Montreal pitcher struggles during medical exam
JUPITER, Florida (AP) -- Pitcher Hideki Irabu, traded from the New York Yankees to the Montreal Expos in the offseason, had a MRI on his right elbow Saturday.
"It's a precautionary measure," Expos general manager Jim Beattie said.
During an exam Friday, doctors saw that Irabu wasn't able to complete all the prescribed exercises. After examining the elbow more closely, they found "some anomalies," said Beattie.
The Japanese starter had the MRI taken at the Jupiter Medical Center.
Beattie said Irabu had done his normal pitching routine in recent days and had not complained of any pain.
"We're not worried," said Beattie. "But we want to know exactly what it is."
The Expos acquired Irabu (11-7, 4.84 ERA last year) from the Yankees in December for minor league pitcher Jake Westbrook and two players who have yet to be named.
"In the spring, they always find a lot wrong with the bodies," manager Felipe Alou said. "Last year, I had some pain in the left side of my chest, I went to a doctor and I'm still here. It's all just wear and tear from the battlefield."

Hopefully everything will turn out well for Irabu. He gave us some good games while he was with the Yanks.
