looks like Okajima is right on with that gyro ball
All this talk of gyros is probably making Schilling hungry in the clubhouse
Okajima did alter the grip on his breaking stuff - so his ball moves differently than it did in Japan... You would think major league batters might figure him out by next year
He's also working much more than he did in Japan - interesting if there's any fatigue by the end of the year

More at-em balls for the Angels
They're outs in this game, but hard-hit balls do eventually become hits
Will be interesting to see if Papelbon has any velocity decrease if he's used on consecutive days

To be honest, the Angels are now close enough that when they lose it isn't the worst thing in the world. Off course, eyes should be on the East. However, LAA losing is just bringing the Yankees within close range. Remember, all the Yanks need to do is hop over one team in both the central and west to make the playoffs, regardless of what happens with them and Boston.

If the Yankees are patient they should crush Lester, he cant throw strikes consistantly. None of the 3 in particular scare me. If the Yankees stick to the formula that works for them(work the count, be patient) they will be able to handle all 3. Of course if they go into their swing happy/homer happy mode, it will be tough for them.

Tough break for Gagne...that ball hit Pedroia in the chest on the bad bounce. Don't blame Pedroia for not getting the ball, just tough luck.
Drew has been a terrible signing. What was Theo thinking?
Same thing he was thinking when he traded for Gagne.
Matthews has been a disaster. He talks tough going into Boston and then backs it up with a crappy series. Whatever happened to players who respected themselves?

Chicago is downright putrid. They're just giving games to Seattle at this point. I hate Seattle - always have since 1995. I swear they have to be the biggest overacheivers in all of baseball this year. At this point, I'm hoping that they keep winning while we sweep the Angels. Here's an interesting scenario:
Seattle wins the West
The Yankees win the East
Cleveland wins the Central
..and Boston wins the Wildcard.
No Angels in the post-season = I REALLY like our chances.

The Tigers have been in a free-fall for the past month. I don't see them gaining 7 games on the Red Sox for the wildcard. Seattle; on the other hand is only 2 games behind the Angels, so I wouldn't exactly call it dreaming. It's actually a very real possibility - especially if the Yankees can do some damage in the upcoming series with the Angels.

Yeah, Boston losing out to the Tigers is a pipe dream. And yeah, the West remains in the hat with Seattle and the Angels facing each other seven times.

True, Seattle is only 2 games back of LAA, that would an added bonus to beating the Angels, we would then only have to worry about whoever plays worse of the two.

If the Yanks can maintain their current posture with the Mariners through the Boston series (tall order, I know) then Seattle will be dust. Starting a week from tomorrow the Mariners have a brutal schedule with seven games against the Angels, five against the Indians, and three each against Detroit and the Yanks. And they'll have TWO days off from now until the end of the season.
