My two older sons saw it twice on their own. They told me I had to take their younger brother to see it. I hadn't heard anything about the movie, I didn't want to go.

I'm glad they convinced me, although I did almost die at least once... from laughing.

I would have thought that this movie's creators had been hitting the pipe pretty hard while coming up with the concept and writing the screenplay -- until I found out that they're a couple of BYU film school grads. Who says you can't be visionary and sober at the same time. Wacky Mormons!

sorry didn't think it lived up to the hype. And maybe that was the problem, everyone saying how amazing it was, so I expected alot. Don't get me wrong it was funny, very funny at moments. But I don't think I could watch the whole thing again, alot of reptitiveness. I always thought how good a movie would be that went nowhere, and now I see I was wrong. It seems like a guy thought of a bunch of jokes and made a movie to act as a vehicle for his stand alone jokes.

Well, i'm happy to say that i saw ND last night w/o needing 90 minutes of my life back.

Just about 25.. i watched about 45 minutes of it before turning it off. Had it on 2X most of the time through (you can still read the subtitles at 2X), and had some laughs at a few places.

Generally, the main character reminded me way too much of my brother in law for me to find it all that funny. I don't have the sense of humor that some of you do.. slapstick and boobies always make me giggle though.

This was awesome:

You know, I think I'm just gonna get me one of them lotto tickets. My wife says I gotta stop but I'm just feeling real positive today and I wanted to try out my luck and -

Cashier: Get out of here. I'm not selling lottery to a minor.

Napoleon Dynamite: I'm just gonna go get my ID.
[bumps into cooler]

Napoleon Dynamite: [outside gas station, to Pedro] Gosh! They wouldn't sell me one. I don't look old enough. Dang!

Pedro: Do you think I look old enough?

Pedro: [in store] Un lotto ticket por favor.

Cashier: [looks at Pedro's moustache, then sells ticket]

Napoleon Dynamite: [outside, to Pedro] Did you get one?
[scratches ticket]

Napoleon Dynamite: Yes! Three spuds! You picked a good one! That's ten dollars! Yes!

We're having a small blizzard here, so I rented this movie for tonight. Hope it's as funny as you say, John. This will be the first movie I watch on the home theater with the HDTV, minus the subwoofer which won't be here for about a week. I was looking for Sideways, but it must not be out yet.

I rented this tonight. It's the dumbest movie I've ever seen. I'd like the 90 minutes of my life back.I'm in this boat; so's my wife. Between us, a total of 3 chuckles. We spent most of the movie feeling sorry for these 2 orphans, or so it seems they're orphans. The theme seems to be that no matter who you are, you will get your 15 minutes of fame sometime. On a scale of 1 to 10, Bub rates this movie a 2, thanks to the soundtrack.

So over rated. The only funny parts(that I chuckled at) were the Rex Kwon Do scene and the scene where napolean's uncle throws the steak at napolean. My friends all go on and on about it, so I HAD to watch it. Waited for it to get funny.. and it never happened.

This was awesome:

Napoleon Dynamite: [walks into store] Hey, how's it goin'. Those egg rolls are looking pretty good. I might get me some later, I don't have any money right now.

Yes!

Don: Then who you gonna vote for?
Napoleon Dynamite: I'm voting for Pedro Sanchez, who do you think?
[Don scoffs and walks away]

I think that the point of the movie IS that it is incredibly stupid - that's what makes it funny! The biggest mistake people that don't "get" Napoleon Dynamite is that they sit around "waiting for it to start". There's no start - it just follows these incerdibly stupid lummoxes around and documents thier existence.

There were some parts that actually cracked me up...Napoleon "towing" Kip on his bike...the Rex Kwon Do scene...taking Pedro's bike on that "sweet jump"...hitting his uncle's car with the milkshake and the ensuing fence jump...the wedding song...I mean, there are part that are really funny!!

At least ND had an ending (such as it was). There was only ONE time when I got talked into seeing a movie based on all the hype and word of mouth and left the theater actually pissed off that I'd wasted my money and almost two hours of my life that I would never get back, and that was "Pulp Fiction". The only thing that kept me from walking out during the "movie" was that I was with a group of people. Halfway through it I started to understand how a wild animal could chew off thier own leg to get out of a trap.

The one movie I felt that way about was Magnolia. Most tedious movie ever.

My brother (whose tastes I usually agree with) raved about ND. But I really didn't enjoy it at all. And I normally enjoy quirky (for example - The Dark Backward, where Judd Nelson's character is a comedian who has a third arm growing out his back), and slow (for example, The Thin Red Line - much preferred over Saving Private Ryan).

It looks like everyone on the team saw the movie. They just went around quoting different parts all the time. It's amazing. They actually use the quotes in context of the conversations they are having.

The most quoted quote is "Your mom goes to college."

Actually, the one aspect of the movie that no one ever discusses is the setting. It seems to take place in the present (with all the mentions of the Internet and such) but everything about it is set in the 80s. The clothes are 80s...the houses are 80s-style...the stores look 80s...there's refernces to 80s pop culture (occasional dabbling into themes like 'The Karate Kid' break dancing) and place where it was filmed is so downright dreary looking!

I feel bad for the people that actually live in this town...it looks very dusty.

Napoleon Dynamite Star Not Dead
The latest celebrity death rumor going around is that Jon Heder, star of Napoleon Dynamite, died in a car accident while driving with a friend to Salem, Oregon. A website making this claim is here. People have also been speculating about this rumor on the IMDB message boards (Thanks to Ana for the link). Jon Heder, of course, is not dead (unless that person who looks like him and has been making media appearances is just an imposter).

As JDP mentioned before, this movie will go down as one of the greatest of all time and this thread will become legendary.

This movie isn't "American Pie" or "Happy Gilmore". There are no jokes per say. It's just the mannerisms and characteristics of the characters in the movie.

Well, I highly doubt that Napolean Dynamite ranks up there with Gone With The Wind, Schindler's List and Citizen Kane.

I mean it was a funny movie don't get me wrong here, I just can't believe we are still talking about it. And it was much funnier than Happy Gilmore and American Pie.

It was just like a very funny comedy central show, like Reno 911 or something

Well I'm not putting it up there with The Godfather or anything. I'm just saying it's a tremendous movie and people who like slapstick comedy most likely won't enjoy this.

The movie was 100% deadpan humor. You either get it or you don't.I got it just fine, but it still wasn't funny. This reviews on this movie are very split, mostly great or awful, with very little in between.

I believe it was Rick Pitino who once said "It stinks and it sucks and it sucks and it stinks."

Terrible movie. Oh, sure there were a few chuckles but otherwise it was very underwhelming.

I'm sorry you didn't get the movie.

although i thought the movie was great, i think it's a little unfair to assume just because somebody didn't like it was because they "didn't get the movie".

Good point. It is possible to get the movie and not find it funny.

Your mom goes to college.

This is a perfect example of the brilliance of this movie.

The line Your mom goes to college is not really funny. The fact that a 32 year old guy (who couldn't stand up in a brisk wind, who sits at home all day chatting on line, who has no life) shouts it out to a nerdy young girl is what's funny.

Some find it hilarious, others don't find it the least bit funny. It just depends on the individual. If I was the only person who found this movie to be a masterpiece, I would just shut up and enjoy it on my own. The fact that there are others out there that feel as I do, well, that's what makes me respond to this Thread whenever it resurfaces.

I watched Napoleon on DVD in a car for the first time last week. Maybe that'll be my goal. Watch it in new places. Movie theater, car, my house, friend's house. It's gonna be tough to think of new places though.

Maybe the dunes, or at a dance, or the Rex-Kwan-Do dojo.

What kind of car? There are lots of cars. Maybe you should seek to see the movie in many different brands of cars.

God damn, that's a good idea! Now, must find more friends with DVD players in their car.

Ya know what the ultimate would be? Watching Napoleon while on a motorcycle. Or a sledgehammer.

I liked Super Troopers and haven't seen it in a long time. My son brought it to college... he finally brought it home. I'm afraid it will vanish again.

Maybe I'll watch both.

Maybe I'll watch both at the same time.

What happens if you put two DVDs in that cupholder in the DVD Player at the same time?
