I realize that the Red Sox are a better team than the Yankees. But come on, give me a break, the Red Sox are trotting scrubs and has-beens out there and the Devil Rays can't hit them. Where are the Devil Rays we saw in the Bronx last week? Typical.

You really believe that the Red Sox are a better team than the Yankees?

Oh I know the standings show otherwise. But when you see these teams head to head, that is where I get the best gauge. To me, its no more than 50-50 in terms of one team being better than the other.

So I'm still not paying attention to the fact that the RED SOX LOST!

In all seriousness, however, I'm still not looking at this very optimistically. This series against Toronto could be a bad one with the back of our rotation going. So hopefully we can take 2/3 and run out of there.

SIMPLE MATH
The Yankees have 19 games remaining. Say they win only one more game than they lose the rest of the way. They would finish with a record of 91-71. If the Tigers are to win 92 games, they'll need to go 15-4 (.789) against the Blue Jays, Rangers, Twins, Indians, Royals and White Sox. As weak as most of those teams are, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, the Mariners have 21 games left. They take on the A's, Devil Rays, Angels, Indians and Rangers. To win 92 games, they would have to 17-4 (.810). Not happening.

I would like to be optimistic about those matchups but its tough. McGowan shut us down earlier this year and its against Moose so Im gonna give them that game. Marcum is a decent pitcher and you never know what Phil is gonna do right now. Burnett sucks but with his stuff you never know when hes gonna have a great game. Bad pitchers usually save their best games for the yankees. Im not crazy about those matchups but our offense is hot and usually plays well at Sky Dome Rogers Centre whatever its being caleld this week.

The Tigers can certainly go 14-4 in their remaining games - they have 3 with Cleveland on the road, 6 with Minnesota who are out of the race, 3 with Texas, 3 with the White Sox, and 3 with KC - they could certainly sweep Texas, KC, and Chicago, leaving them only to go 5-4 against the other two teams to go 14-4...

I mean, when was the last time you -- or any of us -- saw the D-Rays win such a crisp, well-pitched game? At Fenway no less?

That's gotta be one of their most solid wins all year, notwithstanding Boston's tepid lineup.

the Rays dodged a bullet. They sent in Wheeler (5.26 ERA) & Reyes (4.61 ERA) as relievers in the late innings against the redsox tonight and fortunately did not allow a run. Yet the Rays on Sept. 2nd, had the nerve to bring in their best reliever (Dohman 2.35 ERA) against the Yankees in that Yankee loss. Hopefully with Dohman being rested today, will contribute in a redsox loss tomorrow or wednesday.

I don't think it was unreasonable to expect that with Kazmir out of the game for the last 2 innings, that a 1-run deficit could be easily overcome. That TB held on is pretty surprising. They won with inferior relievers, and that's fine by me.

Nah.
They are concerned with winning their own games and their main closer is a little tired according to the reports (translation, Accardo's arm does not feel well).
I would shut him down a bit as well.
If he pitches all three games against us, then you might be on to something, but the Jays are concerned about getting their players ready for next year and making another run at the AL East big brothers, as they should be.
The last thing they should be eworried about is helping or hurting us.

Regardless of if he didn't want to use Accardo. He left the starter in way too long, then brought in a reliever when it was too late. Then that reliever couldn't get an out. He should have pulled the trigger A) before the 9th inning started. B) Once Halladay got in trouble C) let halladay get one more out d) gone to his closer. Period.

If torre leaves a tiring pitcher in the game and let him make the game close..knowing Mo was tired (he couldn't get one out?) and Joe Torre brought in kyle farnsworth instead to get one more out and he gave up 3 straight hits, this forum would start a lynch mob. That was awful game management

Right, the managing was soooooooooooo bad i can not dismiss the HAAAAAAAAAAA factor. He clearly made no serious effort to win the game.

PS and YES, for students of really bad managing, look no further than last nite, or KC and seattle pitching to a rod with bases open, playing DP depth vs damon with runner at third (gave an insurance run and kept the big inning alive) .......... we've been treated to some lately ............ !!!!

he definitely made an effort to win the game. but he was trying to get Halladay the CG and it backfired. He could have gone to Accardo and they still could have lost. He could have gone to hansen to start the inning, and they still could have lost. But in my opinion, he mismanaged that 9th inning. Much like Torre mismanaged the 7th inning with Pettite in an attempt to get him the Win. All managers make mistakes, some more costly than others

i had no problem with him leaving halladay in to get the CG or when he pulled him. it was leaving that guy in there who had NOTHING, not going to a L vs granderson, not going out there to tell him he is FIRED if he walks sheffield to pitch to ordonez ....... hell, not switching pitchers .......... it was as if gibbons was just yawning when his inept pitcher was giving the game away ........... and for the compare, pettite was gassed and had 29 the inning before and 120 the game before (bad strategy but at least remotely defensible because pettite is pettite and we have no decent L out of the pen) ........... this was more like leaving brian bruney in there to walk three, give up three hits, and lose a 3 run game all by himself ........... and not even sending guidry out there to try and calm him down ............

If Gibbons wanted to really stick it to the Yankees he could have given Halladay an extra's days rest and than he would have faced the Yankees instead of Detroit. I do not think Gibbons would have intentionatly tried to cost his ace pitcher a win. He just made a poor decision in the ninth inning and it cost him a game.

right, but maybe he lost interest after halladay lost the CG. i have no idea what his intent was, only that his managing in the 9th was atrocious. he had ONE out to get. why not try to staunch the bleeding when that guy so very obviously could not get it done ?? just try and imagine, if you will, the hue and cry if torre had been the manager and left bruney in there the entire time to single-handedly torch a game. not a perfect analogy as they don't have our pen, but i ASSUME toronto had at least a few pitchers left in the pen, even if they weren't going to accardo. it's not like a snap judgment call and you win some you lose some. it's like watching a car accident happening in super slow motion and sitting back with a big fat yawn.

ebas
09-11-07, 11:55 AM
Is there a justification or reasoning for giving a visiting team pitcher such an advantage in the win/loss column?

There is no advantage for the visiting pitcher.

If a visiting pitcher leaves after the bottom of the 7th tied, and the visiting team takes the lead in the top of the 8th and hangs on, he gets the win.

If a home-team pitcher leaves after the top of the 7th tied, and the home team takes the lead in the bottom of the 7th and hangs on, he gets the win.

This is from a couple days ago and and a few pages back, but I wanted to agree with CT85. After the starters both pitch 7 innings (or any amount past 4,) a visiting pitcher does indeed have an advantage when it comes to earning a win. The home pitcher only gets the offense playing on his behalf for seven innings. The visting pitcher gets one extra inning of offense (8 in this case) as he is the pitcher of record at the start of the inning following his last. I wouldn't call it a huge advantage, but the visiting pitcher is definitely more likely to earn a win in any given game.

Fair would be that you would only be eligible to get a W if the team takes a lead in the actual inning you pitched. The pitcher who starts the bottom of the eigth in the above visitor's example would have to preserve the newly established lead to get the W. It doesn't work that way however and that system would also screw up the saves system with closers getting Ws instead of certain Saves and middle relievers and set-up guys getting less vulture Ws as well. You could see a top closer with a season record of something like 15-2 w/ 20 saves.

The NY Post has learned, the AL regular-season champion will be given the choice of whether to play Division Series A, in which the if-necessary five games are scheduled to be played in seven days beginning on Thurs, Oct. 4; or in Division Series B, in which the five games are scheduled to be played in eight days.

The seven-day series features two sets of back-to-back games, with off-days for travel scheduled between Games 2 and 3 and between Games 4 and 5. The eight-day series features only one set of back-to-back games (Games 3 and 4), with off-days scheduled between Games 1 and 2, another between Games 2 and 3, and still another between Games 4 and 5.

what's everybody's feeling on a rainout in Boston tonight? When would the make-up be? Doubleheader tomorrow?!

Good or bad?

Considering that BOS have an offday on Thursday, too bad a DH won't really hurt them...

What are you guys talking about, the Sox game isn't getting rained out. I'm watching a 9/11 pregame event on the field at fenway right now.

Yes, they're playing at Fenway. Rain stopped in time.

Is it premature to say that RSN is starting to panic. :D

Wouldn't it be something if we overtake the Red Sox this weekend in Boston?

Gotta run, but I honestly thought Coco had a HR there. Couldn't tell if it hit the pole, but it kinda looked like it did. Either way, he grounded out.

How is Sonnastine (sp?) Pitching?

Is it anywhere close to being as good as he pitched against us?

Sonnastine already had a really good start against Boston -- before the one against the Yankees.

But right now he's doing better than the Wakefield/Snyder combo :D.

Hahah I guess that's all that matters, eh?

Well lets hope that the D-Rays can keep this up and the Yanks can gain some ground on the Sox!!!

Wow... do you think Torre is hoping to catch the Sox... avoid Anaheim at all costs.

We could be 4 out by tomorrow. This is getting tight. I love it.
