I was fortunate to have a seat right behind home plate in the old yankee stadium for the first game of the 1963 Worl Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers when Koufax struck out 15 of my beloved yankees. I believed he got the Mick a couple of times and Maris a couple. He was throwing "Aspirins on that day. Best left handed pitcher I ever saw

I believe it. I love his wind up - a big balanced windmill!

Koufax was a jekyll and hyde guy. He spent 12 years in the majors. During his first 6 years he was considered wild with control problems. He settled down to become the most dominate pitcher in the 60s. I mean check out his ERA and strikeouts/walks ratio. Unbelievable.

The 1963 series was one biggest lowlights in Yankees history. We got wacked 4 to 0 with Koufax winning Game 1 and Game 4. He beat the great Whitey Ford. http://www.Bronx-Bombers.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

He should have been a Yankee. http://www.Bronx-Bombers.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Koufax for a 6 year period may be the best ever!
The series of 63 was a strange one. Although the Bombers got swept that year they wer'nt exactly manhandled. The BA of the teams were.

Dodgers: 214
Yanks 171 (uggh)

The era's
Dodgers: 1.00 ( Please! how the hell are you going to beat these guys!)
Yanks: 2.91
Yanks lost the first 2 games 5-2 4-1
But the next games were classics.
Jim Bouton pitched his tail off only to lose to the great Don Drysdale (now there was a bad motherf'er) 1-0
The last game was the famous Pepitone losing Boyer's throw in the shirts in the crowd on a routine ground ball. It put the go ahead run on 3rd. Yanks lose 2-1.
That series is the 1st one I remember clearly. I was 11. I, like my Dad and brothers were shocked they lost. Pitching, Pitching, Pitching!
Thats what puts rings on your fingers

I know a guy who moved into Sandy's house in Brooklyn after Sandy moved away. He showed me Sandy's draft card which was delivered there. I told him he should mail it to him. Think he might get arrested for opening Sandy's mail?

Koufax joined the Dodgers in 1955 @ the age of 19. He was only 31 when he retired with his elbow problem. Can you imagine the records he would have set had he had a career like Nolan Ryan. 5,000 strikeouts? Try 6,000+ And who knows about ERA, shutouts, no hitters etc. He was incredible.
