Unless the bases are full why would you pitch around Ichiro. Whats he gonna do? Hit a single off you?

Exactly--putting him on first via a walk = him hitting a single anyhow.

They have a team OPS of .769 so I'm not sure where .740 comes from. That's good for 4th in the AL despite playing half of their games in one of the most extreme pitcher's parks in MLB. This isn't even taking into account their numbers since the All Star Game (an .800 team OPS) which would put them as second in the AL behind only the Yankees - again, playing half their games in an extreme pitcher's park. This month their team OPS has been a ridiculous .901.

Their bullpen I know a bit about because I see my fair share of Mariners' games living in Washington. Putz everyone is aware of, Brandon Morrow has one of the best fastballs of any relief pitcher out there, George Sherrill has (up until recently) been close to unhittable, O'Flaherty and Green are both above average. There's no question that those 5 guys combined are amongst the best group of relief pitchers on any team.

That leaves the starting pitching which nobody would argue is a great rotation, but I still think we're exaggerating how bad it is. Felix Hernandez has been one of the best pitchers in the AL this year whether his ERA tells you that story or not. His xFIP is second in the league - ahead of Santana, Beckett, Lackey and everyone else not named Erik Bedard. Washburn and Batista are serviceable number three/four pitchers and Weaver has been a completely different pitcher since he came off the DL - he's consistently kept them in games for about 3 months now and has a 3.35 ERA since he came back. Overall that gives you one very good pitcher, one very poor pitcher and three average ones - not a great rotation but an average one and given the contribution from the bullpen and the offence it's no surprise to me that they're winning a lot of games.

They will still come back to earth soon, I´m not worried about them.

Drew is approaching a new level of non-performance. His fielding is just adequate, but he seems to have developed that problem with walls that Yankee fans may have mentioned here about their righfielder; he is approaching Bellhornish levels with him looking at called third strikes, seems to have turned into a "banjo" hitter at best as they said in the old days, very frustrating.

I am also starting to wonder if his sub-sub-par performance taken with his being the highest paid position player after Manny, has in a way "infected" this team with a subconscience lack of urgency for players who believe they are underpaid or not respected via $$$ show me the money. If the $15 million dollar man does not hustle, we all know the 19 million dollar man(ny) does not seem to exert himself on the field, its only human nature to have resentments, even if you are making millions, etc.

Yep, I mentioned that earlier and was told it made the Lugo family very happy.:)

I think the mediocrity thing is overplayed for them. They have the second best record in MLB since the all star break. They have lost just two games in the loss column to the Yanks since June 14th. Half of that 14 1/2 game lead was erased in two weeks between May 29th and June 14th when the Yankes went 12-2 while Boston went 5-9. If the Yanks catch them, it will be because they have played at nearly a .700 clip.

So get this - my husband and I are getting ready for work this morning and we have sportscenter on the tv. They are showing the highlights from yesterday's Cleveland/Detroit game and he says to me the Yankees are lucky b/c they get to play a slumping Detroit team. I mean what the hell! We get blasted for beating sub-500 teams and now we have to deal with being criticized for playing slumping teams too? So ridiculous.

You will notice that SportsCenter will not point out the creampuff teams currently on the Red Sox itinerary.

From Mike Lowell's Gameday photo, one has to assume that he is still learning to shave.

Two nights ago in Tampa he looked down right Yankee-ish -- haircut, shave, beard trim, he looked very nice and exceptionally well grommed -- a fluke no doubt.;)

Yep, I mentioned that earlier and was told it made the Lugo family very happy.:)

I think the mediocrity thing is overplayed for them. They have the second best record in MLB since the all star break. They have lost just two games in the loss column to the Yanks since June 14th. Most of that 14 1/2 game lead was erased in two weeks between May 29th and June 14th when the Yankes went 12-2 while Boston went 5-9. If the Yanks catch them, it will be because they have played at nearly a .700 clip.

No it will be b/c we play a slumping Detroit team 8 times while the Sox play the White Sox and Devil Rays. ;)

Well based on that, they should just put these next 4 in the win column instead of playing the games. It's funny how nobody (else) was complaining about having to play a slumping Yankee team in April & May, therefore making those wins illegit. ;)

Joba is an unknown to the Sox, and he is very tough, so my guess is that the Sox are not looking forward to facing him. I also don't think that the Sox want to see Andy Pettitte in a big game.

As to the scoreboard, I must laugh at the idea of Bobby Kielty (picked up off the scrap heap) pinch hitting for the $14 mil/year man J.D. Drew. Kielty, of course, then comes through with a sac fly as I am writing.

Since the AAA teams are all affiliated with somebody, could you imagine what a mess it would be? For example, send down Tampa Bay and bring up Scranton Wilkes-Barre. That team would lay down every time they played the Yankees. Plus would the Yankees still be able to move players back and forth between the two teams?
