I noticed it basically the minute I got to practice this morning. I got a funny feeling yesterday when I noticed 1. Quincy wasn't getting hardly any reps--basically none, and 2. Vinny, Tony, and Drew were hanging out in one group and Quincy was hanging out away from them with Antonio Bryant and some linemen.

Anyway, when I noticed Q's absence this morning, I asked around and heard he'd been released. I sent my dad to ask around, and he heard radio reports that Parcells had been unimpressed with his "lackluster" performance and that Quincy and Drew had gotten into it, but I don't know when. That could explain the clique-ing I noticed. I rushed home immediately and am awaiting more news like everyone else.

My brother and I had been trying to resolve our liking for Quincy with our desire to see Drew brought along, but I guess now we don't have to. The Drew Henson Era is upon us, and I'm excited. Seeing him in practice, he's got the stature of Aikman, a great arm like Aikman, and calls signals just like Aikman--he's a QB through and through. Parcells must be really impressed by him (and from camp reports, I know he is) to make a move like this and want to get started on bringing him along as quickly as possible.

This may force me to alter my prediction, but the Dodgers have already taught me not to underestimate anyone. I'm no longer so sure about this year, but when Henson comes along, and Julius comes along, we will win. In Tuna I trust.

Cowboys cut Carter after positive cocaine test

Quarterback Quincy Carter is expected to be released by the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday after testing positive for cocaine, league sources told FOX NFL Sunday insider John Czarnecki.

Club owner Jerry Jones confirmed that Carter has been released. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells is expected to hold a regularly scheduled news conference at 11:30 a.m. PT Wednesday at the team's training camp headquarters in Oxnard, Ca.
Carter entered the league in the NFL substance abuse program and this is his second positive test, which by NFL rules would warrant a four-game fine — not a suspension.

According to an earlier broadcast report, Carter was AWOL from practice Wednesday morning, and the absence is not injury related and the Cowboys will be making an "official" statement regarding Carter after the conclusion of practice. But other broadcast reports have intimated that the Cowboys quarterback will be released, leaving Vinny Testaverde and Drew Henson to battle for the starting position.

Micky Spagnola, the station's Cowboys beat reporter, compared the situation to that of Tony Banks three years ago where Banks was absent from practice and it was announced after practice that he had been cut.

This move comes on the heels of unanimous opinions that Henson has been the best quarterback in camp thus far, which had to be at least mildly upseting to Carter, who started all 16 games for the Cowboys in 2003, leading them to a 10-6 record.

In his first season as the full-time starter - after splitting time the first two seasons - Carter threw for 3,302 yards, but had 21 interceptions and 17 touchdowns. He was intercepted at least twice in six games.

A little bit. I'm shocked and stunned, but not really angry. I'm a bit disappointed since I really thought Carter had progressed under Tuna and was going to be entering his 2nd year in a row under the same offensive coordinator for the first time in his career. I love the way he ran play action. I really thought he'd be better than last season, when he only threw 4 more picks than TD (17/21 ratio), which was a lot better than what I'd expected.

But still, in spite of all that, I think every Cowboys fan knew that he wasn't going to be our "Quarterback of the Future." The Cowboys have a long, for the most part unbroken, history and legacy of awesome QBs, a legacy that we as fans demand be upheld, and I guess I knew Quincy wouldn't be the one to uphold it. I firmly believe Drew can be the one to do it. Parcells, like I said many times before, is building this team to be good not only now, but next year, and for a lot of years into the future. I just gotta be patient.

Banquo, thanks for that story. I'm absolutely shocked at that news. Absolutely shocked. He never seemed like the type of guy who'd do that stuff... always seemed like a mama's boy, good Christian, and by all accounts, instead of going out after games, he'd stay and watch film and try to get better... Wow. I learned with Kobe last year, I guess I'm learning with Quincy this year... you never really KNOW these athletes and shouldn't be surprised by anything.

Vinny is no longer a starting QB so you better hope Henson can do it in his first season. I'm shocked right now. I believe it was yesterday that I watched SportsCenter and they interviewed Quincy who said that he would "definately" be the starting QB for the Cowboys.

On the FAN they said it looks like Vinny is starting...also mentioned that on Monday Tuna said the QB job was Caters to lose based on his hard work etc...Tuna's such a phoney...

But it was obvious Carter wasn't the one to lead the team to the Superbowl...

It's not Tuna's fault that Carter tested positive for cokaine. Plus, even if he is a phoney, he is still the best coach in the NFL.

I share your opinion on Vinny, but by all appearances, plus the fact that he's "a Parcells Guy", Vinny's the guy for this year. Parcells has been really impressed by Henson so far, and so have I, just from watching him at practice. Drew's the QB of the future, but your guess is as good as mine as to when "the furutre" starts. Our offensive line is going to be utterly beast-like with the talent and depth this year, if that means anything. I'm hearing on dallascowboys.com radio right now that it had been insinuated earlier today or yesterday that the quality of our line this year meant that our QB wouldn't necessarily need to be super mobile.

I'm going to say I don't want Drew rushed along, but then I remember that Aikman was thrown into the fire right away, went 0-11 before he was yanked for the season, then went on to develop and win us 3 rings. Who knows?

Heh... today was the day the newspaper came out with the first of 5 Cowboys posters. Today's was Quincy Carter. Guess I can't get that one signed.

I remember in 2001, I went to camp the first day, and Tony Banks was there as the starter, signed my stuff. Day 2, I'm like, "where the heck is Banks?" and later find out he was released.

Listening to the press conference right now--JJ is super disappointed. Quincy was Jerry's guy. It was Jerry himself who drafted him because he was "intrigued" by his mobility.

Sounds like Parcells himself is stunned and truly saddened that he had to make this move...

Bryant may be next.

BTW I never thought much of Carter. Maybe the Patriots will trade them Rohan Davey, the NFLE Player of the Year?

From the Fox article...

This move comes on the heels of reviews claiming that Henson has been the best quarterback in camp thus far.

Dallas will be better off without Carter.

The reviews are as advertised. I agree that, eventually, we'll be better off. I hope that eventuality is sooner rather than later.

I don't care how good a rookie QB looks in practice, I still think that he should sit on the bench for at least a year before coming into the NFL.

I think it depends on two things: 1) The team's expectations for success; and 2) The ability of the OL to protect him.

btw, Being a rookie starter worked out pretty well for Marino.

Though I wasn't happy with Carter, I hope to hell that doesn't mean that Vinny will be the starter. As much as I hate to say it, let's see what Henson has, or doesn't have and go through another painful season of developing a QB.
Carter is a stupid arse if that cocaine story is true.&po'd&

True, it can work out. But with a guy like Henson, who hasn't even played football for a number of years, I think it would be a mistake to play him in his first season. I think it would be much more beneficial for him to sit and learn the offense.

He had every chance in the world to be the leader of the team and get the job done with his ability. Yet he failed in all aspects and now, his stupidity basically puts the Cowboys back a huge step. It's either Vinny, whose best years have passed him by, or throwing Henson or Romo to the wolves.

The Boy's OL is supposed to be better this year.

Starting worked out for Elway too.

I'm worried about Henson starting right away, not performing well, and consequently not being given the time he needs to develop. In the "Not For Long", win now NFL, everyone's on a short leash, and I don't think that can be done with developing QBs. Parcells is old school though and knows after bringing Simms and Bledsoe along that these things take time, so I doubt he'll be unnecessarily hasty in his judgment. After going 0-11, Aikman was benched and almost replaced permanently by Steve Walsh. What a huge mistake that would have been. In the interests of being good for a long, long time instead of just one year, I hope to see Henson get the time he needs to develop, because I think he can be "it." You look at him out on the field, and you know immediately he was fooling himself with the baseball thing. You look at him and you think, "Now THERE is a quarterback!"
