View Full Version : Vegas is booked!

I just booked my flight out to Vegas for my annual March Madness trip with my closest friends from high school.

I am to freaking excited right now. March Madness in Vegas is the absolute apex of the Vegas experience. I call it the Perfect Storm, as you have the usual Vegas debauchery PLUS:

1) March Madness
2) Spring breakers
3) St Patty's Day

WHHHHHHAAAATTTT?!?!?!?

Craziness.

Anyone else been/going out there for The Perfect Storm?

Dude's going to pull a Ned Flanders and run away from his cocktail waitress-guy, only to have her show up a couple of weeks later looking for money, lovin', and his pink shirt.

Edited to add that I was going to correct "cocktail waitress-guy," since I meant cocktail waitress-wife, but . . . it's staying.

Man... I went in November for my friend's 21st... a lot of her friends, alot of her sister's friends... good times all around... we stayed in the MGM.... they all stayed in the venetian(we got a great deal w/ the MGM).. so it sucked having to go all the way over there.. but it's all good.

Nothing big was happening that weekend, sports wise... so the sports book wasn't too crazy. I could see how it would be during march madness, but other than the sports book, it'd probably be pretty much the same, no?

This will be my 2nd time during March Madness. I was there 2 years ago. Its bizarre watching these games in the sportsbooks. Instead of cheering for teams when the lead changes, people cheer the point spread.

It was a crazy weekend, and I expect much of the same.

Not even close to the same. You forgot the ingredients to the perfect storm:

1) March Madness (the most exciting sports betting period of the year)

2) Spring Break (I can't tell me how many times I heard "I don't usually do this sort of thing, but this is my last spring break before I graduate, so I just want to have fun")

3) St Patty's day (The most drunken holiday in the U.S.)

We'll be there right before you, because we're going for the NASCAR race. I haven't been since '94, which was a great time to be there...late May '94:

1. Yankees in first place;
2. Rangers-Devils playoffs;
3. Knicks-Bulls playoffs.

I spent one extremely happy day in the sports book just loving life and all those TV's!

I have been to Vegas during the madness and found it to be 3-1 guys, more like a sausage fest if you ask me. The other time that I went wasn't during the madness and I noticed a lot more of the opposite sex. Just my two cents.

Granted it wasn't during St. Patty's either.

Not really, no. I'll throw a couple of bucks in a slot machine if I have a few loose singles if we're all sitting around waiting for someone, but I won't ever get money out for the purpose of gambling.

I've never sat down at a table to play anything.

And I won't, either. I have a HIGHLY addictive personality, but I'm fairly analytical about things. Therefore, unless I'm willing to make gambling my living and work diligently to beat the system, I know that I don't have the control I would need over a situation in order for me to wager money...so I don't do it.

T.I. is our favorite and the one that we all meet up at. Decent place to watch games, you can get a seat most of the time, waitresses keep bringing you drinks quickly and no questions asked (I have some hilarious stories about some of them, including a group of us wagering on personal info about our girl and giving her a cut of the pot if she gave up the answer), and best of all, they have one of the best fastfood type eateries (that was just opened up this year when they remodeled their book. And its the only good thing about the renovations) within about 50 feet of the Book: Canter's Deli.

Its an official, full blown, NY style Jewish deli that serves GREAT food. The Matzoh ball soup is awesome, although I guzzled it down way to quick after 47 (yes that is the actual number) drinks over the course of 11 straight hours in the book there, and burned the HELL out of my mouth.

Their egg salad is great, and the corned beef and Pastrami is fantastic, too.

The only downside to your rec is Canter's. I've been to the original in L.A. and let's just say that the only thing I'd trust in that joint is the french fries. (Practically nothing can survive boiling oil.) Lender's makes better bagels than they do. I'm sure the Vegas outlet is cleaner and better than the one out here but I'm still afraid of the place. I'll wait till I get to NY before getting my deli fix.

But as for the sports book, I'll see if I can lure everybody over.....

The waitresses are VERY liberal with drinks there. I had two full ones in front of me and she let me order another (but only after I promised to slam the two before she got back).

The Vegas Carter's is EXTREMELY clean. I mean IMMACULATE.

The thing is, comparitively speaking, any other food you get in a casino, except for the steak houses and high end buffets, is absolute GARBAGE and tastes like it, too. Usually, you ended up having to make a run somewhere to get anything substantive that was edible, and you would end up missing a LOT of time. The Carter's is the best possible option for casino "quick and easy" food that I have encountered yet. Every single thing that we ate from there (and we each went probably 3-4 times a day) was VERY good. Nothing was even remotely bad, and everyone else who was in the book would get food there, too and say how good it was (you're allowed to bring it into the book). I'm not trying to say that the one in Hollywood isn't bad, I just don't want your bad experience there to cheat you out of being able to enjoy good food at reasonable prices without having to miss out on any action in the book. That place was a godsend...

Oh, and the fries were actually a staple for us. Whenever we were hungry but no ready for a big sandwich, one of us, depending on who's turn it was, would make a fry run for a box. You're back in less than 5 minutes, too.

My favorite food place in Vegas is Il Fornaio in New York, New York. Good, solid Italian food... you can opt for pizza, pasta, or meat, depending on your mood. It's reasonably priced but sometimes there can be a long line to get in. That's the only down side.

Worst place: some place in Paris, Las Vegas that claimed to offer French ham on a baguette. I don't know which lame excuse for a restaurant that place was but I've avoided all their restaurants like the plague since that disaster!

I can't guarantee that I'll check out Canter's but I'll try to stop by T.I. For better or for worse, my friend and his family will probably take the lead in deciding where to go (I'll be outnumbered on this trip).

The later rounds will be on during the tournament- I'm thinking they are going to be VERY fun to wager on and watch in the sports book with the tourney humming along at the same time...like during a TV timeout in one of the hoops games:

"Ooooh! Upper right corner- Manny vs. Clemens!"

I'm off to Vegas on Tuesday for the WSA shoe convention. I have a dinner reservation at TAO on Thursday night - I heard this is by far the hottest place in Vegas right now (restaurant and club/lunge).

And best of all, I have been to Vegas 3 times already(all for the shoe shows), but this will be my first time going when I am 21!!!(I got in to all clubs and bars and strip clubs, but never was succesful in my attempt to gamble)

Is it the same as the Tao in NY? Went there once -- very trendy (you know it's trendy when you are sitting with an actress from one tv show and another cast member from the same show randomly walks in with her husband and sits at another table).

Yes, both Tao's are owned by the same group.
Excellent place. I saw Shockey there one night last year - the place attracts all the stars. I believe in an NYPost interview, Giambi said it was his favorite restaurant.

I've been working my tushie off!!! :( I'm in Vegas till Tueday for work, then fly from here to Denver for work. Then home for 2 days then off to Boston for a week or so (work). I'm sitting here in the room working on a huge bid due next week so not too much "fun" going on here.

At the Sahara. They comped me so I'm happy. Maybe the March Madness won't be as bad there.

How long does this March Madness go on? Is it like spring break?

That's cool. We're going there then b/c that's when our wedding is. It was originally going to be in September, but I checked the temps and September was still too hot while October average temps seemed perfect! (It's going to be outside.) :D

We need to get there at some point prior to that to meet with our officiant and talk to the baker about our cake. We were supposed to meet the officiant there this Sunday, but I e-mailed him to let him know we couldn't make it and that I'd have to re-schedule.

You don't know what March Madness is??

It's the term for the NCAA basketball championship...64-team tournament, 16 teams in 4 brackets, single elimination to decide the national champion. It started yesterday (Thursday - always starts on a Thursday in mid-March) and lasts until the first couple days in April. It's held on basketball courts (mostly college campuses, but not always) all across the country. The championship game is usually the 2nd or 3rd of April (usually the first Monday in April), or around then. :)

I totally hate pro basketball but I enjoy watching the college game. It's much more exciting! :) Unfortunately my alma mater was eliminated in the first round today, but it's OK...baseball season is starting soon, and we all know that baseball is the only real sport!! :D

I just figured everybody - even non-fans - knew about March Madness because the TV is completely saturated with it in March.

Very cool! Well, of course I'll still be watching the WS if the Yankees are in it! We probably won't go on a honeymoon until next year, anyway, so I won't miss it (provided the Yanks are in it). :D

I guess I am so turned off by basketball that I tuned it out. I actually used to love basketball as a sport, played it in high school. But here in Laker Land I grew to hate the NBA enough to turn off completely to BB.

Thank you! I'm sure it'll be great. Yeah, the average high temp that day in Vegas is 78 degrees, which should be nice. Hopefully it stays in the 70s, as I think temps even in the 80s are too hot to be outside. Thankfully the ceremony is short and then we move inside! For the date we wanted in September (original date was 9/21 because that was the anniversary of our first date), the average high was 92! That's too hot to be outside, so we moved it back a month. :)

You know, I did notice that there were a lot of people playing at the slot machines where I was playing. It seemed like everyone else was winning, too! I don't think I will go back there when it is busy again. I prefer it with less people around.

I didn't mean to make it sound like it's ever not busy, but when I was there in June it wasn't too bad. The cab driver said in March it takes 10 minutes to get across the footbridges over the street because of the amount of people.

Vegas is busy a lot of the time but there are times when it is slower. I prefer those times. When I am there I stay away from the strip anyway so this time I really wouldn't know how many people were walking around there. I think March is busy because of a lot of conventions at that time and March Madness too.

Yes I think they do it on the casino floor but I don't think they do it in the rooms. I'm sure that explains why I have all the energy in the world when it comes to gambling at night. This last trip I was on one machine that kept losing and everyone around me was winning and finally quit trying to get that machine to pay off at almost 2 AM. On my way to my room I found another machine I like and decided to try one more time. I didn't get back to my room until almost 4 AM but I was $200 ahead instead of losing as I would have been had I just gone up to my room at 2. At home I never stay up until 2 AM let alone 4 AM.

Lots of people think that's true, but it's an urban legend.

Some casinos have oxygen bars where you pay to breathe it in, but they don't pump it through the casino floors or the hotel rooms.

Isn't oxygen highly flammable? No way they pump it in with all those people smoking.
