View Full Version : Greg Maddux is 11 wins shy of 300

Last year, they kept on saying that "we may never see another 300 game winner again". I was surprised to see that Maddux is pretty close to doing it. So is he going to get the same adulation that Clemens did if he does it next year?

I have been the biggest Maddux fan my entire life. He is a great pitcher that doesn't just blow people away. He knows how to pitch and can hit all of his spots. It would be a tragedy if he didn't get the same amount of attention that Clemens got especially because he isn't a power pitcher.

I also have always admired Maddux. He pitches with his head as
well as his arm. The fans in Atlanta don't seem to really
appreciate their team. There have been times that even
post season games weren't sold out. It's a shame, but I'd
be surprised if Maddux gets the recognition he deserves
when he gets #300. BTW - there was a standing joke a few
years ago that Moose was "Greg Maddux Lite". I love that.

Ah yes....Greg Maddux. :D

I hope he gets it next year, especially in a Braves uniform. He deserves alot of praise, considering he's more of a finess pitcher, and that he has always outsmarted the competition. Of course, someone will bring up his losing record in the postseason next year, but he's had some great games as well. Certainly one of the greatest of our generation.

With AOL-TW (or whatever they're now called) being ordered to cut payroll, I doubt he'd be re-signed as a Brave. I'm wondering who will eventually pick him up.

Unless he wins #300 as a Brave, I doubt he'd get much attention. Besides, do they have a YES network or anything, and some likely "Quest f/300" thing? That was a part of the fanfare also.

Some how I feel that the Braves will find a way to keep Greg who will then reward them with a great year while winning his 300th!!

So goes my theory -- milestones are passed / records fall in pairs (or threes) these days; it's never one guy who accomplishes something rare or unusual -- it's got to be at least two guys who do it simultaneously or only a few months apart. (i.e. Cone/Wells perfect game; Cammy/Green 4-homer game; Sosa/Mac passing Maris -- two years in a row; Boggs/Gwynn/Ripken 3,000 hits; Nomar/Tatis 2 grandslams in an inning -- the list goes on...) Kinda takes a bit off the magnanimy of the accomplishment.

That being said, I hope Maddux does it; he's always been recognized as a premiere pitcher, but he blows people away with his consistency rather than overpowering fastballs (even when he won those 4 Cy Young awards) -- doesn't strike a lot of guys out, rather than gets them to pop up to the infield on the first or second pitch. (I believe he threw a complete game at his height in only 78 pitches or something like that...) People tend to forget just how good he is -- and it's amazing; he's four years younger than Clemens and has been in the bigs two years less -- but he's won between 15 and 20 games every season (including the strike-shortened 1994 and 1995) since 1988! It's really surprising him being this close is not getting more attention; the media has been all over the Rocket's quest for 300, on the other hand, for the past two or three seasons.

The Braves do have TBS and Turner South, so if he stays in Atlanta, then there would be alot of coverage. I hope he can be resigned somehow...

I wish that the Braves would just find some way to re-sign Maddux just so he can get his 300th in a Braves uniform. He's been a Brave for most of his career and for him to get his 300th as a Brave would make it even more special.

He will get a large amount of attention for it, but I don't think as big a deal will be made simply because he is not the aggressive competitor that Clemens is. He's more soft-spoken and less controversial.

As for "the last one ever", that's ridiculous. There might only be one or two every twenty years, but there will probably always be a trickle. Look at Maddux: not a huge guy, not a flamethrower, has played his whole career in the "modern" era of baseball...and he's going to get there. Others will in the future as well.
