View Full Version : The official Jets analysis thread

Well, like it or not, each week you will be getting my Jets analysis.
Week 1:
We started off the season with a win so I'm happy. First I'll start with the positives. Chad looked like the MVP QB that he is although he had 2 bad throws on 3rd downs. I'm not worried about that though because everyone has a couple and now that it is out of his system, he will be fine. He also threw the ball deep and accurately connecting with Jonathan Carter for a 41 yard touchdown. Chad finished up the day 20/27 (with 2 passes that should have been caught easily and went off the hands of Moss and Becht) for 224 yards and threw 2 TD's with no interceptions. It was beautiful.
Next, Curtis Martin was fantastic. He had 29 rushes for 196 yards and scored a TD rushing and receiving.
Next up was our run defense. It has been awful for the last 3 years but today it was a strength. We held Rudi Johnson to 70 yards on 24 attempts which is only a 2.9 yard average.
Also, our defensive line was great and had a bunch of QB pressures although it only translated into 1 sack by John Abraham. DeWayne Robertson had a big tackle for a loss on Rudi Johnson and it looks like he is maturing and becomign the player the Jets thought they were drafting.
Lastly, Justin McCareins and Pennington look like they are developing a good chemistry as he had 5 catches for 66 yards.
Now for the negatives. The first was that on the first return of the game we fumbled and they recovered which setup their first touchdown. Not a good way to start a season but it happens and thankfully didn't hurt us.
I have stated that our secondary is a question mark and it proved to be that today even though Erik Coleman (a rookie safety) did have a huge interception at the end of the game. But, the Bengals do have a good offense and do have weapons so it isn't like we were facing a bad offensive team. By the way, Palmer looked very good.
The only other negative I can think of right now is that Anthony Becht sucks and they should use Chris Baker as the starting TE because Becht can't catch a ball.
All in all, it was a great game and if the secondary can step it up, this is a SB calliber team like I have stated all along.

You were pretty much right on here. Curtis was running like he was five years younger and Chad looked great. The secondary was the big problem I had, and yes, Becht can only catch the ball when he's in the endzone. Good job on the analysis.

I only saw part of the game, but I was amused that I turned it on as Pennington fumbled -- and "almost" lost it. Looks like he had a good game, though.

Yup. The reason why I'm not TOTALLY depressed right now. My guys lost their first, and to a lesser, Vickless, Falcons team at that, last year and went on to make the playoffs. I'll just keep reminding myself of this until next week...

Those Damn New Jersey RBs did me in in my main Fantasy League. In the off season I traded Curtis Martin & Tiki Barber, and wouldn't ya know it, I had to go against them the first week and they both actually did something. That 72 yard TD run in a meaningless game by Tiki killed me.
Sorry for the hijacking. :)

As for the Jets game, i agree with the general assesment. They looked very impressive. Robertson and Abraham were on, and everything was clicking for them. Except that secondary. Wish we had Winfield now. :)

The Jets looked like a totally different team... they controlled the line of scrimmage. Unbelievable, to watch a Jet defense make plays and finish tackles. The Jets were making takcles!! The O-line was moving bodies, Mawae looks like he's headed to the pro bowl again. This team has a LOT of potential, especially the linebackers...Barton looks like a tackling machine and Cowart even made some plays.

The Jets played well and will be in the playoff hunt this year. But they'll need a better test of their ablilties than the Bengals. Thay Cincy defense was putrid. I could score on that "D".

Sorry. As you know I had trouble getting into the league and I just got into it a few days ago and saw how awful my team was. I'll fix it up now. Also, I've been visiting my girlfriend this weekend so I haven't been thinking about it so much. Won't happen again.

What I want to see most out of this Jet team is the defense take a major step forward, and there were signs of that yesterday. The tackling should be much improved this year, and the talkies almost never take into consideration the importance of tackling. Solomon Wilcots said that the Jets were blowing up the Bengals running game. When was the last time anybody said that about them??? Also, Coleman did NOT get burned on the Chad Johnson TD pass, it pisses me off hearing Michael Kay go on about how bad the secondary was...Coleman was step for step with Johnson...there was slight incidental contact and then the guy made an unbelievable catch. He did not get " burned." The Jets secondary will be better than some people think. My concerns about the D this season is that the rookies will have their mistakes, and also that the linemen are a little small.

Yes, the tackling will improve. I want to see Vilma get more playing time over Hobson because I think he could be a great player for us. Yes, we dominated that running game. My favorite play was Robertson's stuff of Rudi Johnson. And you are right about the Chad Johnson TD pass. Not only was it a great catch but it was a great throw. Palmer is the real deal. My biggest concern though is still the secondary. We don't have the shutdown CB that I think would have put this team over the top. That could hurt us when facing some teams with great WR's.

Yeah, we don't have the lockdown corner but how many teams do? And besides thanks to the new rule changes regarding contact in the backfield, expect a lot of reputable corners to get torched this season. I think the line, while a stregnth thanks to the speed and depth of it, is a weakness because it is small... you want big bodies in front of smaller linebackers like Vilma. That's why Robertson is so key, we need a roadblock in the middle of this defense, especially when they play the 3 -4.

Definately. It looks like Robertson is going to be good this year too. Like almost every DT, they need a year in the NFL to adjust.
Good point about the CB's. It would have been nice if we could have gotten Champ Bailey for LaMont Jordan and the draft pick. How many times did Trent Green throw the ball in his direction last night?
PlsDontTearDownY.S.
09-13-04, 03:34 PM
Yeah, Champ Bailey is unreal. He's on his own pedestal right now, better than Ty Law or both Fish CB's. Hopefully a team philosophy with few penalties and fewer blown coverages will make this secondary cover up it's lack of a pro bowl CB. Maybe Derrick Strait could be that in a year or two.

I mean, people were panicking when we lost the series to the Tigers, not taking into account that THE TIGERS ARE A DECENT TEAM THIS YEAR. It's similar with the Bengals. They have some very good players and they were ranked smack dab in the middle of CBS Sportsline's power rankings for the pre-season, in front of the Jets, Cowboys, Redskins, Falcons, Raiders, and Bucs, along with eight other teams.
Sports Illustrated had them at between 7-9 and 9-7 with the playoffs a possibility. They're not the same Bengals that they have been the past few years.

Well, the 2000 draft was nothing to sneeze at. Getting a franchise QB, two All-Pro defensive linemen in Abraham and Ellis, and a great WR (though he's gone now) in Laveranues Coles was nothing to sneeze at. (Not to mention their starting TE, Becht, who is a bust as far as I can see, but he's still the starter.)

Thank you. Cincy is not a joke. A great running back, a QB who has huge potential, and showed it, and an awesome receiving corps. Their D is questionable, but they are not a bad team. They were in a playoff race last year up until the final two games.

Not a star, but a guy who gets to the ball and makes tackles. I remember he had 4 sacks last year and he blew up a few running plays in limited action. Still, Robertson has to be a star for that draft to be a success, since we traded so much to get him.

I agree with you here and I do think Robertson will turn out to be a star. But, as of right now, I think out of our 4 main LB's (Vilma, Hobson, Cowart, and Barton), I think Hobson should be the odd man out when we play the 4-3. I think Vilma is probably a better linebacker than Hobson is right now.

I hate to see a guy like Hobson on the bench, he's too good of a tackler. Tackling was the issue last year, along with lack of speed. Robertson is the key to our defensive success, IMO.

Well, we are 2-0 so I'm very happy. Once again Chad showed how great he is going 22/29 for 258 yards with 2 touchdown and (of course) 0 interceptions. To be fair, he had a couple bad throws and could have thrown an interception if Santana Moss didn't make a nice play to keep their CB from getting the pick. Also, Chad should have had 3 TD's but they called a TD pass a drop even though it was very obvious that Chris Baker caught the ball. I did think that Chad threw to the wrong guy on 3rd down a couple times. Of course, I couldn't see if guys were covered well downfield...
The defense played pretty well and held Tomlinson to under 100 yards although that was partly because they had to throw the ball more in the 2nd half because they were losing. Erik Coleman had another interception and a fumble recovery showing that he may well be the steal of the draft. Hopefully he can keep it up.
Once again Curtis Martin looked very good running the ball 32 times for 119 yards. In the first drive he looked fantastic and was stuffed on some bad play calls after that which contributed to his relatively low yard per carry.
All in all it was a pretty good game although we made it a bit too close as I think that Paul Hacket got too conservative when we had the lead in the 2nd quarter. He should have kept on calling aggressive plays to finish the game off.
EDIT: I just learned that Kevin Mawae broke his hand in the game... ................! That's awful. I hope he isn't out too long but he is key to our offense.
EDIT #2: Also, congragulations to Curtis Martin for becoming the Jets all time leading rusher breaking Freeman McNeil's record of 8,074!

2-0...start... sweet although I thought we should have run those guys out of the building. Good call on the conservative play calling...the Jets need that killer instinct. Dwayne Robertson had a really good game. Looks like he's gradually becoming that force in the middle that this defense lacked for so long. About Kevin Mawae...at least it wasnt a knee. Also, Lamont Jordan should get more playing time. The tackling was not as sharp this week, but holding Tomlinson under 90 yards on 19 carries is something to hang your hat on. It's becoming clear that stopping the run is a priority with this defense and that's the most encouraging sign so far for me.

Completely agree. It is also good that we have our bye-week this coming week. I forgot to mention Robertson in my original post. I think he is definately the real deal. The worst defensive play was that long pass to Tomlinson where we missed a bunch of tackles. Hopefully that will end soon but I was happy with the overall performance as he is one of the best RB's in the league.

The Titans never impress me, the Jets beat them last year with a much weaker team. Also, no Jet fan posting on this thread is popping champagne yet. " The Jets are going nowhere" ...how do you know? In today's NFL any team can make a run at it. And, what defines nowhere? A wild card spot is nowhere? I think Jet fans would be happy with a wild card spot, actually I expect it from this team. There is a lot of talent and potentially a lot of depth.

Who does that leave? Hey, rev up the engines, Herm Edwards. For the first time in 11 seasons, the Jets are 2-0, victors on Sunday over San Diego, which reverted to being the Chargers again. The Jets' schedule, to put it mildly, is kind. A bye next week, then games at Miami (Oct. 3), home against Buffalo (Oct. 10) and San Francisco (Oct. 17). Suddenly, the Jets could be 5-0 going into an Oct. 24 showdown at New England. OK, so maybe we've inhaled too many jet fumes, but it could happen.
And, like I've been saying all along, Chad has been showing he is the real deal.

as long as everyone on the Jets offense stays healthy.....I think this offense will be in the Top 3 in points by seasons end....
Chad is very good...and will only get better...we have a hall of fame RB who looks like will have his best season in 4 years....Sowell is turning into another Richie Anderson and could catch 40-50 passes out of the backfield....we are balanced at the WR position...Moss has the speed to beat you deep but is also proving he can run intermediate routes as well (he has perfected the 10-15 yard sideline pattern)....McCareins gives you the big WR the west coast offense needs....Chrebet is a solid #3 possession receiver....and Carter is the home run threat.....I think Baker will also prove to be a big threat from the TE position...just dont throw Becht the ball...ever again....please
our offensive line is one of the best in the league i think....Kendall proved to be a great pickup
as much as we all hated Hackett in past years....its obvious he just didnt trust Vinny....and Vinny wasnt well-suited to run the type of offense Hackett likes....but Hackett and Chad mesh...and Hackett seems to trust Chad (as evidence...just look at Hackett's play-calling...its been alot more aggressive)
our defense will be the question mark...specifically the secondary....we have 2 pro bowl DE's playing in a contract year....so I expect both to play well....the LB's are much improved....we'll see what the deal with Cowart's injury was....but the game and a half he played this year....he resembled the Cowart of 2000....
I think this team will surprise alot of people....and will win 11 games....and we will be 5-0 heading into Foxboro with a showdown with the 5-0 Pats in Week 6....:)

That all changed just before halftime against San Diego on Sunday. An MRI exam revealed Cowart sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, and coach Herman Edwards said Tuesday the veteran could miss four to six weeks.

I'm a Giants fan, so I'm not part of "us." ;)
But if Wilma plays up to his potential, your first team defense will be better than it has been. He can be a difference maker.

Yes. I have high hopes for Vilma but I was hoping he would be starting instead of Hobson, not Cowart. The good news about all this is that it is coming at a good point of the season. We have the bye week and then 3 relatively easy games. Now we just have to hope that Vilma, Hobson, and Barton stay healthy.

Vilma, Hobson and Barton can be a great linebacking corps. Hobson had 4 sacks in limited action last year. Also, John Abraham can drop back in 3-4 alignments.

Hobson is your "power" L/B. Vilma can't fight off 260 pound T/E or pulling guards. You need one muscleman at L/B. Vilma will od fine, but we lose him as a 4th L/B, with Cowatt out. I expect the jets to play more of a base 4-3, to not have to use the Jason Glenn's, K. Wright's, Mark Brown types too much.

as long as everyone on the Jets offense stays healthy.....I think this offense will be in the Top 3 in points by seasons end....
Mawae needs to stay healthy to allow the offense to really click, and continue to click. A major change in the line will effect all the skill players, in a negative way.
BTW - losing Evans for the season will really hurt. He's a firebrand out there. Evans, Cowatt and Mickens are vet leaders, and they will be missed. Hope Ellis steps up as a vocal leader, and Vilma becomes to the defense what Chad was to the offense in 2002.

The Jets are going to generate a lot of excitement by starting off by winning their first 4 or 5 thanks to their soft schedule..... Steve Serby will start writing daily columns about how "this is the year".
But ... they'll finish 8-8 or 9-7, and either miss the playoffs or get bounced in round one. Pennington just isn't that good, the defense isn't that good, and you'll probably notice a big fork sticking out of Martin's back around week 9.
IMO - of course.

Your crazy. Check the schedule before you tell me we will be 8-8 or 9-7. Pennington isn't that good? What more can the kid do to prove he is an excellent QB? He rarely turns the ball over, he is incredibly accurate with his passes, he NEVER throws an interception in the red zone, and, he has seemed to develop a good touch on the long ball this year. He might possibly end up being the best QB in the league this year. And about Martin, he always finishes seasons strong. That's just the kind of guy he is. He always plays through pain and gets the job done. Also, Herman Edwards has said he's going to get Lamont Jordan some more carries to take the load off Curtis which is a good idea and will keep him fresh.
Serby will write those articles and I will agree. This is our year.

Another game and another win. The J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets are 3-0 all of a sudden. Not a pretty game to say the least but we got the job done and the D looked very good while the offense wasn't that great.
Lets start with the positives. Curtis Martin had 24 rushes for 110 yards and a TD agaisnt a good Miami defense. That is pretty much the only plus I can think of on offense. Defensively we had a few. Firstly, John Abraham had a hell of a day getting 2 sacks and he led to one of the interceptions with his pressure. He also got the last fumble to close the game. Donnie Abraham had a pick returned for a TD when the score was 10-9 Jets. Eric Barton made a nice interception too. I also liked the way Jonathon Vilma played as he had 8 tackles. We also stuffed the run (except for that one play).
Now the negatives. Well, Chad threw a bad interception with time running down in the first half. It was his first interception of the year and those things will happen. He won't have many more. His numbers weren't that good either as he went 14/24 for 143 yards. The offense went 3 and out a number of times also. Personally, I just think the Miami defense played a great game but we still should have done more.
Anyways, I will repeat, the Jets are now 3-0 and tied for the division lead with the overated Pats.

I knew this would be an ugly game....and that the D would have to step up and win it for us....and they did just that
thats the sign of a good team....the offense carried us the first 2 games....today the offense struggled (mostly due to a very good Miami D)....but the defense rose to the occassion....made big plays...and got the job done
there is no doubt in my mind that we will be 5-0 heading into Foxboro....and I hope the Pats are undefeated too....so we can be the ones to end the streak

the Brien FG shocked me....I wanted them to go for it....I never expected him to make it.....when I saw them linining up I thought they may try the old "snap it to the kicker...pooch punt" thing....but he made it....and made it by alot
I honestly didnt mind the conservative approach today....there was no reason to be ultra-aggressive....especially once we got the lead.....Miami's offense is pretty bad and u know that you dont need to score alot of points to beat them.....what you dont wanna do is be aggressive and make mistakes and let them score easy points (which almost happened with Freeman's INT at the end of 1st half)......if this was against a good offensive team of course you wanna be aggressive and put up alot of points...but in this particular game u dont do anything stupid on offense that could lead to mistakes...win the field position battle....and make their offense drive 80-90 yards to score points....thats what the Jets did.....and thats why they won

Well, what upset me was the numerous 2nd and long draw plays that were ran (and are always run in that situation). To be honest, I trust Chad to throw the ball and not make mistakes. He made one today, which is allowed since it was his first pick of the season, but he isn't going to make more than one in a game. I also want to see J-Mac and Santana Moss get the ball more. It seems like they weren't in the picture at all today. Either way, we won the game and we won a game where Chad played badly. That is a very good sign. Good teams win a game like this and we did. Bring on the Bills!

Yeah, but it was a closer game than the score states. The Bills had a chance to tie it up with less than 3 minutes to go. And, if the refs had gotten the call right with Dillon on the fumble, it would have been a lot closer.

I think the combination of playing a good defense...playing against a team with a bad offense that doesnt score many points....and Chad having a shaky game.....led to Hackett being conservative....I trust Chad as well....but being that he had an off game....and being that we didnt need to score alot of points...just play smart.....was the main reason Hackett called a conservative game
Chad seemed off today with alot of his throws.....he is lucky Knight dropped that 2nd INT late in the 4th...and Moss and McCareins being quiet has alot to do with Madison and Surtain....

I know -- thus, the winkie thing. But they really didn't have a chance to tie it...
Like I said elsewhere, the call was right, but the whistle was blown too early. My guess is that they do that intentionally to avoid injuries, but that's just a guess, and it's still a mistake, imo.
You know what, though? Bills did plenty to hurt themselves, and the Pats made the plays when they needed to -- I have no reason to think that wouldn't have continued to have been the case. (One example: the correctly called incomplete pass that initially was thought to be a fumble by Givens, where Fletcher fumbled it out of the endzone from the Pats' 2. This stuff isn't luck. The Pats are better.)
(And in fairness, the play where the punter dropped the ball but ran for a first down, and the Bills proceeded on their only offensive TD drive -- that isn't luck, even though some might complain it is. The punter made a good play after a near disastrous mistake. Give credit where credit is due.)

With the Dolphins comedic way of coughing up the ball, I'm amazed that the Jets managed only 17 points. This is the first real defense they played in '04. The 'Phins play in Foxboro next week. The Miami "D" hasn't given up yet. That said, no way will Miami beat NE on Sunday.

I like our defense. I know the fish are a terrible offensive team, but what impressed me was how our d-line played. Every one of them made an impact, and Dwayne Robertson looks seriously tough in the middle. We now have an oppurtunistic, aggressive ball hawking defense with speed and improved tackling, it's so different and better than that cover 2 sit back-and-watch defense we got used to seeing. Offensively, it was good to see Curtis running and the line blocking with success against a good Miami front seven. I expected more out of the passing game, but maybe I'm not giving the fish secondary enough credit. That or Hackett just didn't want to test them knowing how hard they were struggling to score. That lack of killer instinct could come back to bite our collective asses, so come on Paul go for the jugular!! Good win, but they need to forget about the Patsies and concentrate on Buffalo and Frisco before they get ahead of themselves. It's still a learning process.

Another game and another win. The J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS are 4-0. The game was way too close for comfort but we still got the W so I'm happy.
All and all, Chad looked very good going 31/42 for 301 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception. The interception was an awful throw when Chad was trying to avoid the sack and threw the ball right to the Bills guy (don't remember who it was). Besides that pass, he did good. The defense looked good and John Abraham had a great game. We almost picked off a couple passes but didn't until the end of the game. Curtis had an allright game against a very good run defense running for 77 yards on 22 carries. Also, Wayne Chrebet was HUGE in this game catching 8 passes for 90 yards and (I believe) 3 3rd down catches to get the first down.
I didn't like how we didn't go for it on 4th and 1 on their 40 yard line and didn't like the play calling on our 2nd to last drive when we were up 13-7.
I'm sure there is more to add here so please do.

I thought the offense played well.....we would have scored alot more points but we made too many mistakes in Buffalo territory (missed 28-yard FG....Baker fumble at the 10....Chad INT at the 30).....I mean i think we ended up with close to 400 total yards....so we did move the ball and have alot of good drives....we just shot ourselves in the foot too much....
the defense looked great for most of the game....the 1st Buffalo TD I thought they may have relaxed a little too much....I give credit to the Buffalo OC with that 3rd and 9 pitch to McGahee....the Jets were blitzing everyone...and that was the perfect play call....the 2nd TD I give credit to the Buffalo O line for picking up an all out blitz and for Bledsoe making a great throw to Evans.....
but Chad responded like a champion.....7-8 on the game winning drive....clutch passes to McCareins and Becht......bottom line....we got the W.....these division games are always so tough no matter what the teams records are.....
I also thought Abraham just was awesome today (can we get this guy signed to a long-term deal NOW....why wait).......Vilma had a excellent game as well

Yes, I forgot to talk about Chad in that final drive. I just knew Chad would get the job done right there and he did.
Yes, Vilma played a very good game. I want to add that it is so refreshing to see the Jets defense finally be able to stop the run. We're getting the job done. BRING ON THE 49ERS.

yes it is very refreshing....Henry has owned the Jets D in past years....it was nice to shut him down today
its nice in general to see us have guys who actually have speed.....and can run all over the field and make plays.....Abraham looks like a different player this year....whether its that he's 100% healthy or playing for a big contract (or both)....he has been the best DL in the NFL so far this year.....Im ecstatic with the play of all our LBs...Cowart (before injury)...Vilma...Hobson...Barton have all looked great.....our LBs killed us last year and they were such a detriment to the team....this year I think its our strength.....and I only see our defense improving on a weekly basis

JWF, I've got a question for you re. Pennington. One of your criticisms of Brady was that he is in a system where he throws only short passes. I watched some of today's Jets/Bills game, and it seemed like Pennington was throwing a bunch of short passes. Checked the #s, and his yards per completion seem to bear that out. omething different this year for the Jets' offense?

It isn't different as our offensive coordinator (Paul "can't" Hackett) is very conservative. I want them to open the playbook up more and throw the ball more downfield. Now, the difference between Chad and Brady is that Chad is more accurate and also is better at throwing the ball downfield than Brady is. I feel that when Brady throws the ball long, it is almost never completed and very often intercepted. When Chad does, he gets the job done.

This team needs to develop a killer instinct , which today showed again.

You can say that again. That's why I wanted them to go for it on that 4th and 1. You make it there and score another TD, then the game is over. This game should have been a much easier win than it was. Hopefully next week against the 49ers will be the big blowout win we all want.
cubswin-I had it all posted before and then my computer froze but the stat I had was YPA where he had 7.2 and 7.8 (about) YPA in the last 2 seasons. I didn't see a YPC stat but you can just figure he completes almost 70% of his attempts. The knock on Chad has always been that he doesn't have a good arm so he canl't throw the ball down the field. I disagree with this and think he is one of the best throwing the ball deep accurately.

neither YPA nor YPC says much about effectiveness on long throws versus short throws.
There are splits on length of attempt, but I don't know how to find them for last year or '02.

Goodwin and Brent Smith will start in their place......thats a big loss....especially Kendall....but with that said....we should be able to beat the crappy 49ers without them
but they better be healthy for the Pats game

The 49ers is a "trap" game. With the Foxboro game looming in two weeks, the Jets will need to keep their focus against SF. The Jets secondary is young and will be challenged by Tim Rattay who shredded an underrated Cardinals defense. If the Jets stay away from turnovers and apply pressure to Rattay, they will come into Foxboro unbeaten.

I think that the Bills were a bigger trap than the 9ers, but no game in the NFL is an easy win, so they had better not look past them. I'm afraid of it too, given who they play the next week, but I hope that Edwards can help them keep their focus.

Freakin Paul Hackett. This man is so conservative he makes Sean Hannaty look like Ricky Williams. The damn team is 0-4, why can't we pass on first down? Why not actually try and fool the other team? Time to open it up, we should be dominating this team. Hackett's holding back the offense once again. Defense is soft right now too.
Edit: Great coaching by Donnie Henderson to get down from the booth to the field and put some fire under the D's feet to get them moving and tackling.

I'd like to start with this. If anyone deserves the game ball it is Donnie Henderson. I don't know about you, but he looked PISSED when he came down and the defense responded. The 49ers did not score a point from the time he came down from the booth.
We came out flat in this game and were completely out played. It was pathetic. I missed the first part of the first quarter but from what I saw in the beginning, it was a disgrace. Our defense wasn't doing the job and neither was our offense.
In the end, Chad had a good day going 20/30 for 222 yards with 0 interceptions. He did miss Wayne Chrebet wide open for a TD on a 3rd down but I'm not sure whose fault that was. I can fault him for a pass he didn't make to a wide open receiver in the 2nd half (forget who it was) that would have been an easy TD. The defense played well in the end and Vilma had a huge interception to win the game. Curtis Martin also had a pretty good game running the ball 25 yards for 111 yards with 2 TD's. Also, Lamont Jordan got in the game and had 2 rushes for 25 yards and a TD. At that point of time, he really sparked the offense.
In the end we won the game even though we were missing our two starting guards, including Jason Kendall who has been huge this year, and Santana Moss. Hopefully they will all be ready for the game against the Patsies.
Congrats to the Jets for starting a season 5-0 in the first time in Jets history.

Congrats to the Jets for starting a season 5-0 in the first time in Jets history. The Jets did what a good team does when it's better than the other team...they won. I don't care how bad it looked, that's still an NFL team out there and besides, how many true blowouts have we seen this year? ( the 41-7 type) The coaching staff made good adjustments, LaMont Jordan FINALLY got some plays and the Oline controlled the line of scrimmage in the second half. Dwayne Robertson is really coming on, and the D held Barlow to under 100 yards. I might be wrong, but I don't think any one halfback has run for 100 yards on us, including Travis Henry, Rudi Johnson and LT. That's good stuff right there. Now it's time to go up there and beat the Patsies in their house. What a message that would send. Lets get it done!

I forgot about Dewayne. John Abraham had a big sack on Rattay and on the replay, Dewayne had 3 guys on him and was pushing them all back. That's the kind of thing you don't see in the stats but he has been huge this year. Abraham is the man by the way, and he must be resigned. I am pretty sure you are right, no RB has run for 100 yards against us. (what a difference from last year!!!!).
BRING ON THE PATSIES!!!

Congrats to the Jets for starting a season 5-0 in the first time in Jets history.
the Jets def came out flat....whether it was the classic "trap game" scenario or just that the 49ers played a hell of a 1st half....the Jets looked lost
but give Edwards and Co. credit for making adjustments....and we just dominated the 2nd half....2 awesome drives by the offense...nice to see LaMont finally get some action...and he sparked the team a bit....another good game from Curtis....how about Anthony "butterfingers" Becht actually making some plays downfield??
and the defense just totally shut things down in the 2nd half....another good game from Vilma including the game sealing INT....Abraham was a monster again....give Robertson and Ferguson credit for creating havoc and holding down Barlow
my one problem....is that our WRs need to do a better job of getting open downfield....I know we didnt have Moss today which was a factor....and I know everyone is getting on Hackett....but he called some down the field plays today... if u taped the game...sit down and watch....and count how many times Pennington drops back....looks downfield....see's his first 2 or 3 reads covered....and has to dump the ball to his checkdown....which is usually Curtis or Sowell......idk whats going on....but Moss (when he comes back)....JMac...Chrebet...Carter.....all need to do a better job of running routes and getting open
I cant wait till next week!! the national spotlight will be focused on our game....hopefully Kendall...Moore...and Santana will all be able to play....we need our full team healthy and ready to go....BRING ON THE PATS!!

He should be getting about 7 carries a game. That will do two things. 1. Lamont showed he can be a very good RB (especially in the SF game) and it will give Curtis Martin a rest during the games. 2. It will help make sure that Curtis Martin won't get tired at the end of the season.

Allright, so we give the Patsies another set of downs after having 12 men on the field on a 4th down punt. Of course, their offense can't get the ball in the endzone and has to settle for a fieldgoal. Pretty pathetic.
Anyways, it's 6-0 Pats, while it should be either 3-3 or (most likely) 7-3 Jets. Lucky, lucky patriots. We've still got this game though. We'll put 7 on the board now to take the lead.

And, it wasn't like the Patriots forced a fumble, Sowell just dropped the freaking ball. God, what a lucky team. 7-6 JETS!

Halftime. 13-7 Patsies. The patriots are so freaking lucky that we went to that goddamn 3 rush defense. I've heard that Herman and Henderson have argued about that and that Henderson wants to be more aggressive. Herman's a freaking idiot. If you rush 3 men, your giving the QB all the time in the world to make a pass. So goddamn annoying. The only good thing is we have the ball and either our offense is really good or their defense is overated. Either way, we are moving the ball on them. And, if Herman learns from his stupid ass mistakes of rushing 3 men at times, our defense will be fine.

Whenever we don't rush the QB and especially when we only rush 3 guys and drop everyone else in coverage, they complete the pass. You can't ask your defense to cover everyone when you give the QB all the time he needs to make a pass. It's ridiculous and I don't understand what the hell Herman (if it was in fact him who made that call) is thinking.

Thats something that the Jets just don't do and has nothing to do with the Patriots talent. They are lucky that Sowell dropped a ball after he caught it for a fumble inside the Patriots 10 yard line. That they have. The Pats blew some good chances early to take a commanding lead, and only wound up getting two FGs.
If it wasn't for the fumble in the Jets first possession, there is no doubt in my mind that they'd be leading this thing.

Don't forget about the 12 men on the field for their punt.
EDIT: Lamont shows why he should be getting at least 7 carries a game with a 12 yard rush. Of course, he is taken out of the game right after. Good punt there. It's time for the defense to make a big play and get a turnover here.

That, too. That was just a dumb penalty to take.
It seems like the Pats are getting away with a lot of calls. Are they afraid the NE fans are going to storm the field or something? The refs need to stop being wussies.

The Jets should have won this game. They were the better team. If it wasn't for having 12 men on the field in their 2nd drive and for freaking Sowell dropping the ball, we win the game. That's all there is to it. Also, if it wasn't for the biggest bull................ reversal of a pass interference call on the pats, we also probably win the game. The Patriots got lucky. That's all there is to it. The Jets went out there and proved they were the better team, but the patriots get the calls and to their credit, they didn't make 2 stupid mistakes like we did.
I mean, how do they throw a flag for a very obvious pass interference and then decide it wasn't???? Can someone explain that to me? That isn't talent, that is bull................. The Patriots better give the refs some front row tickets to the WS game tonight because they gave them the game with that call. Not to mention they called roughing the passer on Robertson when it wasn't.
Whatever, it has become fairly obvious that to beat the patriots, you have to beat them and the refs. Maybe in New York they won't give the patriots as many calls. If they actually call the game fairly here, we will win.

After watching the Pats today, they're not this GREAT team everyone makes them out to be. They're good, yes, but great? Hardly.
Tom Brady got sacked three times and they still won. How is that right?
Stupid calls and stupid plays is what lost the game today for the Jets. They won't be playing in Foxboro next week either, so it make work to the Steelers advantage.
God, New England teams have made me miserable this week.

agreed....the roughing the passer penalty on Robertson made me puke.....all he did was push him to the ground he didnt even hit him....and the reversal on the pass interference call on JMac was UNBELIEVABLY RIDICULOUS!!! why is it that New England gets every single call their way?? Samuel initiated contact....pushed off....THEN made a play on the ball....the only reason he was in position to break up that play was cuz he PUSHED OFF!!!!
we also hurt ourselves with the 12 man on the field penalty....and Sowell's fumble.....I also was ready to jump off a roof after the stupid moronic idiotic play call on the last drive....3rd and 5 at the NE 25....we were moving the ball well....JMac nearly makes an unbelievable TD catch....we have them on their heels a bit.....and we run a FREAKIN DRAW play to Martin....which of course doesnt work....the game is on the line.....throw the god damn ball

The better team didn't make dumb mistakes like a fumble at a key time and a 12-men-on-the field penalty.
The pass interfernece call (or lack thereof) was right, imo -- arm or not, the DB had better position, riding Chrebet (was he the WR?) out of bounds as he went for the ball.
Jets are good, but not as good. Brady showed he's a better QB, completing both deep and short balls. Pennington failed on his deep attempts. Dillon > martin. Only thing I though NY was better at was pressure from their line -- but that isn't something the Pats rely on, so it doesn't concern me much.

disagree -- he would have been out of bounds regardless, b/c of the d-back's position and where the ball was thrown
re. Martin v. Dillon: whatever you say. I guess our run defense is just better than yours. (Seriously, though, seems clear to me that both are solid, but martin lacks Dillon's big play ability.)
btw, what did you think of Edwards's decision to go for it in the 4th and inches situation w/about 7 minutes left in the 4th? Though it worked out, I thought it was a foolish gamble -- didn't show much faith in the defense, imo.

You sound like an old man. "One of these days..." Yea, and? Everyone loses. Point is, your team didn't beat us. I don't need to shut up at all. I disagree...I think if Samuel wasnt pushing off/grabbing...JMac was in perfect position to make the catch
I'll take Martin anyday...our run defense is alot better then it used to be....I thought we did ok on Dillon for most of the game....he had that 1 really big run....granted he was more big-play ability then Martin....but Martin isnt flashy...never was....I think thats why Martin never gets any respect....he isnt gonna run off 50 yard runs off do 360's and break 8 tackles...he will pound away and occassionally get 10-15 yard bursts...yet he is the 7th all-time leading rusher in NFL history....I'll take a guy like that on my team
I totally agreed with the 4th down call....I felt that if we punted....the Pats would have driven and at least gotten a FG....putting the game away....as Jets fans we have seen our coaching staff be so ultra-conservative....its nice to see us be aggressive for once....plus we only needed 1 inch and we have the best center in football....if you cant get the 1st down on that sneak....you deserve to lose

I recall a cheap "point of emphasis" illegal contact call on CB Randall Gay that nullified a 3rd down sack and kept the Jets alive only to have Sowell fumble it away. :D
EDITED: The POE call was on Sowell's fumble, not on the Jets scoring drive.

Bottom line:
That late first half TD drive by Brady was clutch. The Chad couldn't rally the troops in the second half.
Brady was playing with a depleted WR corps that dropped plenty of his passes and still put up good numbers.
After a shaky opening series, the Pats "D" wound up having their best game of the season. They contained Martin and the DBs blanketed the Jets WRs.

Wow ... this is the most predictable post of the year. Sure, the Jets are better, they just didn't win. Sure, Pennington's better, he just didn't have as many completions or yards.
You can whine all day ... but here are the facts:
Herm Edwards was completly outcoached.
Dillon outrushed Martin.
Brady completely dominated Pennington (how many times did Chad throw behind his receivers -- while Brady threw accurately downfield all day)
NE defense outhit the Jets
The Patriots played better in all facets of the game -- because they are better in all facets of the game. Blaming this loss on two penalties is really pathetic.

It's no accident that the Patriots have the highest percentage of college graduates on their team. Belichick coached teams play smarter and don't make mistakes to cause losses.
Would it kill a Jets fan to just give credit to a better Pats team and tip your cap to Tom Brady and the Patriots?

Here's my analysis: F**K PAUL HACKETT
This man is killing this team. What the F is wrong with him, it's like he's committed to doing anything he can to limit this offense. We got a Rhodes scholar quarterback, why the hell can't Hackett let him audible?
Also, the better running back is on the bench, IMO. Lamont is more explosive, and better at breaking tackles. Curtis is still good, but Jordan needs more carries. Bottom line, Hackett's play calling is absolute GARBAGE. With the weapons this offense has, we should be putting up way more points, and not just against NE.

I don't know how much Brady dominated Pennington, as I don't think either QB had a great game. Brady was 20-29 for 230 yards, which is good, Pennington was 19-30 for 162, which obviously isn't good, but given the way the Patriots defense played I think it's acceptable.
Too many Pats fans here are seeing this as a shot against Chad and aren't giving their defense enough credit.
Sure, the Jets had more bad breaks than the Pats, with the PI call, the roughing call, and, most importantly, the fumble inside the Pats 10, but bad breaks are a part of football and you still need to find a way to win with them. Sadly, it seems that the Pats are getting a hell of a lot of breaks right now, but I can't blame them for taking them. There are a lot of games where a team gets a number of good breaks and can't capitalize on them, but that's exactly what the Patriots are doing-capitalizing on their good breaks-and that's the mark of a good football team.
It was a winnable game for both teams that could have changed with one play, but for my Jets, that play didn't happen, so I for one need to give credit to the Pats. However they won, they won, and that's all there is to it.

IMO - Pennington was all over the place ... seemed that the majority of his completions were dinks and dunks.... his throws downfield were all ugly. Brady was sharp ... and could have easily been 23-39 with an extra 50 yards had there not been 3 drops on perfectly thrown balls. Not to mention the fact, Brady orchestrated a perfect 2 minute drill at the end of the half. Lastly .. Brady's stats were hurt by the fact that Dillon was having his way with the Jets D. Why pass if your RB is picking up 5+ per carry?

As I posted earlier, the Pats WRs are ailing. They still are w/o Deion Branch and Troy Brown. David Patten is not physical and lacks big hands. David Givens is getting plenty of attention. There's a reason why Brady went to Dan Klecko twice. Bethel Johnson has speed to burn but has bad hands and has had a bad head on his shoulders. If/when Branch and Brown come back healthy, this offense will be scary.

The pass interference call would have put us in field goal range and we would have kicked a field goal at the end. If they didn't call that BS roughing the passer call, you might have only gotten a field goal at the end of the half, but even if you got the TD, the game still would have been tied at the end.

It's also the passive defense that they played at the end of the 2nd half. That rushing 3 crap doesn't work and I'm pretty sure that that was Hermans' doing, not Henderson's.
By the way, I fully admit that the Patriots coaching outcoached the Jets. Most teams do.
I want to say this though. After watching the game yesterday, I fully believe that if these teams played each other 10 times in NE, the Jets win 5 of them.

This thread is not about what the Patriots do, I could care less. And yes, there WERE garbage calls but whatever. I'm just hoping that next time we're in a game with the Patriots that Hackett takes his skirt off and the defense doesn't clam up and rush three linemen. I hate that kind of soft defense, it reminds me of the last few seasons of cover-2 chickens**t defense. We were outcoached, plain and simple. Example: LaMont Jordan riding pine all game. This guy is so ready to play it's a shame he gets ignored by theis offense. He's explosive, string and agile. There is NO reason for him to not get 10 carries/touches a game, unless it's about Curtis' pride, which I don't think is the case, he's too professional for that.

That's because the Patriots usually get all the calls their way. They have no right to argue about calls, especially after the game they had against the Titans last year.

Colvin was not held at all on the TD. That was a block. Was it taunting? Yes. The point is, I think that if the tables were turned and there were two bad calls like the ones that were called against us called against them, I think the Jets would have won. If anything, they showed they can play with the Patriots. They showed they are no joke and they are a good team. But, we will have to prove that by beating the Patsies when they come to the Meadowlands. And, any of you NE fans, I will put my money where my mouth is for that game. With the front seven that this team has, it makes no sense at all unless you are running scared. No blitzing late, nothing. The coaching leaves a lot to be desired, as usual. Offensively, we are more predictable than the calendar, and it's Hackett's fault. Give an offense like this to an OC with some bolas, and they are almost unstoppable.

To review how things are in JWF's world.
1) The refs are fixing it for the Patriots.
2) The Patriots get all the breaks and they are the most overrated team ever.
3) Tom Brady stinks and Chad Pennington is better than Joe Montana.
4) The Jets win and it's because they deserved it. The Jets lose and they were robbed.
5) The Jets are never guilty of penalties. The Pats hold every play.

Yes, I was particularly enjoying JWF's "analysis" of how lucky and pathetic the Patriots are and how the Jets got screwed by the refs--sorry that some other users of the board might step in to disagree.
Here's my analysis of the Jets after watching the game yesterday:
Their defense is better than I expected. The secondary is kind of soft, but probably will improve with more time in the system. The run defense was solid, but got tired as the game went along.
The offense was actually far worse than I expected, particularly Pennington. I was shocked at how many balls were thrown innacurately. And his arm just doesn't seem strong enough to rifle it in there when necessary. Even if he is accurate (as I suspect he usually is given his completion percentage), he's going to need his receivers to get a lot of separation otherwise they are going to get tackled as soon as the ball gets there (since his ball takes so long to arrive).

Umm, yea, let's make an internet bet. Sounds good to me, although I see no way for either of us to collect on it. I'll take it if you will.
PM me, or if you want my email just say so, and we'll figure it out. No hostility, just a bet. I'd like to see the Jets in the playoffs, as Curtis Martin is one of my favorite players. I just honestly don't think they will make it. Of course, giving you my email would probably be a mistake since you're nothing but hostile towards anything Patriots related.
Have you added up those numbers yet?

This is my personal observation...
I think that there are Jets fans that can't get that 30-17 victory at NE (the Pats last home loss) out of their heads. That game was played in late December of 2002 when the Pats were old and banged up. Pennington shredded an aging NE secondary as Santana Moss torched Pats DBs. It was a drubbing. The Pats were never in the game.
The 2004 Pats are far better than the 2002 version. Their DBs and DL are very good. Eugene Wilson and Asante Samuel are comers. Vince Wilfork is looking good at NT. Do I think the Jets suck? Of course not. They will make the playoffs? Yes. If they recover from this loss, they will nip at the Pats heels all season.
BTW Edwards is the only coach that has had success coaching a team in Tuna's wake.

my lil bro and I ( Sowell Train) went to the game this weekend, and were able to score 50 yrd line 2nd row behind jets bench seats. Besides getting on the field and finding out what we thought was true- Jason Glenn is the man, great guy gave us high 5's and got pumped with us when they came out of the tunnel, we were able to see some greta things.
-L Jordan coming to Sowell after the fumble.
- Kevin M. getting everyone pumped on D !!! Yes D
-Chad speaking to NO 1 durning the game ...and then-L Jordan coming to Sowell after the fumble.
-P Kendall coming off the field after chad missed ona 3rd and 5 or so late in the 3rd/early 4th and getting on the phone and yelling at HACKETT to "Run the F*cking ball behind me EVEYTIME"---then slamming the phone down .....on the following drive we rand 2 plays in a row, CuMar got 6 then 8 on two plays both behind Kendall...on the second run he stops looks at HERM and gives him a DOUBLE PUMP fist right in his face....it was AWESOME ...he is such a leader it was obvious...he and KM have something going...He was amped and focused and really just amazing.
PSS. Santana Moss was being yelled at by coachs multiple times, he doesnt run the right routes and hes just lost right now
bottom line --every JET fan needs to sit this close 1 time......and PK is a steal and an amazing O-Line man !
By the way, Kendall was our best FA signing.

What I'm most afraid of is Zach Thomas completely overpowering Martin and the offensive line, make it a really low-scoring game, and lose.
But they're doing well so far, the defense is holding up, but it's only the first half.
