An ump actualy asked Valentine for an autograph after a game? I don't think that it's terribly unprofessional in ST, but I do question the guys taste.

ROUND TRIPPERS

By JON HEYMAN

The Reds, Angels and Rockies are talking about Ramiro Mendoza. While the Yankees question whether Mendoza ever will start for them, other teams see him in their rotation now . . . Some Yankees coaches prefer Darin Erstad's hard-nosed style, but some club execs think Jim Edmonds is much more talented .
---------------------------------------------
The Padres are talking about trading top catching prospect Ben Davis to Arizona for Travis Lee. Both their stars are falling, apparently .
---------------------------------------------
The Royals will hold onto Jose Rosado .
---------------------------------------------
The Expos have talked at different times to the Yankees, Mets, Rockies and Pirates about Rondell White, but Expos GM Jim Beattie said, "I don't see a way to trade Rondell and replace that bat in the lineup." .
---------------------------------------------
Reds GM Jim Bowden said Gookie Dawkins "has a chance to be in the category of Pokey Reese" and that Adam Dunn could be a cross between Dale Murphy and Jim Thome. "I'm glad I didn't put either player in the Griffey deal," Bowden concluded .
---------------------------------------------
Mark Wohlers is throwing well, according to Bowden, and could be ready by May .
---------------------------------------------
Some believe late nights caused Carlos Baerga's career to go into a rapid decline, and it's possible the same affliction has gotten Bobby Higginson, who hit .232 for the Tigers last year and started slowly in spring training before homering Thursday (although it's believed Higginson no longer dates exotic dancer Tawny Peaks) . . .
---------------------------------------------
If Wendell Magee can make it in centerfield, Detroit can move Juan Encarnacion to rightfield, where he's more comfortable, and move Higginson elsewhere .
---------------------------------------------
Everyone talks about how the NL Central is the division of Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. But what about Jeff Bagwell, who hit 30 of his 42 home runs away from the spacious Astrodome and might benefit from new Enron Field? Bagwell's 71 percent of home runs on the road is the highest for any player with more than 40 in a season .
---------------------------------------------
Folks say Eric Milton's curveball is much improved. "He might be better than [Brad] Radke," one exec said .
---------------------------------------------
Mets people say they're not even considering the possibility that Robin Ventura won't be able to throw by Opening Day. Considering Ventura's toughness, it's difficult to doubt him .
---------------------------------------------
There's no chance Darryl Hamilton opts for free agency Wednesday, as is his right. Apparently, he exercised his right to demand a trade only because a quirk in the rule allowed him to name six teams to which he cannot be traded. His list included Seattle (he did not want to go in a potential Griffey deal).
---------------------------------------------
New Expos owner Jeffrey Loria, a New Yorker, is willing to take a chance. The acquisition of Hideki Irabu may only be the start. They've talked about John Rocker for Ugueth Urbina (though they won't do that straight-up), and they even discussed Rickey Henderson briefly .
---------------------------------------------
Dodgers officials were enthusiastic about Carlos Perez' chances to regain his form after visiting him in the Dominican Republic this winter. But they're losing hope again after Perez' brutal performance in his first outing in which he barely touched 88 mph
---------------------------------------------
Let's hope baseball isn't really considering an alignment that would separate the Cubs and Cardinals. Bud Selig is smarter than that
---------------------------------------------
Umpires are supposed to be acting more professionally, but one collected Bobby Valentine's autograph after a recent game.
---------------------------------------------
It's not a sign of progress that the target date for the Mets' new park was pushed back in their media guide, from 2003 last year to 2004 this year.
