I haven't been to a Ranger game nor really followed hockey for quite a while, so when my brother-in-law offered me two free tickets to last Sunday night's Ranger game against Minnesota, I joyfully accepted -- and took my older daughter with me. What's with the black uniforms, huh? For some reason, I just couldn't picture them as the NY Rangers that I knew and loved. From what I could judge from the fans in the seats, most of them who wore Ranger jerseys wore the traditional blue with red and white, with "RANGERS" diagonally down the front.
Will somebody bring me up to date? What did I miss???

Are you talking about the jerseys with the Statue of Liberty on it. I mean, I don't even recognize it when I see it. Just gimme the old fashioned Rangers gear, das it.
I agree! I hate"Alternate" uniforms- in baseball especially!
Thank G-d the Yankees wear only two unis.
Have you seen those yellow alternate uniforms the Bruins wear with the bear head? Weird!

Ook, Danmel, those bear heads are gruesome!! The only alternate uni's I like are the Penguins, but that's because their alternate is their old "skating penguin" logo, which they never should have gotten rid of in the first place.

How about those godawful Islander uniforms they used for a year or two, with the picture of the Gorton's fish stick guy on it....Didn't Ranger fans throw fishsticks on the ice when the Isles were in the garden and chant "we want fish sticks"?? :barf: :barf:

New Yorkers have one heck of a sense of humor!

Yeah, it was the uniforms with the Statue of Liberty on it. I think that the Rangers succombed to the popularity of black as a fashion statement with the urban youth. Wasn't that also the reason the Mets went with black in their uniforms?
If the Yanks ever did that, the true, loyal fans would scream bloody murder. Thank goodness the Yankee organization realizes that tradition is an integral and prominant part of the team's appeal with their fans!

I was trying to be nice to my friends the Islanders fans and not mention the Gorton's fisherman!
I don't remember ever throwing fish sticks (btw, who would think to bring a box of fish sticks to a hockey game?), but I did chant "we want fish sticks"! Sorry, guys!
Well, ALly- it's better than beat your wife Potvin!
Actually, I am a Ranger fan (don't tell my son) but we go to Islander games because we can get tickets and we live nearby and with two kids, the fewer hassles the better (that of course doesn't apply to that monstrosity in Flushing) The Islanders are so pathetic that I end up rooting for them just because I feel sorry for them! It's not like they're competing for that final playoff spot!!!!
Those fisherman unis were pretty awful! Are the Rangers Liberty unis black or just a dark, dark blue?

They're horrendous. It'slike the Statue of Liberty with NYR over her head. When they first came out I thought it was a team that played on rollerblades or something, didn't even THINK it was about the Rangers. But I don't see them wearing them at home games - is that their away outfit or something?

I have actually had the unpleasant experience of seeing the Rangers wear the Statue of Liberty uni's at the Garden! I think they're dark blue, but one way or the other, they are ugly! The traditional ones look so clean and so classy, and again, just because I'm superstitious, and so are most athletes, I wondered (the same as I did with the Pens) why they would change the uniform they had when they won the Cup?
Oh well! On the other hand, they played well last night, and kudos to my little Mikey Richter for becoming the Rangers' all-time winningest goalie! :)
They add those 'alternate" uniforms as a way of selling more merchandise-More designs. more sales!

Thank God the Yanks will never change their uniforms. Remember that stunt last year where all the teams created 'futuristic' uni's? I think the Yanks, ChiSox, and Cubs were the ones who said they would never change.
THOSE uniforms are horrendous, we are playing better, got to get into the playoff's, MIKE RICHTER IS THE MAN!

The black in uniforms is to sell to urban youth or gang members which ever you prefer. The black uniforms the Mets wear are the ugliest uniforms in baseball and a total sellout of the team's history. When Mike Keenan was introduced as Ranger's coach in '93 he wore a black New York Rangers jacket.UGLY! The Jets do the same thing. Inner city kids set the fashion for the rest of the country and they seem to prefer black in the logos or team designs. It's a money grab by teams. Thank God the Yankees haven't given in to this bull.................
