Last year the limit was 2 minutes.
my bad i thought it was 5, but 2 minutes is a good time 90 seconds to 120 seconds seems like a good enough time to make a pick

washington after baltimore is another spot to worry about... if weiters and porcello make it past those two we are going to be in great shape. after that the only team to really really worry about would be detroit
No way Porcello makes it past all those teams AND the Rangers

The Nats need pitching and have the worst system ever so I wouldnt be suprised if they pay up

I hope everyone keeps in mind its probably a pretty small chance Porcello gets to us... people are starting to make it sound like we are favorites. He's top 5 talent and it would be great, but it almost never happens (this year its a little different because it might happen)

metalboy15
06-07-07, 01:40 PM
The Nats might take Porcello here...

MaximMan121
06-07-07, 01:40 PM
Look for Angelos to wield the new rules (giving the Orioles the #5a pick nexdt year if Weiters doesn't sign) and the sporadic less than amazing scouting reports that surfaced on Weiters this year as leverage against Boras.

Angelos would love to see Boras take 1/2 of what he's demanding, and Boras might know it's in his best interest to.

Kulish29

10 bucks says Angelos screws this up and doesnt sign him.

Wow, cruel post from rotoworld:

Another college pitcher for Pittsburgh. Moskos might as well go see Dr. James Andrews now, because it's only a matter of time. Moskos has a very good fastball for a left-hander, but his command isn't great and some have suggested that he might be a long-term reliever. The Pirates probably would have been better off going with a bat, probably catcher Matt Wieters.

Jace
06-07-07, 01:41 PM
but he didn't go in the top 5.

But there's the new rule and the teams with real money are still to pick. I'd say 20%

with his bonus demands there is no way the giants take porcello. they have one of the worst systems in baseball and need every one of these 6 picks in the first 50, and they will go with signable guys and guys who can possibly contribute soon.

I wonder about these things too because they have 3 picks... If they get 2 guys they like and will cost them a lot, they could go Porcello at 29 (if he's even there) with no intention of signing him and get the new pick next year. They probably won't because they are NL and have no reason to screw us, but Texas could

I'm hoping BA was right when they said:

9. Diamondbacks. After overpaying 2006 first-rounder Max Scherzer with a $4.3 million major league contract likely to reach $5.8 million with incentives, Arizona won't risk drawing the ire of the commissioner's office again. The Diamondbacks would love for Aumont to fall to them, but they'll settle for the best lefty remaining.

He's asking for a huge payday, teams will shy off based on fears of not signing him. He's a Top 5 talent, though.

It doesn't. Because it's on TV this year they are stretching it out.

Jace
06-07-07, 02:03 PM
What about this draft strategy: I am the Giants. I pick 3 really hard to sign but great players. I basically aim to sign 1-2 of them. If I only get 1, I get freaking 3 automatic picks next year, plus more if free agents are signed. If I get 2, I just got 2 great players plus an extra pick next year

This would probably work amazingly well with anyone with a top 15 or better farm system already and some cash

Ahh, okay. I really don't know anything about any of these guys. I'm relying on you guys and the mlb.com tracker, etc, to get any info. It's tough enough to follow major league baseball and a bit of minor league baseball without having to worry about college and high school baseball.

jesterno2
06-07-07, 02:03 PM
and no, the giants have no history of meeting big contract demands, quite the opposite. they are usually one of the cheapest teams in the draft and take the easy sign, and nothing indicates that they are going to change that. they hate spending money in the draft and porcello is asking formore than theyve spent in the last 3 drafts combined.

The way the MLB draft works it allows the Yankees to get players that fall to them because smaller market teams don't want to meet the contract demands. Porcello (and his agent Boras) are asking for $10M guaranteed, which is a huge amount of money for a HS pitcher. Most teams won't even think about giving him that kind of money.

Our only hope on that is that they don't want to spend that much of a HS pitcher. They've already shown a willingness to spend big on a pitcher, but Andrew Miller was a college guy, closer to the bigs.

Because they like another pitcher just as much, or close to as much, as Porcello that is asking for $7M less than Porcello... They just spent a ton of money on Miller so maybe they will go the cheaper route this year. This is my hope.
