7 behind the new "Evil Empire" and 3 behind the Indians. This is getting exciting...What I would really love is to be just 6 back of the Empire, I can't remember how long it has been since we have been that close. I believe we got as close as 7 or 7.5 when we had that run a few months back, but not as close as 6 or 6.5, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Sox get guthrie *thursday so they should have a rough go at it. It's going to take a long time to catch boston so they shouldn't be too concerned about it right now.

If the yanks can win 4 of the next 5 they should be within 2 of the wildcard. It could be even closer by the time they face the indians. They'll definitely be smelling blood august 11th

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.
Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation.
We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.
And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:
"We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
We're going to live on!
We're going to survive!"
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

Don't think about Boston. Don't even think about Cleveland. The only thing to think about is winning, winning, winning.

You ever hike at altitude? You hit 13 or 14000 feet and the air is so thin that no amount of heavy breathing can get your full wind back. You look up at the summit you're aiming for and you'll start to think you can't possibly make it - you're too tired, don't have enough oxygen, legs hurt, the climb is oh so steep.

So you put your head down and forget about the summit. One step after the next, follow the trail, and do whatever you need to do to keep walking. You do that, and you'll get where you want to go.

The real issue is that the AL East was a wash today because Baltimore stinks.

When rooting for the Red Sox to lose at Fenway, you need to add one run to the Red Sox score for each inning remaining in the game.

So, 3-1 Baltimore in the 6th was really 5-3 Boston.

Try it next time, you'll be amazed how accurate a predictor it can be.

Haha, wow. That's a good way to look at it.

If Seattle does their part, that series could very well put the Yanks into the WC lead, IMO.

Once they have it -- and I believe they will sometime soon -- there's no need to stop there. Keep striving for the best record possible and see what it gets them.

I detest the Red Sox. I hate the double standard and the hypocrisy the Yankees have to deal with. The Red Sox are doing business just like we used to and nobody says anything about it, it is a load of crap. I hate Manny and his staring, I hate Papels and his "orgasm" on the mound.

The way this offense is working, which is the way it should work, it is one of the most prolific of all time, the Yankees can win any game they play. Obviously you can't win them all, but we have a good shot to win everyday as long as the offense is functioning. So yea anything less than a series win would be a huge let down.

I dont mind K-Rods celebrations at all but I hate the fact that their scrubs turns into triple crown winners and their pitchers (everyone not just the good ones) turns into Cy Young everytime we face them.

It was amended to account for the anomaly that is the swinging bunt. A few of these instances will turn out to be the perfect bunt.

Yes and a good one at that, but the emmergence of Buchholz and even Masterson has proven to me that Lester never really was on Hughes level, and that BA needed to have a Red Sox pitching prospect as good as Hughes. Now that they actually have one it makes the comparison last year and the year before that most of Around the Minors balked at then, seem even more rediculous. Not very rational of me to blame that on Lester, but i would be lying if I said i dont enjoy watching him get lit up slightly more than any other Red Sox starter because of that. Im sure Red Sox fans will enjoy it when Hughes has his first rough start with all the hype he has.

My philosophy on players on opposing teams that have serious illness/injury. I wish them a full and complete recovery. I want them back on the field so I can root like hell for them to get lit up if they are a pitcher, and bat .200 if they are a hitter. I am very happy Lester recovered from cancer, now I want to see him get lit up.

I don't have any problem with Yankee fans rooting for Lester to fail. That's perfectly natural. I don't have any problem with people saying he's overrated, either.

But I don't understand why his cancer seems to get under the skin of some people. Why hold that against him? He didn't do it on purpose, after all.

Its not Lester or his cancer that gets under people's skin. For the most part we are all glad that he has made a full recovery and is able to do what he loves again.

However it is the people that use the cancer as an excuse for him, when his problem is likely not related to cancer at all, that gets under people's skin. It personally does not bother me too much, but i understand the point that some people in this thread or trying to make.

Who is using cancer as an excuse? I really haven't seen/heard that. Most of his struggles relate to him being a very young guy, with lots of potential, who is learning how to pitch.

Neither Seattle nor Cleveland are better than the Yanks for the long haul. If there's a teeny, tiny, infinitesimal chance that the Yanks can take the Division, then go for it. As far as I'm concerned, Cleveland and Seattle are worse than their records indicate, and the correction will allow the Yanks to hold the WC with an iron fist come the last weeks of the season.

Well said. I believe we can catch Seattle or Cleveland for the WC, so if in the meantime they win a few games against the Red Sox to help make the division more interesting then more power to them. As far as I go, I am rooting for the Mariners and Indians when they play the Red Sox and against them when they play anyone else. It's in the blood folks, you simply cannot want the Red Sox to win any game.

There's two freaking months left in the season. I think we can make up 7 measly games in that time span. That's just one a week. Heck, let's say two a week because of the BoSox inevitable collapse and just hedge our bets for a nice, healthy, division win :)

Very true, very true. The Red Sox are a good baseball team, no question about it, but so are the Yankees. Just like the Yankees struggled for a few months, there is no reason to believe that the Red Sox are above struggling for a week or so. So, it wouldn't be impossible for the Red Sox to lose a few series 2 games to 1 or get swept here and there for the rest of the season.

That being said, it all means nothing if the Yankees don't go out and win a lot of ball games. We had our slump, so we can't afford another one.

We play 6 more times against Boston before the season ends. So if we can keep the gap close and win the 2 series against the Sux, then I don't see how winning the playoffs is unlikely or impossible. I'm not saying we'll sweep them in both series (but then again, who would've thought we could've Boston Massacred them last year), but if we can somehow get 2 out of 3 games each series, that's 4 games made up against the Sux right there.

Having said that, like others here, I'm not really worried about the Yanks winning the division this year. Being in 1st in the WC race and KEEPING that position should be / will be our major challenge and concern the next 2 months.

We are now three in the loss column behind Cleveland, Detroit, AND Seattle. And don't look now, but we're only five in the loss column behind LA. These teams still have a bunch of games against each other, too. It isn't going to be too hard finding a way to catch at least two of these teams, if not three or all four.

As for Seattle vs. Boston, you HAVE to root for Seattle to sweep. The division is still in sight folks.

After last night we are now two and a half games behind Detroit. It will probably change back and forth between them and cleveland and seattle. I think we have a decent chance to catch Boston, but a better one to get the wc. We will have to face Boston and win to move on in the division or in the playoffs so either way we have to find a way to get bye their pitching. If we keep hitting the way we do we have a chance. If our pitches other then wang can show us something we will be dominate.
