New York (52-45) is a season-high 7 games over .500 and goes for the series sweep this afternoon against the Oakland Athletics (51-46).

NYY LH Andy Pettitte (10-7, 4.03) will matchup against All Star RH Justin Duchscherer (10-5, 1.82), the current MLB leader in ERA.

In 5 of Pettitte's past 7 starts, he's allowed just 2 ER or fewer. Overall this season, Pettitte is pitching to a better WHIP (1.34 to 1.43) and GO:AO (1.78 to 1.50) than last season, and has his best K:BB ratio (3.03, up from 2.04 last year) since 2005 in Houston despite the fact that his ERA (4.03 to 4.05) is nearly identical.

Pettitte spun a gem against Oakland on June 12 in this year in California: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K with 10 GO.

Duchscherer has been a remarkable story in Oakland this year, his first season as a full time, MLB starting pitcher. The 31 year old RH has made 16 starts for the A's, allowing as many as 3 ER just 1 time this season. As his 1.82 ERA this late into the season suggests, he's been consistently outstanding. Through 108.2 IP he's allowed a miniscule 71 hits (5.9/9), with only 23 walks (1.5/9), albeit with just 66 strikeouts (5.5 K/9). His K:BB of 2.87 is actually below his career average, while his GO:AO of 0.97 is significantly worse than last season (1.92). Without boasting overpowering strikeout numbers or a high number of groundballs, Duchscherer's BABIP is just .210.

Duchscherer started against NYY in Oakland on June 11 and pitched very well: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

LH vs. Duchscherer (206 AB): .204/.254/.330
RH vs. Duchscherer (176 AB): .162/.226/.222

The problem is any lineup that ends with Cabrera, Molina, Gardner. That is pretty impotent any way you look at it. You simply cannot keep Cabrera and Gardner in the same lineup. Couple those three with a bunch of guys who don't hit with runners in scoring position and you see where the offensive woes are coming from.

Yankees need a RH bat that can either DH or play LF. Melky/Gardner can split time in CF/bench.

DH Damon
SS Jeter
RF Abreu
3B Rodriguez
1B Giambi
LF Holliday (Bay/Nady etc)
2B Cano
C Posada
CF Gardner/Melky

Bench
Melky/Gardner - pinch runner/defensive replacement
Sexson - 1B defensive replacement
Molina - Backup C
Betemit - LF/Utility Infielder

It will be tough today against Duchscherer, we need a "lights out" performance from Pettitte because it looks like another one or two run game from our offense today(Hope I'm wrong).

You said the same yesterday, so I will post the same reply.

I for one would MUCH rather listen to Kenny than the self promoting pompous Kay who I hope never comes back. I don't need an announcer to make the game exciting. Good incite and NOT having the announcer trying to be the focus of the game is preferable to me.

I think Kenny and Cone have been a very good listen.

NO ONE agreed with you yesterday. I expect more of the same today.

This may be reactionary... but how long before we start to worry in the long term about the FOUR year contract we gave to Jorge over the winter? I think we all assumed he would fall apart at some point but it's come to the point where if he catches three games in a row I am suprised.

And this is Year One. Imagine in Year Three: *gulp*

Duchscherer is getting over a viral infection that left him weak all week, hopefully we are getting him at a good time. He said he "had nothing at the all-star game".

He sent A-Rod again and he was thrown out by 6 feet at the plate.

I actually agree with sending Arod there. The A's pitcher has an era of 1.8, an opponents batting average of .180 and has given up around 70 hits in 110 innings pitched. The Yankees had 2 hits in that inning and the odds of them getting anymore was slim. Plus lets not forget that Melky was up next. Arod had a much better chance in scoring from second than Melky had driving in a run in the next at bat.
