I sense it's going to happen. There's a lot of talk that RJ will be wearing a new uniform by tradig deadline. With the D'Backs nowhere near contention, I think it's a no-brainer.
I'd love to see him in pinstripes. We aren't built for the future, so I'd definitely trade some good prospects to get RJ and a better chance for the ring this year and perhaps next.
I heard on The FAN - I think it was Tony Page - that the Sox have offered Youkilis and prospects. I don't know how true this is, but something is brewing out there with some team.
Let's use this thread to express out thoughts, talk about the latest RJ rumors, and most importantly to create an energy to get RJ into pinstripes. :)

Let's disregard the BS that Jon Heyman is spewing that Randy Johnson hates Schilling so much, he wants to come to NY. Not one other reporter touched that with a 10 foot pole and the opposite has been reported.
I'm guessing Johnson stays right where he is.

"Rumor" has it, that he'd go east for the Yanks. I seem to be getting in trouble with rumors lately, but at least these rumors aren't harmful.

I've been taught a good lesson in another thread (as you know) not to believe some of these writers/media wh*res.
I think RJ would welcome a pennant race, be it NY or Boston. He and Curt on the Sox would scare me to death

Pedro/Schilling/RJ/Wakefield=Yankees ALCS loss. Theo needs to get RJ here if he is available, which I still don't think he is.
And as witnessed with the Schilling trade, I think Colangelo will lean towards making a trade with the Sox, so long as RJ wants to come here. Which is definatley questionable at this point in time.

Agreed, as long as the Red Sox make the ALCS.

They probably will w/o him. They almost definitely would with him. And with him, their likelihood of taking the division (which I still put at 15-25%) goes up significantly.

Beat the Yankees in the ALCS without Johnson (if they get there)? I would wager $50 to your favorite charity that they won't.

If the Sox ever got RJ, they would make the ALCS. I don't think there would be much doubt about that.
If we don't its a different story, although I still like our chances if we make the playoffs. Throwing Schilling/Pedro/Wakefield is still pretty potent considering how Wake usually fares VS NY.
If the deal goes down on or around July 31st the Sox could be out of the playoff race and RJ just might want to play on a team thats actually going to the playoffs...

Do you REALLY think that? What do you think the probability of that happening is? I would say very low.

Pretty high actually. I think TB will have overtaken Bos by the ASB and won't look back. I really doubt Bos will be in the playoffs this year. Francona doesn't have the mentality or skills to lead his team to post season play. He's got all the talent in the world, but has no clue what to do with it.
Just my opinion though - this IS supposed to be BOS year, right? Or was that LAST year? Or maybe the year before...aw, forget it. ;)

I didnt realize Francona hit with RISP. He has all the talent FINALLY. It's now the second game that the starting lineup has all been playing at the same time.
Let's make a bet then. I will even give you 2-1 odds since I'm a nice guy. You have Tampa and I have the Red Sox.

I'd go as high as 25-1 that the Sox finish ahead of the D'Rays DESPITE Francona.
I agree, ND, Terry doesn't hit with RISP, but he an awful leader of a team that blatently needs leadership. If anything is going to do talented Sox in, it will be because of this lack of leadership and absence of discipline to play fundamental baseball.
Quite honestly, I'm not sure if anyone can lead this team because the Boston front office is calling all the shots, a la the Yankees pre-Showalter.

And what might that charity be? The Newcastle Brown Ale Relief Fund? Hmmmm?
All kidding aside, please remember to count me in and we'll name our favorite charities.

I wanna see Tampa Bay get Randy Johnson. Seriously, they have the minor leauge talent and I would love to see Tampa Bay give Boston a run for their money for 2nd place
Just for the record, as of today Texas has a 2.5 game lead in the Wildcard race...

What I think:
-Boston will *probably* finish in front of the D-rays, but they will be in third at some point this season.
-There's no way in hell the Sox win the division. I mean, come on.
-No wildcard, either.
This team was overestimated all along IMHO.

I don't see Tampa Bay keeping this up so I don't think Boston's competition will be with Tampa. I do think they will have competition with the Rangers though (I believe the A's will win that division).

Tampa reminds me a lot of Toronto last year. They have a good month and everybody is willing to give them the world series.

The complete game was Johnson's third of the season and 38th of his career. Afterwards, he didn't want to talk about speculation that he might ask for a trade to a contender with the Diamondbacks rebuilding.
"I have no comment on that," he said. "Let's just enjoy the win."
Not exactly no, was it?

Since people like to throw far-fetched scenerios out there, let me throw one out that might actually make sense :)
Three team trade between Boston, Dodgers and D-Backs. Bit players may also have to be included but the core of the trade would be the Dodgers get Nomar, Boston gets RJ, D-backs get prospects from the Dodgers and maybe Sox. Boston has an infield of Mueller/Youks, at 3B, Pokey at short, Bellhorn at 2B, flavor of the day at 1B. Not the greatest defense, but what else is new with them this year. But now they would have a starting 5 of Pedro/Shill/RJ/Wake/Lowe, throwing Arroyo into the bullpen for some much needed long relief help.
For those of you who will turn and say that the Sox can't afford this, let me explain. Nomar would be gone at the end of the season anyways, so that frees up 11 million, Lowe is a goner, which saves another 5 mil, equaling RJ's salary for next year. Mendoza and Williamson will probably not resign, which saves around 6 million, not to mention saving 3-4 million with a Pedro extension, since i think 14 million will be enough to sign him. So next year, the Sox would have a starting lineup of Manny, Damon, Trot in the outfield, 'Tek at C, Ortiz at 1B, Mueller/Youks at 3B, Pokey at SS (he would have to be resigned, but not a major transaction), hole at 2B, and a starting rotation of Pedro/Shill/RJ/Wake/Arroyo (or another cheap F.A)
Dodgers get the offense they've wanted, since I think Nomar will thrive outside of Boston, and the D-backs get prospects to rebuild.
I think you guys are really underestimating the Sox team they are too good of a team, with too much talent to play like this till September. Do I think they will win the division? No, but anything oculd happen. Do Ithink they can win the wild card? I think they probably will.
I dont think, however, that Boston will get Randy Johnson, simply because during this time of his career, he wants to stay near the family, so he would either stay in Arizona, or go to Anaheim.New York may have a chance, I just read that we have the possibility of getting Moyer of Benson, but are holding up to see what happens with RJ. If it was a solid no, I dont think wed be wasting our time.

They had two crushing defeats in a row (7/1 vs. NYY, 7/2 vs. ATL) that would demoralize any team, no matter who they were. If they can pull their heads out of their @$$'s and play solid baseball, the pitching will do the rest. If they let themselves beat themselves, they are going home early this year

This trade actually makes sense for all involved, the only thing that would stop it is RJs no trade clause. I think he would already be gone if he didn't have that.

Google "yankees hyping prospects" pot meet kettle
Fossum is 2-6 Btw. DeLaRosa helped them get Richie Sexson.
RJ coming to sox or yankees i think brings them one step closer to the WS then anyone, because it brings in a money pitcher in the post season. I think he will waive the clause but the D-Backs want to get a ton more out of the deal, nearer the deadline then now.

Fossum wasn't exactly a "prospect" or "all hype." He had already pitched in the majors: >200IP, >30 starts, with some success, albeit inconsistency. I think most people knew his flaws as a starter -- only 2 pitches and a slight frame -- so it becomes an issue of whether you think those will limit him or he will overcome them, or if you want to use him as a reliever (what I'd probably do at this point, since I assume he has not developed the 3rd pitch to complement his fastball and curve).

Oh yes, Randy Johnson. The New York media thinks it's the Yankees' divine right to acquire him, but 1) Jerry Colangelo has to sell '05 tickets and as he starts to try to sign Richie Sexson, he needs to keep his Hall of Famer, especially considering what he's done this season with the perfect game and 4000th strikeout; and 2) Randy can go where he wants if he wants. He owns a house in Southern California and would have just as good a chance of going to the World Series if he pitched for the Angels or Dodgers as the Yankees. Problem is, when one of those teams called, the answer was that Randy Johnson isn't going anywhere.
