all the rosters and values spent.
We will take turns throwing out players in a circular order, which doesn't really matter. We can just go from bottom to top, or top to bottom on the signup list.
Oh, and you CANNOT skip your turn to throw someone out.
The order for the auction would go like this (In a hypothetical 4 team league):
Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4, Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4, Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4, Team 1...

Okay, I was wondering that. I have done it where it goes (using your analogy) T1, T2, T3, T4....T4, T3, T2, T1. Not sure if I have a preference, but both do have advantages. Although, in an auction, it is a totally different beast.
Would it be possible to have running list of players that have been taken over here in the forum?
Meaning, (I know it is our responsiblity) but I draft Tino and it is posted in the forum that Tino is off the board. Just as a cross-reference. Any other suggestions bettering this idea are greatly appreciated.

The reason the snake style is used in drafts is because it seeks to make it more fair to the person who has the last pick in the draft.
That isn't needed in an auction, as you're not picking anyone, but merely nominating a player for bidding.

I think the running list would be a great idea, but there's a slight hitch...
It would take a lot of time and effort to do so, and an auction moves at a pretty brisk pace. Its not like a draft where you can make your pick and then kind of "tune out" until you're up again. In an auction you are constantly in the mix for the length of the proceedings.
Because of this, no one will really have the time to compile a list on the side AND update it on the site. I would recommend getting some cheat sheets out of fantasy mags and just cross names off as they come up. Also, I would recommend that everyone trys to keep track of what each player is going for, regardless of whether or not you win him. That way, if Big_E, Soriambi or myself misses something, we can always have backup later.

I wonder if it is possible for MHHL in the chat forum to setup a side panel, where anyone who is purchased can placed.
Believe me, I intend on the scratch and cross method, but having run a live football draft for 5 years, I know that keeping up isn't the easiest thing to do, and that is with everyone in the same room at the same time.
For example, there are 16 teams? with roughly 25 players per roster that is 400 players. It will almost impossible for everyone to keep track using the scratch and cross method.
I understand with the amount of teams, it will be difficult for a repeat, but when I am trying to buy for example David DeJesus in the 19th round and he was bought already in 15th, and I somehow missed it. There could be confusion.
I was just trying to figure out a way to keep a live running tally that everyone can view. Any other suggestions?

Oh, and as of right now there are 13 teams that paid by the Sunday deadline. We can now plan our dollar values for players accordingly. :)
I would love it if there were an easier way to keep track of everything. I'm going to have an excel spreadsheet open that will keep track of salaries as well as the amount that each team has left. I will post the amounts each team has every 10 rounds or so.

Well, I had suggested that since the "second league" was originally going to be a $10 league with all the proceeds going to Jim, that when it became a $25 league that we send $10 pp to Jim, plus the $130 cost of the league, (which with 13 players was another $10 pp) then keep the rest for prizes.
$65 for prizes is not much, but at least a goal. $45 for the winner, $20 for second or something...or $45 for the winner and a $20 trophy.
But I got voted down. :-ponder-:

Ok, I think we need to revise the trade rules a bit. I'm not sure I like the way they are set up.
Let me know what you think...
IX. TRADES
My issue is with the bolded items. Lets debate their merit.

I'd dump them both. I could understand having them in a non-keeper league, but if a team in 1st place wants to make a trade with the team in 4th place after the ASG, I think it should be allowed. And what happens if you spend 3 or 4 days negotiating a deal, and in the interm, the spread goes from two spots to three spots?

I don't know that I like that either..I understand the merit of the suggestion, but part of baseball is teams who are rebuilding trading with the team that offers them the best prospects/cheap players for their stars. I actually have 2 questions:
When do we let Commish (?) know who our keepers are, after the season? Spring training-2 weeks before start of season?
If a player was bid on for $1 and is signed to a long term contract (4 years) the salary is $5 for 4 years or is it $9 for 4 years or what?
If a player was bid on for $1 and is signed to a long term contract (4 years) the salary is $5 for 4 years or is it $9 for 4 years or what?
14.6. If a player is signed to a long-term contract, his salary will be raised by $4 for each year of the long-term contract. For example, if a player’s salary is $9 and a team wishes to sign him to a three-year contract, his annual salary is increased by $12 to $21 for the next three years.
So a $1 player signed to a 4-year deal would be paid $17 a year for 4 years. (4 year/$68 contract)

That's kind of a big jump isn't it? Wouldn't it be better and more condusive to keeping players if the actual $ amount of the salary increased by 4 (or actually even more) every year of the contract? So to keep a player signed as a FA @ $10, that player is signed for 3 years, the first year at a $4 raise to $14, the second year at $18 (or even up to $19), then the third year at $22 (or even $24). This less punitive and allows teams to not be punished for drafting prospects and signing them to a long term deal.
Basically it makes high upside rookies and previously injured players more worth the risk, because the value for that player is greater than the current price being paid which can also increase trade value when the contracts are coming up. Imo this system is leans towards forcing managers to research and develop a team.
Call it more of a backloaded contract keeper league, but it can also help if a team signs a rookie for 2 years, it's not as bad if that rookie doesn't improve.
I would also like to propose an option year at the end of contracts but a punitive option, like add half of the players current salary at the end of the contract.
Yes, it's a big jump, but it also ensures that players are not tied up long term, either. In the other league, you can only keep a player 3 times. So here, a $1 player would become a $13 player, for example.

Bump!
14.3. After two seasons (a season is defined as any part of a major league season) of a player being owned by any rotisserie team without having been released to the free agent pool, the player must be signed to a long-term contract, given his option contract, or released.
I was just reading this over, does that mean that we get each player for 2 years before signing them to a contract or invoking the option year? If so that would be swell. Or is it when a team drafts a player 2 years in a row, they can't just keep throwing back into the auction and hoping to get a better price, but have to sign the player to a contract?

Just wondering as I saw guys like Giles ($14) and Pierre ($25) being dropped and I assume that's the same deal for next year, correct?
No, that only goes for multi-year contracts. If I were to drop Willis or Cordero, I'd be penalized. But not someone who was renewed.

Which is fine by me. But the Constitution doesn't differentiate...just says "contract" - and the option is referred to as a "contract".

We should change 14.7 to say "If a player is released before the end of his long term contract..."

Yes, it should say "long term". Technically, anyone you get in the auction is under a one-year contract...so if there's no penalty for releasing someone taken in this year's auction, there would be none for someone who is renewed.

When a minor league player is called up for an injury - we don't have to call them up unless the injured player comes back and the minor leaguer stays in the big leagues.
So what about Jered Weaver? He was up for injury replacement last time - but this time he's replacing a DFA'd player. Is he subject to the 7 day rule?

Actually, he's replacing a player who was traded, since Jeff Weaver was traded before he had to report to the minors. But that's a technicality. Either way, yes, he is subject to the 7-day rule.
We've been extremely lax this season, so I don't want to all of a sudden be a hardass about 7 days...but if it stretches out to 14 days or more, then yeah, I think we need to start cracking down. The two people I released were extreme examples -- one on the active roster all season, one who has been off the DL for two months.
I'd rather people do the right thing (even a little late) than have to start forcing moves.
Jered Weaver has been activated. :)

yeah I got a question.
How can a f*cking team that includes Ortiz, Giambi, Wright, Abreu, Edmonds, and Floyd be at the bottom in home runs.

Did I lose a bunch of points for having an illegal roster?
I picked up Manny Parra in hopes to add him to my minor league roster. When I grabbed him, he was already in the ML, so I dropped him immediately.
I just noticed he was still listed on my team today and I've lost 14 pts in 3 days...what gives??
There's no record of you dropping him until today, so yes, you had an illegal roster for a few days.
The one downside to Sportsline is that if you have no room for a player on your roster, it will put him in the reserve roster, even though we have no reserves. Presto, illegal roster!
I didn't notice anyone having an illegal roster (honestly, I don't check for that every day) and illegal rosters do score zero points until they are fixed.
if there's any way you can show me you tried to drop him immediately, I can make the necessary adjustments. Otherwise I have to go by what I see at Sportsline.

To be honest - I read your post in the 'Hype Your Minor Leaguers' thread in the other league about Parra. So I picked him up (dropped Adam Jones, who I JUST picked up the day before). I immediately went to my roster and tried to put him in the minors, but the option wasn't available in the drop down menu.
I was going to ask for eligibility, but then read he had been called up. So I went to the add/drop page and dropped him for nobody in return. I intended to pick up Jones again, but he's on waivers now of course.
I don't know how I can prove this except that I've been very active this year, and it wasn't until I noticed how quickly I was falling in the standings that I thought something was wrong.
I had some bad pitching these past couple days, but -14 is a bit excessive!
If nobody objects, I can undo the move...

If nobody objects, I can undo the move...
Thanks. Hopefully everyone understands.
I have a question:
Rickie Weeks was demoted to the minors. What are my options with him? Can I move him to the minors on my team or do I have to either "play" him or cut him?

You can reserve him or cut him. If you cut him, he's a FA and anyone can sign him for $10.
If you reserve him, you still cut him, but nobody else can sign him. When you reserve a player you either:
Add $5 to his base salary and his contract stays the same
OR
you immediately sign him to a 2-year contract extention, meaning he's yours for 2008 and 2009, but his salary is $11 ($3 current deal, plus $8) for each of the next two seasons.

Well...nobody's actually reserved a player more than once in a season.
I'll have to think about that one.
I was going through the old constitution that was pasted near the beginning of this thread. A lot of things, after discussions here, were changed, such as the section on trades and minor leaguers.
So I've been going through it, and will repost it here soon. I will detail anythings I changed so it's obvious, but it's basically the rules we've been operating under, with some things clarified. For example:
OLD1.1. There will be ____ teams in the NYYFans Baseball League consisting of a mix of American and National league players. Each team will consist of 27 players (23 starters and 4 minor leaguers). <!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->NEW<o></o>1.1. There will be a maximum of 12 teams in the NYYFans.com Fantasy Baseball Auction League, consisting of a mix of American and National league players. Each team will consist of a maximum 27 players (23 starters and 4 minor leaguers). THERE IS NO BENCH. A team may also have up to 6 players on their Injured List, provided that they are on the real-life MLB disabled list.
The blue sections have been added. The NO BENCH and 6 players on the DL are what we've been using from the beginning. Now it's just here, spelled out.
<!--[endif]-->
As you will see, the biggest changes from the original document that Snatch Catch had found are in the minor leagues. I also added a section on Expansion Teams.
I believe, to the best of my ability, that this document reflects how this league has been run for the last two years.
If I messed anything up, let me know. Changes/additions are in blue.
I will detail what was changed in a later post.
***************************************************************************************************
The Updated Constitution:
I. TEAMS AND ROSTERS
1.2. A team's roster consists of the following players:
· 5 outfielders
· 2 catchers
· 1 second baseman
· 1 shortstop
· 1 second baseman or shortstop (middle infielder, aka MI position)
· 1 first baseman
· 1 third baseman
· 1 first or third baseman (corner infielder, aka CI position)
· 1 utility player (non-pitcher who can be any offensive player)
· 9 pitchers (any combination of starters and relievers)
· 4 minor league players (any position)
1.3. There is a minimum innings requirement for all staffs of 900 innings. Anyone who does not achieve 900 innings, will be placed last in the categories of ERA and WHIP.
II. AUCTION
2.1. Each team must acquire 23 players at a total cost not to exceed $260 (not real money). A team need not spend the maximum. Money left over after the auction is forfeited. Once the season begins, teams may sign free agents, and their roster value may exceed the $260 starting limit without penalty.
2.2. Teams will nominate players for acquisition in random order.
2.3. The following players are eligible for the major league auction:
· Any players who are on a major league 40-man roster and are still with the major league club at the time of the auction
· Any players who are not on a major league 40-man roster but are projected to start the season on the major league squad.
This replacement will count as a free agent in all aspects, including the $10 salary.
III. POSITION ELIGIBILITY
3.1. A player may be assigned to any position at which he appeared in 20 or more games in the preceding season. If a player did not appear in 20 games at a single position, he may be drafted only at the position(s) at which he appeared most frequently.
3.2. Once the season is underway, a player becomes eligible for any position at which he appears at least 5 times.
3.3. The position eligibility of minor leaguers who have no major league experience will be determined by their projected fielding position for the upcoming season.
3.4. Once the season is underway, a minor league call-up has no prior major league experience will qualify at (a) the position he played in the minors if he is signed before he actually plays a game or (b) the first position he plays in the field in the major leagues if he is signed before he plays 5 games. After 5 games at one position, the usual position eligibility rules take effect.
IV. FEES
4.1. The entrance fee is $25, which must be paid prior to declaring keepers. Unless arrangements have been made, commissioner has right to freeze rosters until fees are up to date.
4.2. All transactions made throughout the season are free.
V. PLAYER SALARIES
5.1. The salary of a player does not change unless the player is released or is signed to a long-term contract.
VI. PRIZE MONEY
6.1. There is no prize money for this league. All monies exceeding the costs for the league host (currently Sportsline.com) and the auction host (currently FantasyAuctioneer.com) are donated to NYYFans.com to help support that site.
6.2 If a trophy is donated by Sportsline.com, it shall be awarded to the league champion at the end of the season.
VII. STANDINGS
7.1. The following criteria are used to determine team performance:
· Composite Batting Average
· Total Runs Scored
· Total Home Runs
· Total Runs Batted In
· Total Stolen Bases
· Total Wins
· Total Saves
· Composite Earned Run Average
· Composite pitching ratio of walks and hits to innings pitched (RATIO = (BB + H)/IP)
· Composite strikeouts
ILLEGAL ROSTERS WILL NOT ACCUMULATE STATISTICS.
7.2. Teams are ranked from first to last in each of the ten categories, and given points for each place. For example, in a twelve-team league, the first-place team in a category receives twelve points, the second-place team eleven, and so on down to one point for last place.
8.2. The effective date of any transaction for purposes of statistical calculation is the day of the transaction if the transaction occurred before rosters lock (as determined by Sportsline). If the transaction occurred after rosters lock (as determined by Sportsline), it is effective the next day.
9.2. From the first day of the major league season until midnight of August 31, league teams are free to make trades of any kind without limit, so long as the active rosters of both teams involved in a trade reflect the required position distribution upon completion of the transaction. This would include subsequent pickups, drops, etc.
9.3. No trades may take place during the off-season.
9.4. There are no limits to the number of trades a team may make during the season.
9.5. Minor league draft picks and auction money may not be traded at any time.
X. WAIVERS
10.1. Any player may be released at any time by his rotisserie team.
10.2. When a player is released, he is placed on waivers for 3 days. Within those 3 days, the lowest placed team to claim the player acquires the player. The previous-year's standings shall be used to determine the original waiver order. After a team claims a player off of waivers, they are dropped to the bottom of the waiver order. Expansion teams are seeded last.
10.3. When a player is claimed off waivers, his salary either becomes $10 or remains the same, whichever is higher.
10.4. After the 3-day waiver period has passed, if the player has not been claimed, he immediately becomes a free agent and is available to all teams.
11.2. No free agents may be acquired between the last day of the previous season and Opening Day of the current season. (AKA "Free For All Day"). Opening day will be considered the first day that major league games take place that count in the regular season standings. Games played in countries other than the USA or Canada that count in the regular season standings are official, and will constitute the beginning of the "Free For All" period.
11.3. Free agents may be picked up from Opening Day of the season until midnight on the second to last day of the season.
11.4. After a player is released to the free agent pool, he is eligible to be claimed by all teams on a first-come, first-served basis.
11.5 No player in the real-life minor leagues may be signed as a Free Agent until the Minor League draft (see below) concludes.
XII. THE RESERVE LIST
12.1. A team may replace any player on its 23-man roster who has been placed on the Disabled List, sent down to the Minor Leagues, been designated for assignment, or been released by his major league team. Only players on the real-life MLB disabled list may be placed on a team's Injured List. Players who are ineligible for the minor leagues in this league or have been released by their major league team may be placed on the Reserve List.
12.2. A reserved player is removed from a team's active roster on the day the transaction was requested, if it occurred before rosters lock (as determined by Sportsline.com). If the transaction was requested after rosters lock (as determined by Sportsline.com), the player is removed from the team's active roster on the next day. The player is then placed on the team's Reserve List.
12.3. There is no limit to the number of players a team may have on its Reserve List.
12.4. Reserving a player protects a team's rights to that player. In order to reserve a player, the team owner must either:
(A) Add $5 to their base salary and their contract stays the same
OR
(B) Immediately sign them to a 2-year contract extension. (A $1 player would then be signed for 2009 and 2010 at $9 per year, for example).
12.5. Once a specific action has been taken to remove a player from its 23-man roster (via release or placing him on the Reserve List), a team is then free to activate a player from reserve, its minor league roster or select any eligible player from waivers or the free agent pool.
12.6. Once a player on the Reserve list has been added to his team's real-life Major League roster, that player must be added to the owner's active roster within 7 days. If the player is not activated within this time period, he will be automatically placed on waivers. Players on the real-life DL who were added to the Injured list in our league must be added to an owner's Active Roster within 7 days of being activated by their MLB team, or will be placed on waivers.
12.6.1 If an unsigned player in real-life is on a team's reserve list in this league, and signed by a MLB team but sent to the minors to 'get in shape', he does not have to be added to the active roster until 7 days after the player is brought up to the major leagues. (Roger Clemens Rule).
12.7. There are no limits to the number of Reserve/Activate moves a team can make in one season.
12.8. A suspended player may not be placed on the reserve list. If a player is suspended by Major League Baseball for seven or more days, he may be waived, but not reserved.
XIII. MINOR LEAGUES
13.1. After each MLB team has played at least one regular-season game, a four-round minor league draft will take place to pick the four minor league players for each team. Teams will draft in reverse order of the previous year's finish for the first round, continuing in a serpentine manner for each subsequent round. Expansion teams (see below) will get the first picks in the first round, in the order in which they were added to the league.
13.1.1 The minor league draft will be conducted in the Auction League forum at NYYFans.com. Since this can take a long time, the commissioner reserves the right to fix a time limit to make a pick. If a team exceeds the time limit, they will be skipped, and will be able to complete their minor league roster after the draft concludes.
13.2. Only players who qualify as a rookie in the major leagues (fewer than 130 AB or 50 IP) are eligible for the minor league draft. Players who exceeded the 50 IP limit but were sent to the minors to learn a fielding position, have still exceeded the IP limit and are not considered rookies, and are not eligible to be demoted to our minor leagues (Rick Ankiel Rule).
13.2.1 Only players who are currently signed by a major league team and assigned to a minor-league affiliate are eligible to be taken by a league team. High School players, College players, Independent League players (such as the Atlantic League or Northern League) and other unsigned players are not eligible (Jered Weaver rule).
13.2.2 Players drafted in the current year's June "entry draft" are not eligible to be signed by league teams as Free Agents until the next season's auction, unless they are called up to the majors in the year in which they are drafted.
13.3. When a player is drafted in the minor league draft, he is placed on the team's minor league roster.
13.4. Players "called up" by their real-life MLB teams do not have to be promoted to the active roster in our league. However, if a player is promoted to an active roster in our league:
· The player may not be demoted back to the minors until demoted by his MLB team
· The player may not be demoted back to the minors if he has reached the 130 AB or 50 IP limits
· Players demoted to the minors by the MLB team who are not eligible for our minor leagues can be either kept on the active roster (but will not earn any points), reserved (see XII, above) or released to the waiver wire.
13.5 A player taken in the minor league draft has a salary of $5.
13.6 A free-agent minor league player added to the minor league roster will also have a salary of $5.
13.7. A minor league player may be retained from one season to the next without his salary counting towards the team's $260 salary cap.
13.8. Each team has a maximum of four minor league players he may retain from one season to the next. In the minor league draft, a team may only draft enough players to reach the four-man minor league roster limit.
13.9. Players may only be kept in the minors from one season to the next if they have not exceeded the 130 AB/50 IP limit. Players who have exceeded that limit must be kept with a major league keeper or released.
XIV. ROSTER PROTECTION AND CONTRACTS
14.1. From season to season, each team must retain between 7 and 12 players, excluding minor league players. There is a limit of 4 minor league players a team may keep from one season to the next.
14.2. The names of the players being retained must be declared by a date decided by the league commissioner, but at least two weeks before the auction.
14.3. After the season, a player must be signed to a long-term contract, given his option contract, or released.
For example, if a player's salary is $9 and a team wishes to sign him to a three-year contract, his annual salary is increased by $12 to $21 for each of the next three years.
14.7. If a player is released before the end of a multi-year contract, the team releasing that player will be penalized as follows: The team's salary cap will be decreased by $1 for each year in the total number of years in the contract.
14.9. Minor league players are not bound by contract until they are called up to the active roster. A minor league player may be retained from one season to the next without his salary counting towards the team's $260 salary cap.
14.10. Trades do not affect the contract status of a player.
XV: EXPANSION TEAMS
15.1 If fewer than 12 teams remain from the previous season, the league may seek out new owners to bring the league up to 12 teams.
15.2 If an equal number of owners leave the league as are interested in joining the league, the new owners will take over the existing franchises.
15.2.1 Teams will take over existing franchises in the following manner - the first owner expressing interest in the league will take over the abandoned team that finished highest in the standings. The second owner will take over an abandoned team that finished second highest in the standings, and so forth.
15.3 If there are more new owners joining the league than there are old owners leaving, then no new owners will take over abandoned teams, and an expansion draft will be held.
15.4 If no teams are being abandoned, but new teams are brought in to bring the total number of teams up to (or closer to) 12, then an expansion draft will be held.
15.5 In the expansion draft, new teams may select 7 players from the non-kept players from the returning teams, or from the rosters of the abandoned teams. They may not select players who were Free Agents at the end of the previous season or were on options contracts, and may not select players who were on minor league rosters. The order of the expansion draft will be the order that new owners asked to be included in the league, and proceed in a serpentine manner until the draft ends.
15.6 Expansion teams will not get any minor league keepers. They will fill their minor league roster during the minor league draft.
XVI. GOVERNANCE
16.1. The decision of the Commissioner supersedes the rules herein and is final in any disputes. He also has the power to change a rule with an unforeseen loophole post de facto (After the fact) for the benefit of the league. The overall good of the league as a whole will be greater then the benefit to any sum of its constituents.
16.2. The current Commissioner (until he gets fed up with it) is Big_E.
16.3. Rule changes, pronouncements, and acts of whimsy after the inaugural auction are determined by majority vote of the league owners.
16.4. The commissioner will hear all arguments on any disputed trades and will make a decision as to the acceptability of the trade in question.
Changes:
1.1 THERE IS NO BENCH. A team may also have up to 6 players on their Injured List, provided that they are on the real-life MLB disabled list.
This is how we've been playing all along. It was never in the constitution though, so this is a clarification.
*************************************************************************************************************************
2.1. Money left over after the auction is forfeited. Once the season begins, teams may sign free agents, and their roster value may exceed the $260 starting limit without penalty.
Again...just a clarification. If you finish the auction with $10 left, that money is not used for anything else. And because of the DL, and FA pickups, all teams have rosters exceeding $260 during the season.
Sections 2.10 and 2.11 were deleted as being redundant. They were about minor league stuff; that is covered in the minor league section
*************************************************************************************************************************
3.2. Once the season is underway, a player becomes eligible for any position at which he appears at least 5 times.
The old document said 15 times. Maybe it was a typo; we've always played with 5 games at a new position gives you new position eligibility.
Rule 3.5 was deleted, which said that players who switch positions permanently in the off-season will not be eligible at their old position. (Such as Alfonso Soriano moving from 2B to OF). This rule was never enforced and is really a lot of work to enforce.
*************************************************************************************************************************
VI. PRIZE MONEY
The old document joked about the prizes for 3rd, 2nd and 1st place being "None, More none and Most none". This takes out the joke and replaces it with what happens with the money.
*************************************************************************************************************************
7.1 ILLEGAL ROSTERS WILL NOT ACCUMULATE STATISTICS.
Always been the way we played, but never spelled out in the constitution.
*************************************************************************************************************************
9.3. No trades may take place during the off-season.
Again....after the trade deadline of August 31, until the completion of the next season's auction, we've never allowed trades.
Deleted the old 9.3, 9.5 and 9.6;
9.3 was never a rule in our league -- it dealt with trading only with teams within 2 positions of you in the standings....we killed that immediately, but never documented it here.
*************************************************************************************************************************
Any place the old rules said "7 days" it has been changed to "3 days". 3 days is the maximum waiver period at Sportsline. Also, the part that had waivers rotating based on current standings was changed so that there was a starting waivers based on the previous season's standings, with expansion teams last. It's how I've done it each of the last two seasons.
*************************************************************************************************************************
This defines "Free For All Day". We've always had FFA Day, but never defined it.
11.5 No player in the real-life minor leagues may be signed as a Free Agent until the Minor League draft (see below) concludes.
Again, always been how we've run the league. The old rule 11.5 limited people to 40 FA + Waiver acquisitions a year. We've never played that way.
*************************************************************************************************************************
Section XII: The Reserve List
This section was almost completely re-written from 12.1 through 12.6
There was previously confusion as to who could and could not be reserved, and it mentioned injured players, but we use a 6-player DL. It also didn't detail the penalties for reserving a player.
This section now clearly defines what the Reserve List is for.
*************************************************************************************************************************
Section XIII - The Minor Leagues
Also almost completely re-written. The old form mandated that players be called up if their MLB team did so, but had different rules before and after 9/1. It also didn't allow you to demote players to the minors or sign minor-league FA's.
The new section reflects the reality as to how we have been running the league for at least the last two seasons.
*************************************************************************************************************************
14.2. The names of the players being retained must be declared by a date decided by the league commissioner, but at least two weeks before the auction.
14.3. After the season, a player must be signed to a long-term contract, given his option contract, or released.
The old 14.2 was written for leagues that have an in-person auction.
14.3 has been clarified as to the different types of contracts.
*************************************************************************************************************************
SECTION XV: Expansion Teams
Completely new section. The old document did not deal with expansion teams at all. Again, this reflects, to the best of my ability how things have been run here.
*************************************************************************************************************************

I was thinking - maybe this year's prize for 1st can be free entry next year?
In other words, split the entry fee amongst all the losing teams, while the winner pays nada.

I like this.
Also, I was hoping that maybe we could talk about this:
13.2.2 Players drafted in the current year's June "entry draft" are not eligible to be signed by league teams as Free Agents until the next season's auction, unless they are called up to the majors in the year in which they are drafted.
I think it would be fair to pick up these players once they've signed a contract with a MLB team and you have an open mL slot. They meet every other requirement to pick up a minor leaguer at that point.
If they're on limits to be on a roster if they're Major Leauguers, they shouldn't be off limits as minor leaguers, in my opinion.

I can go with that. 13.2.2 is how it's run in the other league, because we don't want people snagging the top 5 players in the June draft as soon as they're announced.
But if people here agree, we can change it to be:
13.2.2 Players drafted in the current year's June "entry draft" are not eligible to be signed by league teams as Free Agents until they sign a contract with a MLB franchise. Verifyable proof must be provided to the league comissioner of the player's signing.
If I understood the rules correctly, since I am first new player to join, I get first pick in the minor league draft?
Yes, in the first round.
Since it's serpentine, you would get the last pick in the 2nd round, first pick in the 3rd round (essentially back-to-back picks there) and the last pick in the last round.

Usuall in the $45 range for the most expensive guys.
As I said earlier, the auction results were kind of skewed last year because of having only 9 teams.
Yeah you're right, he'll definitely be on the 40 man let alone the 25
My bad
He's not on the 40-man yet; he's a non-roster invitee.
The 40-man roster thing has never really been enforced either. Just keep in mind that if you take someone in the auction, and they are in the minor leagues, while you can demote them to the minors, to keep them in the future, you'd have to use a major league keeper on them. That means, an option contract or a long term deal. You could get Bruce, for say $6 in the auction if he's that good...he starts the season in the minors...to keep him in 2009 your options would be to renew him for $6 and lose him in 2010, or sign him to a long term deal which would be worth -- even if you got him for $1 in the auction...:
Option deal: $1 in 2009
2 year deal: $9 in 2009, $9 in 2010
3 year deal: $13 in 2009, $13 is 2010, $13 in 2011
4 year deal: $17 in 2009, $17 in 2010, $17 in 2011, $17 in 2012.
if he was signed at the $6 in the original example:
Option deal: $6 in 2009
2 year deal: $14 in 2009, $14 in 2010
3 year deal: $18 in 2009, $18 is 2010, $18 in 2011
4 year deal: $22 in 2009, $22 in 2010, $22 in 2011, $22 in 2012.

Thanks again for the info Big E.
One thing I am not clear on (I'm not stupid I swear) - I have done 3-4 mlb auctions before, but I never had a league where the FA's and waiver players cost $. Aside from the $260 salary cap for the auction, do we have a set dollar amount to work with on FA/waiver pickups? Where does the money for fa/waiver pickups come from?
The Players below were on teams' active roster or DL. It does not include players currently in the minor leagues. Contract is length of current deal. Players with an Asterisk (*) are either in the last year of a multi-year deal, or were on an option contract. In either case, they are ineligible for keepers.
Players with "MINORS" as a contract were minors keepers in 2007, and are now in the ML roster. They can be renewed at their $5 salary for one year, or returned to the auction.
So for example, Pujols was taken at $37. He can be signed to a long-term deal, renewed or dropped to the auction. Long term deals would be:
2 yrs/$90 contract ($45/yr)
3 yrs/$147 contract ($49/yr)
4 yrs/$212 contract ($53/yr)

Thanks again for the info Big E.
One thing I am not clear on (I'm not stupid I swear) - I have done 3-4 mlb auctions before, but I never had a league where the FA's and waiver players cost $. Aside from the $260 salary cap for the auction, do we have a set dollar amount to work with on FA/waiver pickups? Where does the money for fa/waiver pickups come from?
It's not that they cost money...it's what their salary is set at.
So above, I am pretty sure Fausto Carmona was a FA pickup. So his salary is set at $10. If he is being kept, he can be renewed at $10, or kept at $18, $22, $26 (for a 2, 3, or 4 year deal).
There's no limit to how many FA's you can pick up. So if you have a $1 player from the auction, and drop him to pick up another player, your payroll went from $260 to $269. Your payroll can go as high as you want, but the more $1 players you drop in favor of $10 FA's, the less potential keepers you probably have, unless its a Papelbon-type player who comes out of nowhere to light up the league.
I know some other leagues use a FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget). One league I'm in has a $100 FAAB per person. We don't do that.
What is the status of someone like Garza. Who is listed as "minors" for me, but is on the ML roster and will probably start in Tampa?
It means he was a Minors keeper last year.
You can renew him for one year at $5 and lose him in 2009
or
You can sign him to a long term contract for 2, 3 or 4 years.

Yes, if they are only DH eligible, then they can ony be used at the DH spot.

I guess it means you can pick until 10 PM. If you don't pick by then, you lose your pick.
I hope you won't do like the pro teams and wait until the very last second to make an obvious pick that you've chosen ages ago :P

Yes. You are on the clock at 10am; lose your pick at 10pm, but the hope is nobody takes 12 hours to make their picks.

Yes, but then the team Howard was on:
1) Never paid for the league
2) Never announced keepers by a long-established deadline
so they were disbanded and all their players made available for the expansion draft.
You lucked out, big time. :D

I see most teams have 2 or 3 closers on their rosters, and no relief pitchers (besides the closers, and Joba of course :P). Is there a rule concerning this, or can we pick how many starters / closers / relievers we want, as long as we have 9 pitchers?

You can pick as many relievers or starters as you want in this league.
Middle-relievers/set up guys don't do much because we don't score 'holds'; but they help in ERA, WHIP and K's...and if a closer goes down, could of course be a cheap source of saves.

Don't we have an innings floor, though?
yes, 900 IP. But even if you have only 3 SP, you should be able to hit 900 IP.
(3 SP * 180 IP = 540; 6 RP * 60 IP = 360, 540 + 360 = 900)
But I can't see anyone punting wins and strikeouts like that; or having 6 RP who are more than set up guys...

What is the Minor League draft order?
After each MLB team has played at least one regular-season game, a four-round minor league draft will take place to pick the four minor league players for each team. Teams will draft in reverse order of the previous year's finish for the first round, continuing in a serpentine manner for each subsequent round. Expansion teams (see below) will get the first picks in the first round, in the order in which they were added to the league.
I have to see if anyone kept all 4 minor leaguers, but tentatively it is:

Can we add and drop minor leaguers throughout the season?
yes, as long as they have rookie eligibility (50 IP, 130 AB).
also...kids who get taken in the 2008 June Entry Draft cannot be taken until the 2009 season, unless they are promoted to the majors this year.

Speaking of minor leaguers....it appears Colby Rasmus will be starting the season in the minor leagues - but I drafted him as a major leaguer.
If he does indeed start the season in the minors - can I just bump him down there on FFA day and pick up a ML FA?
I would have to forego my 1st round mL Draft pick to keep a spot open.

I don't think the discussion went anywhere into changing it...
Yes, you can drop someone on Free For All day...when the official thread for the mL draft is opened, let me know you have an extra slot.
Yes, you can demote him as long as he still has the aforementioned rookie eligibility. You would then have 4 mL players, and get no spots in the mL draft.

What is the BJ Upton / Edwin Jackson rule then?
What is the BJ Upton / Edwin Jackson rule then?
From a time with a different commissioner? ;)
We started this league in 2005.
By 2005, BJ Upton had 159 career AB and rightfully so should have been denied being demoted to the minors.
As far as Edwin Jackson, it was the ruling that anyone taken in the Auction could not be demoted to the minors. I have softened that to as long as the person has rookie eligibility, he can be demoted. However, if he is kept, it's a ML keeper at the ML rules, since he was taken in the Auction.
There have been lots of other changes since then (though the No Bench Rule has always been a constant) including adding waivers, allowing teams to sign FA mL players, etc...

Yeah, you could try to sign 4 mL players in the auction at $1 a piece. Then demote them...but to keep them the next year, you either renew them again at $1 a piece or sign them to a $9, $13 or $17 contract.
Is a rookie player worth that?
Take Evan Longoria, the #3 pick in the 2006 June draft. Maybe you get him for $1 in 2007. He spent the whole year in the minors. (Waste of $1). Do you renew him for 2008, for the $1 and lose him in 2009?
Or do you think he's worth $9 this year to keep him in 2009?
The #2 pick that year, Gregory Reynolds is nowhere near ML ready. The #4 pick that year, Brad Lincoln, had surgery and missed all of 2007.
So it could be a loophole, or just bad/risky strategy. :)

It's absolutely worth it on the high-end guys that are close to the majors. Guys like Wade Davis, Rasmus, Buchholz, Ellsbury, Votto, Maybin, Longoria, etc. They're all close to the Majors, and will most likely be up this year. If it doesn't work out, it only costs you a buck, and for that dollar you get first crack at a stud minor leaguer at a lesser rate than even the minor league draft.

But how do you know who is close to the majors 9 months after the June draft?
Prince Fielder was taken in the #7 in the 2002 draft. Was he close to being majors ready?
If you snagged him for $1 in the 2003 auction, you could have had him for all of 2003 for $1. Then what?
If you signed him to a 3-year $13 contract, you would have lost $13 in 2004 when he spent the whole year in the minors, had him for only September of 2005 (basically losing the $13 again) and all of 2006.
So you would have had him for 1 year (plus one month) in the majors, but would have lost $13 in 2004 and $13 in 2005.
Worth it? Doubtful. You could have just as easily taken him for $5 in the 2003 mL draft; kept him for $5 in 2004; $5 in 2006; and signed him long-term to a 4-year $21/year contract following the 2006 season.
And the $5 mL deals would not count against your $260 auction limit, unlike a ML keeper pick.
High risk.
Look at Ellsbury, since you mentioned him. He was taken in the 2005 draft.
You could have taken him, say, for $1 in the 2006 auction and then faced a decision...keep him for $1 in 2007? or go $9 for 2007 and 2008? Doubtful you would have signed him longer than that given no power/good speed in the minors.
He wasn't worth $9 in 2007 as a late-season callup. So you'd have him for 2008 at $9...but I got him for $7 this year, so if he was worth $9, he'd have gone for at least that this year.

There are plenty of elite talent guys close to the majors available for a buck.
It's the reason we put that rule into place to begin with.

But since I got him for $7 this year, and could renew him for $7 next year, a two-year $18 (total) extention for 2008/09 is more than one year at $7 and a renew at $7, for two-years $14 for 2008/09
Like I said, it's a risk, for teams that want to take a risk.

The majority of these guys weren't protected this year. If you buy them for a dollar at the auction, but they don't make the majors, you use a minor league spot for them (Awesome! They're a top minor league pick, yet you have them for $1!)
If they make the majors, you have their talent playing for you.
If they fail, you're only out a dollar.
If they succeed, you've got a star at a bargain.
If they spend the whole year in the minors, you assess what their '09 prognosis looks like. Worse comes to worse, you re-up him for a buck, and he underperforms in '09. You're out a dollar.
Maybe you pick up his option and he becomes a star. You still got that production for a year, for a buck.
There's no downside here. It's a loophole, and that's why we closed it up initially. It's why I pushed for the idea that anyone taken in the ML auction had to remain on your mL roster. It's entirely too easy to populate your mL roster with top mL talent in the auction.

He may be. I was just saying there's high-end mL talent out there to be had for a buck at the auction if you know your stuff. Even if it's one guy, it's still a huge loophole to acquire the player at a highly discounted rate with no real downside.

I don't see a huge loophole here. Why waste the dollar at the auction? Could cost you the next year. So, maybe you get first crack at the player. So what, the majority of these guys don't meet the hype anyway. It's still better strategy to get a guy in the minor draft, have him keep his mL eligibility, keep him for nothing the next year, use his production that year, then extend him. Headley has just been sent to AAA and I wanted to make sure I got everything straight before doing anything with him.
So, I can either drop him, or place him on the Reserve list. If I Reserve him, I have 2 options:
- add 5$ to his 2$ base salary, so I'll have him for 1 Year @ 7$
- sign him to a 2 year extension. I'm not sure how this part works. Sign him for 2009 and 2010 @ 10$, and his 2008 salary stays at 2$?
If I reserve him, and he gets back in the MLB squad, I have 7 days to activate him again.
Correct? :)

Increasing his base by $5 obviously gives you more options.

Hmmm...
- if he turns out to be a bust, and has a lousy year, I lose only 2$ (his 2008 salary) + 1$ penalty, if I sign him to an extension; I lose 7$ if I increase his base.
- if I'm sure he's gonna be a star player, I pay only 22$ for the next 3 years (2 for 2008, 10 for 2009 and 2010) - if I sign him to an extension; I pay 37$ (7 for 2008, 15 for 2009 and 2010) - if I increase his base.
In both cases, it looks like signing him to an extension is the best way to go. Am I missing something here?

If you add $5 to his base, he becomes $7 for 2008. You can renew him for 2009 at the same $7 (and lose him to the 2010 auction). If he's a bust, it only cost you $7 for 2009.

I still think a 2 year extension is the best way to go.
- if he sucks, I'd rather lose 3$ (2$ base + 1$ penalty) than 7$ base
- if he turns out to be great, I'd rather pay 22$ and have him for 3 years instead of paying 14$ for 2 years or 37$ for the same 3 years
The only negative thing out of it would be if I keep him for 2009 and he sucks. But I think 2008 should be enough to figure out if he's worth keeping or not.

But you can't count his $7 base this year...because we're not making you pay an extra $5. He cost you $2, and we make him $7. So if you increase his base and renew him next year, he cost you $9. $2 this year, $7 next.

Right now you 64.50 'pts'. This is a Rotisserie league, which means that you get x number of 'pts' for your standing in each of the ten categories (AVG, R, HR, RBI, SB, W, SV, ERA, WHIP, K) we use. For example, since there are 11 teams in our league, the person in first place on any given day in AVG gets 11 pts, the person in 2nd gets 10 pts, 3rd gets 9 pts and so on. You add up your pts for each category to come to a final total (that's where your 64.5 comes from). Each of these categories is a running total for the entire year. Does that answer your question?

Sure, if he has rookie eligibility. I only answered the question he asked about reserving someone...I didn't research the player's eligibility -- that's up to the owner.
But yeah, if he didn't understand things after all the debate about who can or cannot be demoted, I'll let him demote him at the old salary.

1-5 is how the box score has him. If he hit two doubles, it will get corrected overnight. Don't sweat the live scoring. :)

Yes if he is on the ML and not the mL disabled list, then you have effectively promoted him to the majors by putting him on the DL.
But yes, if he is demoted to the minors then you can put him back in the minors here, provided you have room.

yes. just let me know if you add a FA mL player so I can adjust the salary.
However...if you add a FA with rookie eligibility to your ML roster, then demote him, he is a ML FA with a 1-year, $10 contract...not a $5 Minors contract.

E, is my roster not accumulating points today because I pulled that trade right in the middle of the deadline?
THat's messed up if so...

You must have done it a minute before rosters locked.
I can fix it for you.

Strange - I got stats for 3/4 players in the trade.
I dropped Broxton to make room for Joba, but I still got stats for Broxton - yet I also got stats for Grady, Rollins and Loney - none for Joba (who didn't have any, but he's not even listed on the Live Scoring page for my team).

Rosters locked at 12:35pm yesterday because of the 1:05 games. Any moves made after 12:35 count for today...and you would still accumulate stats for any players dropped after 12:35pm for yesterday.
And don't go by live scoring...it's not accurate. The overnight stats show both Chamberlain and Broxton on your roster.
EDIT: Chamberlain was not on your roster because he was put in as a "reserve" because there was no room on your active roster. This also gave you an illegal roster for yesterday and no points.
In fairness (because the illegal roster was the result of a trade transaction) I will fix things and you will get updated overnight.
This means: you will LOSE any stats Broxton would have accumulated...but since you got zero points for having an illegal roster, you will gain points for everyone elses stats.
Just to clarify my position...
I will fix rosters if they become illegal due to a trade. This is because I can propose a trade to say, Sycamore Style, and he accepts it 1 minute before rosters lock. By the time I check my roster, I am illegal. This is not fair, because I did not have a chance to fix my roster.
However, if a team adds a player to their roster and does not make a corresponding drop, for example, I will not fix that problem because in that case, owners are responsible for their own actions.

Thanks Eric.
I guess we did indeed pull the trigger right at the lock.
Hey Eric, what do the rules say about Longoria now that he got called up?
You do not have to promote him. However...
If you promote him, you cannot demote him unless he is demoted in real life.
If you promote him and he exceeds the 50 IP/130 AB limits, you cannot demote him, even if his real life MLB sends him down again.

What if he doesn't promote him, yet Longoria exceeds the 130 AB?

He can leave him there as long as he wants...if he exceeds the 130 AB he can stay in the minors, but once promoted cannot be sent down again.

Just curious - if that's the case, why was I not able to keep Adam Jones as a minor leaguer this year? I never promoted him (although the M's did last fall).

Because of the off season. If a player (like Adam Jones) exceeds 50 IP or 130 AB during a season, the next season he must be kept with a Major League keeper. You can't keep a non-rookie in the mL from one season to the next.
Jones had 139 career AB after the 2007 season.

Actually, I believe it was the other league I had to do this. Sorry, my bad.

Yeah, the Aybar fella went on the dl.

It looks like my roster was illegal for April 7th and I therefore didn't score any points that day. It looks like when you added LaPorta and Wieters to my roster, you added them as active and that made my roster illegal. Could you make sure what I'm seeing is what happened, and if so, fix it so that my roster is legal and counts that day? Thanks.

Can I sign a rookie that hasn't exceeded the minor league limits (50 IP or 130 AB) to a minor league contract, even if he's active in the MLB roster?
(I know my roster is currently illegal, I'm just waiting to clear things up before deciding what to do next)

No, to put someone in the mL they have to actually be in the mL. :)

Another question: if I make a trade, by noon today, will it be considered for today's games, or do I have to wait until it's completed? (on yahoo, it always takes a couple of days for trades to be validated)
As soon as the trade is completed, it takes effect. it can sometimes be a problem if it causes a roster to be illegal, because it was right before rosters locked, but in that case I am always happy to make rosters legal again... :)
E:
What's the policy for guys coming off the DL? Do I have a certain amount of days before I have to take him off my DL before my roster becomes illegal or is it illegal as soon as that person has his DL status is changed at sportsline. I ask because I have multiple guys who should be coming off the DL in the next few days.

You have 7 days to activate them after their first appearance; then they will be automatically dropped by me.
SO...if say, Jorge Posada is activated off the DL on June 3rd, but because of damp weather he does not play until June 5th, then the clock starts on June 6th. If you don't activate him by the 13th, then on the 14th he is released.

If a player under contract is cut - the penalty is:
- lose $1 per year remaining under contract from $260 auction purse
- lose player's salary from $260 auction purse
?

A player in the middle of a multi-year contract is cut, the team loses $1 from their $260 auction purse next year, for each year left on the contract. So if someone has 2 years left (2009 and 2010) they lose $2 off their budget in 2009.

Was Billy Butler reserved by someone?
If so - doesn't he have to be picked up now that he's been recalled?

Actually; that's a good question. If he were a regular call up; absolutely, within 7 days of re-activation. However, it's due to a DL situation, for mL players if the player is called up for a DL player they do not need to be activated.
Either way is cool, E, nothing specific in the constitution I believe.
Does the auction league really suck this much????
