My guess is that Joe is giving Matsui the day game after the night game off, given his knees. Otherwise, I'd rather have the lefty starting over Nady. Regardless, I don't like Nady at cleanup.

Looks like AJ is going to need to spin a gem with this lineup.....
I think he may be used to it though considering the teams he's played for in the past.

Come on AJ... Go get 'em!!!!

This lineup makes me confused. Gardner batting between Ransom and Molina? Nady hitting cleanup?

That said -- I'm amped for Mr. Burnett to be out there on the mound and salvage the series. I think he's got this one.

EDIT: Just saw who the O's have catching today; made me a little sad to realize he's not in our organization anymore.

It's hard to imagine a season starting worse for a starting rotation over 2 games than the Yankees' has. Consecutive abysmal performances by CC Sabathia and Chien-Ming Wang have put the team in at least a 6-1 hole before the 5th inning ended in each game. Overall, the duo completed just 8 innings over 2 starts and was hammered for 17 hits, 13 ER, 8 walks and not a single strikeout.

Today it'll be RH A.J. Burnett's NYY debut. Burnett made a career-high 34 starts for Toronto last season and also set a high for IP with 221.1. He pitched to a 4.07 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP, boasting most impressive rates of 9.4 K/9 and 2.69 K:BB rate.

Last season the Orioles pummeled Burnett to the tune of a 9.82 ERA over 3 starts. Spanning just 14.2 IP, Burnett was tagged for 23 hits with 7 walks and 19 strikeouts.
Starting for the Orioles will be 28-year old RH Alfredo Simon, who pitched just 13 innings at the MLB level in 2008 and was batted around for 16 hits and 9 ER. In the Minor Leagues, Simon threw 85.2 IP with a 2.94, allowing 75 hits and 22 walks (2.3/9) against 66 strikeouts (6.9/9). He had a 1.13 WHIP.

Simon has not faced any of the NYY hitters.

I don't understand the logic of using a low OBP righty to bat cleanup against a hard-throwing RHP with poor control

If anything, it should be Posada or Swisher

Yeah Nady in the 4 spot is weird. Why not just bat Cano third and move Tex to the clean-up spot, or just DH Posada and sit Nady? Crazyness.

Thankfully Burnnett is going to stifle the O's completely today, and we'll only need a run or two to win it.

djeter220

Considering the messes that were the previous two games I'm feeling oddly confident for today's game. Jeter stole a base and hit a bomb, Cano is looking like his troubles are over at the plate, Tex broke the seal, Swish seems like he's ready to prove himself when he gets his opportunies. All we need is AJ to get us on track (he's the only one so far that pitched in the AL East regularly last year, that could be good or bad) and I think the panic can end.

Ah, I won't be around for the game, going to a BBQ for a friends birthday (have to take advantage of this New York weather). I will be keeping up with the game, whether it is watching it at my friends or the pocket radio I will be bringing.

With that said, Let's Go Yankees! The lineup is different, hopefully that helps our cause, and hopefully Burnett can stop this early bleeding we have on our hands.

Enjoy the game, everyone!

Thanks for the write-up TBT!

We have to keep in mind that it is a long season, and that resting matsui's knees at some points will be better for the team.

I think batting Nady clean-up is more telling of a "Who else to put?" scenario. I dont think Joe wants to reward Cano immediately after a hot two days and Swisher still has to prove that he is out of last year's slump to bat higher in the order.

The defense however will be very good for the game. This is the team's best defensive outfield and we really just have to rely on the Captain's defense and Ransom for the lack of a better option.

Cant wait for the game to start and hopefully AJ will start his NYY career with a big W.

Gardner batting in front of Molina makes perfect sense. If Gardner & Molina somehow manage to both get on which one do you want being the lead runner? Molina is station to station, Gardner is going to take the extra base and be a base stealing threat.

So basically, they were crappy against 75% of pitching.

Disagree.

Posada cannot catch, but can DH

Damon or Swisher batting third certainly worth a try
If you are going to take out Matsui and Posada out of the lineup we need more offense, ergo Swisher for Gardner.

Funny...I thought it'd take AT LEAST a week for the Girardi critics to begin their second guessing... there I go again with my overly optimistic outlook on...well, everything.

The lineup is what it is- guys need days off- Matsui looks lost and it's way too early to ask Jorge to catch a day game following a night game. This is what they call "stirring the pot." If this configuration works, Joe looks like a genius, if Burnett throws 7 innings of 3 run ball and we lose 3-1, the bashers, critics, and naysayers will be out in full force by dinner time.

While this is true, there is a good chance he'll be hitting for Molina later on if the game is close. If he's the DH, Girardi can't hit/run for Molina without losing the DH spot.

As for Swisher or Damon in CF, that's an experiment we won't see unless both Gardner and Melky fail horribly and 2 games is far too small a sample to say Gardner has fialed and Melky has yet to get an AB so hard to say he's failed. Though I know some Melky bashers will say he's failed the last 3 years.

Giving Matsui a rest is fine IF he needs it. Nobody argued with that.

You didn't read my post closely, otherwise you wouldn't be saying that anyone wanted Posada to catch.

Actually regardless of the outcome tonight, this lineup is not optimal.

Criticizing a bad decision by a manager doesn't mean we are "bashing" him or are "naysayers". No?

Good argument. I only brought out the Swisher for Gardner idea because he is sitting Posada AND Matsui, that's a LOT of offense. Any lineup where Nady is hitting cleanup for the Yankees is weak.

Our two losses so far had everything to do with starting pitching and not offense. We have scored an average of five runs and 10 hits per game. Count me in favor of minimum experimentation with the lineup.

Nady takes a seat.

Its funny, my buddy and I were talking yesterday; I know Nady played over his skis in the second half last year, but over the course of his career he's hovered right around average. Unless he returns to late last year form, we're only losing the average guy that he's been over the rest of his career when we sit him down.

But as I've posted before, I think its time for Matsui to sit down on a regular basis. Matsui as a DH / cleanup hitter is a joke. He hit 31 HRs in 2004, but other than that he's only broken 20 twice. Just not a clean up guy, and I'd hate to see Joe act with the typical Yankees Loyalty, to a fault.
