Younger Stottlemyer retires (http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1030/1453184.html)
maybe his dad will help him become a pitching coach... the yanks want to get younger - they could trade in mel for todd :) j/k

Todd Stott (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=4185) only had 5 games f/Snakes in '02, so that might be a reasonably indication. I think he'd thrown his glove against the dugout after he'd messed up in a start he'd really wanted to do well in.
Very sad, as he was the starting pitching f/TEX in the '98 LDS (http://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1998_ALDS2.shtml), so he and Mel had dinner together before the game.
I wish him well, and was rooting that he'd have been better after the surgery or whatever he'd had.

After this year's performance by the pitching staff...I'd say, thanks for the great run, Mel... but don't let the door hit you on the way out!

pssst....read the subject line to my post....
I said that "I got excited cause I "thought" it was his dad who retired"
meaning...I found out immediately that it was Todd...his son instead.
:)
so...you are mistaken in thinking that I misunderstood the original post...how funny is that?
fun stuff...none the less.

Hey, ya know what? When Mel retires, it might not be a bad idea to offer the job to Todd.
He's a pitcher and should know what's going on. And if he has no idea what the hell he's doing, he can just ask his dad.
It'll be like keeping Mel around but letting him think he's retiring.

I am not shocked by the news in the least, but it is sad to see a player leave the game due to injury. :( Best of luck to him in the future. :)
