View Full Version : Pedro to miss Yankees following ASG
From bigleaguers.com (http://bigleaguers.yahoo.com/mlb/players/4875/news):
Jul 9: The Providence Journal's Sean McAdam reports Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez will not face the New York Yankees when the two teams meet in a July 25-27 three-game series. Red Sox manager Grady Little intends to have Martinez make his first start of the second half on July 19, against the Toronto Blue Jays. That would have Martinez set to pitch again on July 24.
I guess he's doesn't want another loss or no decision...

You nailed it.
Apparently, this was also to accommodate Pedro's travel plans for the AS break. My question is what's more important? An extra half day in the DR or beating the team that's just ahead of you in your division?
Pedro's cuff's answer to this question is in YD, and I think he summed it up very nicely. Link to post below.

They aren't. I've been lurking on a few boards, and no one can understand this move by Grady. Sox fans pretty upset a loser like Burkett may go instead of Pedro.
Torre, on the other hands, is having Mussina and Pettitte face the Sox.

He hit twice, they got conquered, Sori and Jete are back, w/Bernie thrown in fer good luck!!!
Pedro neither defeated us physically nor mentally, and we're still on top, so he's wussed out!!!
And they say Roger dodges his turns...
It's grady who is forcing pedro to sit. Pedro wants to go. Grady's an idiot.

And what do you think Yankee fans explain to everyone when Roger is accused of dodging a start? It's usually Torre that does it, if not always..
but do you ever take that as an explanation? Nope.. Roger the Dodger they call him.

Pedro wants to go home to the DR as well. Grady said that this was to accommodate that fact and not have to pitch the very next day after his return. So, I ask again, why not come back a day earlier?

Good question. It's not like he doesn't have six months off every year to visit family. Coming back a day early seems like a very small sacrifice to make, when you consider his team is playing their archrivals, whom they currently trail in the standings by a scant 3 games.

I'd be livid over this if I were a Sox fan. It's unbelievble that he wouldn't be back to face us after the AS Game. You'd think beating us would be his first priority.

Thank you for posting this link. I hadn't read that thread and I was curious to get a Red Sox fans take on the situation. I couldn't agree more with Pedro's Cuff. :)

Pedro and Grady give in to public pressure...
I knew they would give in -- it was just too selfish for words. Good. Now the Yanks gotta beat them again. :)
