That was heard on SC. Only 27 years old. MAN... I always hoped JJ would go crazy and trade away one of our drafts for this guy. Texas people love him... my dad adores him... wow...

Where is pace? This makes things REALLY really interesting (read: crappy) for his Dolphins.

And we were baffled when Barry Sanders retired!

I'm not a Dolphins fan by any means, but I've always been a Ricky fan. I'm shocked. Devastated that I won't be seeing him do amazing things on the gridiron for years to come. Wow. :(

Link?

May be he is pissed about the pot thing. It's early, he could change his mind.

I sure hope so. It's breaking news on ESPN.com as we speak.

He's always had social anxiety disorder. He beat it, but maybe it's come back? At any rate, this is SHOCKING.

Ricky Williams: 'I'm retiring'

Fed up with football, Williams is retiring at 27

DAN LE BATARD

...

''I'm finally free,'' Williams said by cellphone from Hawaii. ``I can't remember ever being this happy.''

...

''I just don't want to be in this business anymore,'' said Williams, finished after just five NFL seasons. ``I was never strong enough to not play football, but I'm strong enough now. I've considered everything about this. Everyone has thrown every possible scenario at me about why I shouldn't do this, but they're in denial. I'm happy with my decision.''

...

He says he'll probably spend the upcoming football season traveling abroad -- he hasn't gone to Dolphin workouts in weeks -- but doesn't have a concrete plan for his future.

''I have no idea what I'm going to do,'' he said. ``Who knows? I just know it is going to be fun. Going to school again. Going to travel for the next six months. I'm half-way intelligent. I'll figure something out. I don't feel like I have to explain myself to anyone. All I end up doing anyway is giving rebuttals, and it is boring. I don't want to do it anymore. That's it. I don't want to do this anymore. If people really care about me, that would be enough for them.''

Personally, I don't care about the Fins, but, boy would I be hot if I did. Ricky's timing here could not be worse. They have no real options at this point. Even Eddie George is gone.

I just saw that. I'm stunned but also happy because it will help my Jets win the division-not that we didn't already own the Dolphins.

This is Shocking. I rarely see players retire at the peak of their best careers. Ricky Williams is one of the best rushers from college and became a huge star in the NFL rushing for 1000 yards or more the last 4 years.

I don't think he's a major bust like Ryan Leaf, Brian Bosworth, or Andre Ware.

Ricky Williams is a good player, but his career was very unusual. The Saints traded all of their draft picks for him and New Orleans was a nightmare for him. And in Miami, his career blossomed into one of the leagues best runners.

He's not a bust at all. Even in New Orleans he rushed for over 1000 2 out of his 3 years there (he rushed for 884 his rookie season). In 5 seasons, he rushed for 6,354 yards, for a 4.0 ypc average and 41 TD. I'd say his best season was 2002, his first with the Dolphins.

I did notice last season that it had become harder for him to go on those long runs, but I blame it on his line. You're not going to rush for an insane ypc average when your line is crap and doesn't open up holes for you. Last season, because of his 3.5 ypc average, it took him nearly 400 carries (the most rushing attempts in one season in his 5 seasons in the league) to rush for his 1200+ yards--getting that many carries has got to wear on a guy both mentally and physically. By comparison, rushing behind the blocking of guys like John Tait, Priest Holmes last year rushed for 1420 yards on 320 carries for a 4.4 ypc.

Leaf, Bosworth, Ware... shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Ricky. Not the same situation at all. As you've heard on TV, the better comparison is to Robert Smith, the Vikes RB who retired at age 28 to go to med school in the middle of a great career. LeBatard said last night that Ricky had been talking to Smith about this decision for awhile. Those other guys you mentioned just plain sucked--Ricky's going out as a guy who's been one of the premier rushers in the league since his arrival. He's one of the guys who actually lived up to his Heisman.

I'll miss ya, Ricky, but no further explanations are needed.

As a football fan, this really chaps my ass. How about giving your team more than a weeks worth of notice before training camp opens?

Here's some interesting news from Edgerrin James...

I'd knew James would want to go to Miami after all this.

Nothing comes before the almighty buck. I bet some what a refund and I don't blame them. Slimy.

Pretty sad that Ricky is retiring at such a young age. I hope this decision makes him happy. :(

It now appears that reefer was the main reason he retired.

I feel it's a very smart decision. He is set for life. He is rich, and he still has his health. He got out of the game before before it was too late and he became really injured.
