View Full Version : They're nuts: NFL players don't wear cups

If I asked the players today if they wanted to wear a cup, the guys would look at me like I was crazy," says Hatfield. (Hey, I know the feeling.) "Let me tell you something. If I'm Brian Westbrook or some other player who might get leg-whipped in the groin -- I'm wearing one. In this sport, you can really do some damage down there. I mean, cleats, helmets, knees flying around everywhere ... you're talking about some real discomfort to the groin area."

No kidding, and most college players don't, either. Football is a speed game, and it's really hard to run with a cup on. Receivers try to wear as few pads as possible as well, sometimes using child-sized pads in their pants because it helps them run faster than with regular pads.

I never wore one in football and never got hit there. Of course I played linebacker and was doing most of the hitting but you're always succeptible. I did wear it in baseball beacause I was a catcher and in lacrosse I didn't until I got NAILED there.

My bf tells me no one wears them in high school, either. He says it's really not very common at all to get hit anywhere near there. Now that I think of it, I've never seen this happen in the 15+ years I've been watching.
Good point on the speed issue as well.
