again guys, theres several guys we'd be plenty happy to end up with. Porcello, Harvey, Mesoraco, among several others. The more overdrafts we see the better.
Even if Porcello goes, we'll be plenty happy with this round. Just relax :)

Thanks for letting us know about Porcello. You were sure the Diamondbacks were going to take him. Then you were sure the Giants were going to take him. Now you are sure the Tigers are going to take him. Thanks for letting us know.

06-07-07, 02:09 PM
historically detroit leans away from taking hs pitchers, especially with that high of contract demands. last year their first 7 picks were college players i believe, and the year before that they spent big money on maybin but they are more likely to spend on a hs position player than a pitcher. thats the only reason why they might pass on porcello.

OK, the next 3 teams are not going to take Porcello so we can take a breather.
If SF is going to play the "draft three, sign one or two" strategy, they'll wait until the 22nd pick at least to grab Porcello. They'd wait until the 29th pick if they were sure he'd still be there. If they do that and manage to sign him, they can throw Bumgarner and Mr. #22 back and wind up with 10a and 22a next year.

I just sent out an email to all the remaining teams except the Yankees and told them that Porcello is related to Carl Pavano. And teams are staying away.
Soriambi
06-07-07, 02:11 PM
The way the MLB draft works it allows the Yankees to get players that fall to them because smaller market teams don't want to meet the contract demands. Porcello (and his agent Boras) are asking for $10M guaranteed, which is a huge amount of money for a HS pitcher. Most teams won't even think about giving him that kind of money.
Do you think he's worth that kind of risk for the Yankees? I don't know if it's wise to guarantee 10 million to any prospect.

Because they like another pitcher just as much, or close to as much, as Porcello that is asking for $7M less than Porcello... They just spent a ton of money on Miller so maybe they will go the cheaper route this year. This is my hope.
Just pray Alderson slips. At least if they do take Porcello over him, there's a good chance we could grab Alderson.

It's not my money so I say YES!
Personally, I think the Yankees should use their financial advantages in the draft. It's better for the Yanks to use it here as this money isn't luxury taxed.
And, it sure as hell is better than giving a lot more money to the likes of Pavano and Wright, etc. If you spend a lot of money on the draft and get the best prospects because of it, you'll be able to save money on your ML team.

Is there a link to some info about Porcello I can read?
His SR:
Scouting Report: The top pitcher in the long awaited, much anticipated high school Class of 2007, Porcello was tabbed as a can't-miss prospect by the time he was a 15-year-old on the showcase circuit. His maternal grandfather, Sam Dente, played shortstop in the majors, appearing in the 1954 World Series with the Indians. Porcello has shown steady improvement during his prep career, and was pitching at his best heading down the stretch, tossing a seven-inning perfect game for the nation's No. 1 high school team in May. He's long, lean, athletic and projectable with a clean delivery. His fastball sits at 93-95, touching 98. He holds his velocity deep into outings. He throws a tight curveball at 74-76 and a harder, sharp-breaking slider at 80-82. He shows feel for his changeup. He can spot his fastball to both sides of the plate, and mixes his pitches effectively. He tends to finish his delivery across his body, and if he improved his extension, his stuff could have better life, which would make him profile as a true top-of-the-rotation pitcher. He still is likely to be the first high school pitcher selected.

Royals would most likely have taken him at #2. Until recently, most people thought they still would but I guess Boras wants him to go to a big market and has set an insane price.

Beau Mills to the Indians.
You think they can afford to not come away with their three firsts this year?
I don't know if I'd put it that way. They'll try to sign all three, but the risk of not doing it is much smaller than it used to be. If I were Sabean and in the same situation, I'd try to use my last 1st round pick on the player I most want to sign (If I'm confident he'll still be available), especially if I think I may not have a big enough budget to sign all three first round choices, because it increases the value of next year's compensation picks.
He has a better chance of landing a true impact player that way than if he just goes for three easy signs.

Here's where the game theory aspect comes in
Even for the Yankees, the total development budget is limited. Say the Yankees believe there are a couple of Betances in this draft - and maybe a few top international free agents. Does signing a Porcello to huge money mean not taking a shot on hard-to-sign kids or some group of international free agents?
I really, really really hope that the sandwich picks and 2nd round goes quicker
