Angry Red Sox fan writes Mo's entry on Rotoworld.

Mariano Rivera gave up one run and put the tying run on second base with nobody out but still managed to pick up a save against the Indians on Sunday.

Rivera gave up singles to Jason Michaels and Chris Gomez before allowing an RBI double to Franklin Gutierrez with nobody out in the inning. That left rookie Asdrubal Cabrera due up in just his third game in the majors with the tying run on second. Unfortunately for Indians fans, manager Eric Wedge had used his only backup infielder, Josh Barfield, to pinch-run for Victor Martinez an inning earlier. With Casey Blake at designated hitter, the club had no choice but to let the rookie bat even though Kenny Lofton, Trot Nixon, and possibly Travis Hafner were all available on the bench. Cabrera predictably struck out and was followed by Grady Sizemore doing the same and Blake flying out to end the rally.

Yes, go Orioles, I agree...
but to say that fans of another team rejoice in 9/11 is beyond ignorant...soldiers are dying in Iraq, Red Sawx fans as well as Yankee fans... I live in RI and have to put up with a lot of Red Sux CRAP, but GLOATING about 9/11??? It NEVER happened...onlty a sick mind would make that kind of crap up to justify some twisted hatred equating war and baseball!!

I was chatting with a Sox fan on Boston.com when they had chat and yes, someone laughed about it and gloated. Never...say never. There's always one idiot.

No doubt...and as another poster said, they knew a native New Yorker who said we got what we deserved...the ORIGINAL post however, said that Red Sux fans were glad when 9/11 happened....that statement is juvenile, moronic and misleading.

Im pretty confident in winning the division as the moment. The best part of this all, is that Boy Genius totally screwed everything up by making a move that a lot of people felt was not even necessary. At the same time Cashman improved the team greatly by making a move he got killed for and bringing up Joba.

This is possibly the best sports day of my life with Boston losing. I was very angry at first about Gagne, but I take it all back. I am very, very happy about the Sox acquisition, and I think it's very, very solid.

uhmmmmm. four games is a lot to make up, especially with the strength of the Sox pitching.
Right now, the Yankees have to worry about playing a hot Baltimore team against their best starters that usually give the Yankees fits and Detroit while Boston gets four games against Tampa over the next week.

I hope they come out of this series only five games back going into the Detroit series then they don't look awful against Anaheim. The Angels have been kryptonite to this Yankee team for a long time.

If they are five games back when the Boston series begins, I'll be satisfied.

Remember, first place only counts on 30 September.

This is truly hilarious!

Still, we're far from out of the woods yet. Still got a tough stretch in the schdule to go through, and the Sox take on a whole lotta Tampa Bay next. Plus, as bad as Gagne has been, I doubt he'll stay this terrible.

I'm optimistic, but it's guarded optimism. I have to say, I'm really, really enjoying this season now.

As wonderful as today was for Yankee fans there was a bit of bad news: it appears that the Tigers have come out of their teamwide offensive slump. That's not good.
But, overall, I don't think Boston's schedule this week is all that much easier than the Yanks'. Our guys have to face Baltimore's top three, that's true, but the Sox have to face Shields, who's pretty decent and Kazmir on Tuesday, and Kazmir has owned Boston over the years. Then, the Sox have four against the Angels who playing decently right now, including a doubleheader on Friday, and it's difficult to sweep a double-header against a good team.

uhmmmmm. four games is a lot to make up, especially with the strength of the Sox pitching.

Compared to 14.5, 4.0 isn't a whole hell of a lot. The Yankees' pitching ain't bad, either.

When we played the Yankees early in the season, they were pathetic. Half their lineup was missing, they looked like zombies on the field. But when they came to our park for those four games in September, they were the most intense team I've ever seen. It was like stepping into a bathtub with Jaws. Everytime we turned around they chopped off another limb. By the 4th inning of the first game we were huddled in or dugout shaking our heads in disbelief. It was like we were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid wondering, "Who are those guys?"

I'm really tired of people giving too much credit to the Sox's starting pitching. They have two good starters, that's it.

They have the best record in baseball (for now) and that has to be respected. Their hitting has been below their own standards and an outfield of Manny, Pena and Crisp is not a defensive dynamo. The reason whey their in this position is their pitching, namely their starters. If the Yankees don't respect that fact, they're toast.
That said, I like the Yankees starters better but we all know that Rocket, the rookie Hughes, Andy and Moose could very likely throw a stinker in the same week and the Yanks are back to six or seven games out.

I love the fact that the New England media is in total panic mode but it's still August and a lot can happen between now and the end of the season.

The MFYs are the best team in baseball. They have everything going for them and the Red Sox are ripe to be humilated again in a couple of weeks unless they pull their heads out of their asses and start winning 5 of 6 games regularly.

And I don't want to hear one ................ing peep about SS or statisical probablities or unlikely historical runs. Because none of that matters one bit when the wins and losses are counted. No more hiding behind stats. The only stats that count are wins and losses and the Red Sox need to knotche more of the former, and quickly. Iit's time to wake up and realize that the Red Sox are in trouble of losing the AL East, losing homefield advantage in the playoffs and the nightmare of facing the MFYs in the ALCS where out pitchers, no matter how great they've been for 4.5 months, will be in deep ................. We have already said goodbye to any possibility of an early clinch and a rest period to prepare for the playoffs. That really would have been nice, especially for injured guys like Papi and potentially overworked/untested pitchers like Okaji/Matsuzaka.

This is not a 'sky is falling' sentiment... it is reality.

We've hit Matsuzaka, Beckett, Schilling, and Wakefield hard twice, each. Tavarez has been the only one to shut this offense down. They don't really scare me, they had a head start in April with us trotting out Karstens, Wright, Rasner, and Igawa. Now we have five legit starters, our bench and bullpen have drastically improved. Well the main thing is that they have a 4 game lead, and in any other circumstances, that would be considered difficult to overcome, so you're right, it's still an uphill battle to take them down. However the past 2.5 months have shown the true caliber of the teams IMO. The Yankees are better team. The question is can the Red Sox "run out the clock" so to speak. Playing 5 games better than a decent team over 6 weeks, when you're about to go through a hellacious stretch isn't easy. However the Yankees are the best team in baseball, and I'm confident if they stumble in this upcoming 17 game stretch, they can right themselves for a furious September against largely inept competition.

they had gammons on baseball tonight yesterday...and the look on his face, the tone of his voice, the pause....he knows damn well the yankees are scaring the crap out of boston right now.

The Beast is coming. They hear its footsteps. They feel the ground beneath them shudder. Their hairs arise as their spines start tingling. Women and children begin to scream as dirt dogs pace nervously about.

Soon, it will be upon them...the carnage will commence. Boston Massacre part two. Bwahahahahaha!

Lord have mercy on their souls...proceed.

This race is over.

If both teams play at their post-ASB winning pct the rest of the way (and the Yanks are on fire and have pitching reinforcements, so with the way we're playing, even with the tougher schedule, I don't think it will be a problem):

Yanks: 34-11 => 100-62
Red Sox: 26-19 => 96-66

Yankees win the East by 4 games. Phillips is an idiot.

(Lock the thread.)

It's pretty quiet up here in Boston. I can hear crickets in my office. Usually Monday is a lively day, lots of chatter; especially in regards to the sox '"you see Saturdays game, I was there, Tek was wicked good." The two sox elders in the office, who always talk (and especially run their mouth to me, usually pretty funny, too), just shook their heads at one another for the first time this season and walked by each other, no words exchanged. Very gloomy, here. Just thought I'd share.

Thank you Wade, yes the same scenario is playing out all over Massachusetts. Today there has been amazingly little talk about the Red Sox in my office. In fact a gag order has been placed on Red Sox conversations. Here is how the decision was handed down.

As for the Red Sox blowing games, I love it. I have a friend I graduated with who was a Braves fan. After the Sox won the WS, the Red Sox became his 1B team and he bought plenty of their apparel. This weekend he drove quite a few miles to go to the series only to watch Boston lose two of three. I couldn't have been happier. I hope he was also attacked by an actual Oriole.

Don't worry about seattle. They're not a bad team, but they're playing at the same clip as always. They barely score more runs than they give up..They're a .550 team and will play out the season at about that clip. They haven't had any marked improvement, they're just currently on the radar.

.500 after April

The Mariners starters actually have a losing record, the pen has saved them. That is not likely to continue..
Only 2 teams have ever made the playoffs with their starters having a losing record.
The immortal 2005 Padres who blistered the season at a 82-80 clip, and the dreadnought 84 Royals who went a devastating 84-78.

The numbers are against the Mariners. They'll need to turn it around or hope for the luckiest season in baseball history to continue.
If we play those guys right now, it'd get ugly really fast..

My question is, how in the world is Horacio Ramirez 7-3? The guy has a 7.12 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP. Batters are hitting .337 off of him, he walks 3.89/9IP and has a k/bb ratio of exactly 1.00. How is it possible that this man is not losing the vast majority of games he pitches?

I think the bullpen is helping to skew the stats for the Mariners. It's pretty much lights out and probably the best in the AL. It will be interesting to see how it plays out with the Angels down the stretch in the AL West.

2007 Wakefield has 14 wins. he can't be THAT bad. He hasn't reached Tavarez level yet.

Really? Think about it. Fans like most who post here are excited to anticipate the future and prospects. The Yankee system was pretty bad and Navarro, along with Cano and Duncan, E., were about all that people had to anticipate back then.

I know what you mean, but he was never a big loss.

Yeah, wins are a terrific way to judge a pitcher. Nevermind the 4.81 ERA and declining walk and strikeout numbers coming into this game.

did any of you expect to win the division this week? Its going to take about a month before we finally catch them. We just have to treat The Gauntlet the same way we went through the run and hope detroit and cleveland win every game they play except against us.

Uh no, but I expected a few runs off of Wakefield to be honest with you.

Believe it or not, he's had nine games where he went more than six innings and allowed one ER or less. It's just that he's had several terrible starts (including a few against us) to more than offset those.

And I agree with you 100 percent about Wake the person, he seems like a really good guy.

Although King Felix has thrown 55 pitches through 2 innings. Hopefully they can get him out of there after 5 and get a shot before they turn it over to the back end of the pen.

Maybe, but while everyone on ESPN drooled over Boston's pen for the first four months of the season, they failed to even recognize Seattle's, which is even better with Putz on the back end...

The M's bullpen is 23-7 with 35 saves, both AL bests
