two great games should result in a fantastic final of UNC vs UConn

The final should be UNC-UConn. The two best teams in the country IMO.

If UConn and Nova both win, I'll win a $1000 in my survivor pool.

I feel pretty good about UConn, but it's going to take a tremendous effort from Villanova to win. As dabomb has been saying all season, if UNC plays well, they won't lose. Just have to hope Villanova can stay with them for 35 minutes, and try and control the ball towards the end.

as much as i hate tv timeouts (especially these longer ncaa tourney ones), they're a big help to the huskies. playing only 7 deep doesn't matter as much because of them.

Oh I don't disagree with that, but I think because of that, even the slightest tap has led to a foul called. A lot of them are surely fouls, but I've seen a few that I disagree with.

BroadwayBomber55
04-04-09, 06:10 PM
UConn needs to take care of the basketball better and continue dominating the paint.

For Michigan State, they need to knockdown some more perimeter shots and draw more fouls for their free throws.

roblyo33
04-04-09, 06:14 PM
I think UConn has to pick up the pace a bit. They score pretty well in transition and their big men run pretty well. I see them running more in the second half. Once again, Izzo has done a good job preparing his team.

we have no perimeter threat whatsoever when AJ isn't shooting well. Austrie has sucked the majority of the season. And Kemba is a lot like Lawson was before this season. Next year probably won't be any different as none of our recruits are good from outside.

There is a reason why they play the games. MSU is playing good ball and they're gonna have probably 62 of the 72,000 people in the building on Monday on their side.

I definetly have concerns about that game...and am not taking anything for granted. I have respect for Izzo's gameplanning--if UNC wins they will earn it...it wont be an easy game at all. The game played in December means nothing...early season game and both teams arent the same they were back then.

Michigan State will face another #1 seed. This time for the National Championship against North Carolina.

The Arizona Wildcats are the only team in NCAA Tournament history to beat three #1 seeds in one tournament to win the National title. Lute Olsen accomplished this feat as a #4 seed in 1997 defeating Kansas in the Sweet 16, North Carolina in the National Semifinals, and Kentucky in the National Championship Game.

Can Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans do the same Monday night?

So glad that this core went out on top. And arguably the 2009 Tar Heels were dominant throughout the whole tournament.

All of their wins were by 12+ points.

Only LSU gave them a fight, but that's about it.

Their defense got better late in the season and they showed how suffocating they were during the tournament.

Well at least we can say w/Roy this time that he won with his recruits. 2005 he had Felton, McCants, May, Jawad Williams...Marvin Williams as the 6th man was his only guy...the rest were Doherty's recruits. But this class was all him. The seniors of Green, Hansbrough, Frasor etc....juniors with Lawson/Ellington.

Whats scary is that this team is gonna be real good again next season. Hansbrough and Green graduate--I fully expect Lawson to leave--I would say Ellington is prob 60/40 that he leaves but I hold out hope he returns. But they have Thompson back, Graves (who was lost for the year in January) back, Davis (who had his best game of the year last night) back, Zeller back--a guy who would have had a bigger impact this year w/o breaking his wrist, I expect much more from Drew next year now that he'll have a bigger role, and they'll have Ginyard back as a 5th year senior on a medical redshirt. They also have arguably the #1 recruiting class in the country coming in next year.

I've been critical of Roy at times too. But he's already won as many titles as Dean Smith has. So he's doing something right.

I wonder what the primary knock against Roy will be from ABCers now that Roy won with his own recruits. There were already comments on the Duke board that "he didn't really recruit Hans" and that "he can't do it without cheating" and "he can't do it without paying his players to come back." Some funny stuff.

Ellington is projected as a late first rounder (at least the last time I checked) and he just won the title. He's gone for sure. I do agree though, UNC should have a strong team again next year.

Where is this evidence that he "cheated"? Friggin Duke fans...they might even be bigger crybabies then Sox fans.

I'm intrigued to see what Ellington does. He could have some issues in the NBA cuz of his size--he's a tweener. Undersized to play the SG, but not really good enough ball handling/passing skills to be a PG. I'm thinking if he is still projected to a late 1st rounder...he might decide to come back for his senior year and try to improve his game even more.

Either way, we're gonna be real good next year again. Between the returning players--and the incoming class. They already have two five-star guys signed (Henson and Strickland), and three four-star guys (McDonald and the Wear twins). Rumor has it that they are going after John Wall now...who was I believe gonna sign w/Memphis until Calipari left. If they land Wall, its one of the best incoming classes in UNC history. Even without him, its the best class in 2009 along side Memphis.

Btw, I hope Davis doesnt change his mind--alot of stuff I've been hearing today is that if he does come out, he might be a Top 5 pick. He stays he's staying....just hope he doesnt have a change of heart. If he's smart, he'll stay. He's gonna be one of the main guys next year---he needs to get stronger and work on his low post game more. I expect him to have a great year next season.

The "consensus" mock on that draft site (which I assume is the average of all the mocks people run on that site) have Lawson #16 to the Bulls, Hansbrough #17 to Philly and Ellington #32 to the Wizards. Green #58 to Boston.

If Ellington is in that area late 1st round-early 2nd round....I think he should come back. With him back, he'll be apart of a team that can repeat and he'll have one more year to work on his game to make it NBA ready.

After seeing the way that UNC played this whole tournament, I'm not too upset that UConn lost to Michigan State. UConn was not going to beat UNC anyway. In fact, they probably would have gotten embarrassed off the floor.

Congrats to UNC! Without a doubt the best team in college basketball this year.

I just watched the UConn women win the title tonight. Talk about anti-climactic. They were so above their competition this year that every game was boring.

I'm not sure I heard correctly but, I think ESPN said that the UConn women trailed, in the second half of a game, for only one possession all season long. If true, that's preety damn amazing. That team was spectacular.

He is beyond gone and he deserves it, I'm glad for him. He was one of the more fiery players on the team and underrated as well. Finally reached his potential or at least close to it.

And, a belated I told ya so. :P I know that you had your reservations about this core choking in big games but they sure came thru. Ironically enough, it seemed that once the tourney started you became more confident in this team than I was.

Edit: Apparently, I should read the rest of the thread before I post, my fellow tarheel diehard......you are up to date with everything going on in the land of the heels. But, Davis is coming back......good move on his part. And, there are some wild Wall rumors out there but I refuse to believe anything until it gets done and I don't think it will get done. It would be an embarrassment of riches if we got him.

If he does leave, I wont be upset. He contributed to my team winning a title...so he will always be special to me and I will always root for him in the NBA. But for his own sake, I think if he's projected as a late 1st rounder/high 2nd...he should come back. Use the last year to improve his game even more, maybe be apart of another title team, and improve his draft status for 2010.

And feel free to tell me "I told ya so". I did doubt this team at times and was critical of them. Mainly cuz there were times where I felt they played below their abilities and were capable of much more....times where the effort wasnt there, times where I think they tried to just skate by on ability and were outworked by other teams. Games like the GTown and Kansas game where they couldnt seem to handle the moment and got ran over. But they were able to overcome all of that this year. I have to say, I became very confident after the 2nd Duke win. Just the way we played that day....the intensity and focus the team had...the way they executed on offense and played hard on defense....I never saw them play that way for a full 40 minutes. So I began to say to myself "maybe its finally time for this team to take the next step". And thats exactly what happened. The stretch of 6 games in this tournament? Easily the best stretch of games this team's played. Fully focused...didnt slack of at all...a full 40 minute effort in every game...good execution...great effort on defense. They outworked their opponent in every game. When you combine all that w/their talent level...you get a team thats nearly unbeatable...which is what happened here. Other then the LSU game, we had teams beaten by halftime. They just dominated the opposition. This team played up to their abilities and showed how great they were...I asked for it for 3 years w/this core and I'm glad I finally got to see it :D . They are well deserved champs and will go down as one of the best UNC teams ever.

As for Wall, I'd be surprised if we got him. But you never know...maybe Roy will go all out now and use the allure of a) 2 titles in 5 years and b) joining a great recruiting class. If we got him, 2009 becomes one of the best classes in UNC history. Even if we dont, its still a great class and its ranked #1 by most people (Memphis was #1 but now they lost Cousins to UK and now Dennis is asking for his release). Very glad Davis is coming back. I felt that Roy kinda "hid" him this year--i.e. he could have used Davis more, but he knew the team could win with using him in spurts and limiting his minutes--which would also allow his numbers to be kept down and make him "less attractive" to NBA scouts. He didnt want Davis to be a one and done guy..and he could afford to limit him w/o hurting the team. I really think that was Roy's plan. If it was, it worked...directly or indirectly. I think Davis will have a great year in 2010. I see him averaging around 17-18 pts, 10 boards, 2-3 blocks...he will bulk up and will have an improved low post game. Between the returning talent and the incoming class...we'll easily be a Top 10 team and will contend for a title IMO.

Roy continues to do an amazing job recruiting. Every one of his classes has been very good to great. His first year he landed Marvin Williams and JR Smith (imagine the great 2005 team WITH Smith? wow...too bad he went right to the pros). Then he gets Green/Hansbrough/Frasor/Ginyard. After that, its Wright/Ellington/Lawson/Thompson/Stepheson. After taking 2007 off, he gets Davis/Zeller/Drew in 2008. 2009 he already has Henson/Strickland/McDonald/the Wear twins. I believe he already has Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall committed for 2010. People can say what they want about Roy....but he's done an amazing job picking up the pieces after Doherty and returning the program to dominance.
