A big loss for the 2012 team after winning the gold medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Chris Bosh is also questionable for the 2012 Olympics too.

With Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose and Chris Bosh injured, I think this will be the U.S. team that is going to London 2012.

Starting Five
C: Tyson Chandler
PF: LeBron James
SF: Kevin Durant
SG: Kobe Bryant
PG: Chris Paul

Bench
Backup C: Kevin Love
Backup Fs: Anthony Davis, Blake Griffin, Carmelo Anthony
Backup Gs: Deron Williams, Andre Iguodala and Russell Westbrook

Tough choice between Iguodala, James Harden and Eric Gordon for me at guard behind Kobe, CP3, D-Will and Westbrook, but I like Iguodala's defense.

As for forwards, Lamar Odom was a key player in the 2010 team, but he hasn't had a season to convince Jerry Colangelo and Coach K that he should be on the team.

Rather take Aldridge over Griffin. His game translates to FIBA much better then Griffin, who has no post game, no jump shot and cant hit FT's.

The only power forward I can see that can replace Blake Griffin is Josh Smith.

But like Griffin, Smith can't shoot free throws.

After looking at those 16 finalists, these are my final picks for Jerry Colangelo and Coach K.

Starting Five
C: Kevin Love
PF: Lebron James
SF: Kevin Durant
SG: Kobe Bryant
PG: Chris Paul

Bench: Deron Williams, Anthony Davis, Andre Iguodala, Rudy Gay, Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony, Russell Westbrook.

Why? I chose Anthony Davis and Andre Iguodala for their defense especially on the perimeter. Russell Westbrook for his hustle and energy and has international experience. Deron Williams and Carmelo Anthony from the Redeem Team. Tyson Chandler is needed for size and the injuries to the likes of Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh.

Very tough choice between Rudy Gay, James Harden and Eric Gordon and I can live with either one of the three on the team.

I left out Blake Griffin because despite being 6'10" and can rebound, he's needs to improve his free throw shooting, jumpers, 1 v. 1 game and his defense. He's only 23 and has lots of time to play for the U.S. team down the road. Unless I see Davis's sprained ankle worsen, Griffin is left out.

dabomb2045

I agree with your roster and lineups. Definetly agree w/leaving Griffin off the team. Anthony Davis can help the team more. We need a shot blocking defensive presence down low.

With Anthony Davis's wingspan, the U.S. has that. Blake Griffin is still very green.

Like I said, the only tough choice I had is between Rudy Gay, Eric Gordon and James Harden. Gay and Gordon were very good in the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey and can shoot. Harden can flat out shoot as well despite having no experience in the senior U.S. squad.

Guards
Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers

Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers
Andre Iguodala, Philadelphia 76ers
LeBron James, Miami Heat
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves

Center
Tyson Chandler, New York Knicks

After looking at that roster, here are my pros and cons for this team going to London 2012.

Pros: Speed, players who can play multiple positions (i.e. LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala) and shooters coming off the bench like James Harden.

Cons: Egos, overconfidence and Blake Griffin's game outside of his explosive athleticism to the rim.

My keys for the U.S. men: check egos and overconfidence at the door and Griffin needs to shoot 70% from the line and have balance on field goals.

http://espn.go.com/olympics/summer/2012/basketball/story/_/id/8175240/kobe-bryant-calls-david-stern-olympic-age-limit-concept-stupid-idea

I totally disagree with David Stern's idea of using U-23 teams for future Olympic Basketball tournaments.

Every NBA player who has a dream of representing their country in the Olympics should go.

I didn't see Kobe having an Olympic hangover when he won a gold medal with the 'Redeem Team' in Beijing and winning a NBA title in the 2008-09 season.

Assuming Stern requests an age limit on the Olympic basketball tournament like soccer and the U.S. fails to adapt to that system and win gold medals, then Stern will be calling back for their best pro players to compete in the Olympics again.

Memo to David J. Stern: KEEP IT THE WAY IT IS!

A good start for the U.S. men's team with a 98-71 victory over France despite France trailing 22-21 after the first quarter.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant had 22 points and 9 rebounds including 7/7 from the free-throw line as the Americans shot 73.7% from the charity stripe.

The U.S. defense also neutralized France as the French shot 39.4% from the field including 2/22 from 3-point land.

San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker had 10 points, but only one assist and had four of France's 18 turnovers.

Had nothing to do with the opponent. The shooting as a team was impressive if that was a scrimmage.

But if you want to call out Nigeria, most of their players are either born in America and/or played college basketball in America. They also took down both Greece and the Dominican Republic in qualifying earlier in the month. We're not talking about 1992 Angola here.

The US just put on one, if not the most, ridiculous shooting performances I've ever seen.

Right, you had to see the game to get a real sense of the shooting clinic they put on today. I started watching it at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and I'm glad I did so.

Yeah, I've never seen a shooting performance like that in my life...at any level of basketball. Just incredible.

I'm annoyed at hearing this "we ran up the score" stuff....what nonsense. Kobe and LeBron didnt play in the second half. Melo was taken out in the 3rd. They basically played a passive zone defense the 2nd half, and Coach K didnt allow fastbreaks in the 4th quarter. None of the PG's tried to drive and penetrate from midway 3rd thru the rest of the game. It was just pass the ball around the perimeter and someone take a long jumper. They just made almost every shot they took. Short of holding on to the ball and letting the shot clock run out every possession, I am not sure what people wanted them to do.

For sure, and then there was the swing the ball around the perimeter and just keep bombing threes - they were on a 2 for 19 streak from downtown in the 3rd quarter, I believe, and doing nothing legitimate to establish the paint with the perimeter ice freaking cold. When they started getting the ball to Melo on the block, they started scoring again, and then LeBron finished it off by just owning the paint on drives.

Liz Cambage gave the Aussies hope with 19 points and had a 56-55 lead at one point for the Opals in the second half.

But Lindsay Whalen came into the ballgame and scored six vital points in the second.

Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles each scored 14 points and Sue Bird added 13.

The U.S. Men's team defeated Argentina 103-89.

Kevin Durant led all players with 19 points. LeBron James added 18 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

Meanwhile, Spain had to rally to defeat Russia 67-59.

Russia led 31-20 at halftime, but Pau Gasol didn't let Spain lose. Pau had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

With that said, I expect a tough game on Sunday. Spain's size could hurt us especially if Chandler gets into foul trouble.

I also think the guard play, shooting will be key especially long range and the free throw line and composure.

Not only the U.S. has to deal with the Gasol brothers, Pau and Marc and Serge Ibaka, they also have to deal with their guards including long-range shooting threat Jose Calderon, Juan Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez.

Calderon can shoot from outside, but those three of Calderon, Navarro and Fernandez struggled against Russia in the semifinals shooting a combined 34%. That doesn't look promising with the U.S. depth at guard led by Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Deron Williams and also the bigs who can shoot from the outside like Kevin Durant and Kevin Love.

But if the U.S. have defensive lapses especially on backdoor plays, Spain can take advantage.

Also, the United States' men have to show their mental stability and grit like they did with the likes of Lithuania and Argentina 2X. They can't have an off-night in the Gold Medal Game.

Like you said Mike, the U.S. team is like Usain Bolt. Once they hit top gear, they never look back and they close out very strong especially LeBron James who can cap off his 2012 with another magnificent performance on Sunday like he has been all tournament long.

But Spain, even though they're not playing well all tournament long, they can challenge the U.S.

I thought the refs were generally ok in the 2nd half, after a horrific 1st half

They stopped Navarro, and that made the difference defensively (even though Gasol had a big half)

However, USA had about 15 easy opportunities to blow it open with about 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter, and seemed to miss all of them (2 big Melo 3's, and one easy Paul-Lebron fastbreak that they both blew somehow are the biggest ones i remember), so really they kept them in it after that

In my mind, I think one of, if not, the major reason why the United States men have won the last three major tournaments (2008, 2012 Olympic Gold Medals and 2010 FIBA World Championship) is their poise and maturity. When Spain was barnstorming and even took a lead in both Beijing and London, the U.S. withstood the barrage and kept their composure.

Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski, left his mark as a Team USA Men's Basketball coach that added the unity and maturity aspect to the team when they had their slump between 2002-2004.

It will be very tough for Jerry Colangelo to find a successor for Coach K.

That 1st half was a joke with the officiating. Luckily they eased off the whistles in the 2nd half and allowed the game to get into a nice flow. Spain's tough...not surprising to see Pau give us issues and their guards play way above their heads against us all the time. Navarro just murders us every game.

We made the plays down the stretch. CP3, LeBron and Durant were huge in the 4th. Real strong game for Love too with the offensive boards and garbage points. CP3's ball pressure on Navarro in the 2nd half was big as well.

After dissapointments and poorly built teams in 2002 and 04...its nice to have a program that does it the right way now and its nice to see players that care and want to rep the US well. Should be interesting to see who the next coach will be.
