I think the Colts will win, and will wait before i predict the score.

I'll bring this over from the other thread:

O/U 48.5
May take the Bears with those points. I would have set it at 4.5 myself.

Tough call on the spread. I still think any AFC team is way better then any NFC team. I think the Colts will win by at least 10.

My SB prediction a few weeks ago was Colts/Saints. At least I got one of them right...
Anyway, I'm taking the Colts to win, but I don't know if I take them with a 7-point spread.

I could see this line moving down as the Bears will attract more money from their fanbase alone. Could be wrong, but lock in the 7 now for the Bears and wait if you want to be the Colts.
Definitely like the over on this one.

Dare I say, the Colts seem a lot like the 2004 Red Sox, finally getting over their nemesis. Throw out any cliche you want, but it just seems like Indy's year.

Book it.
I don't think the NFL will allow this Thread. I think using the term SB is strictly forbidden. I believe this Thread title will need to be changed to:
The Big Game thread: Colts vs. Bears
or
The BG thread: Colts vs. Bears

I had the same thoughts a while back...didn't post them for fear of being accused of trolling. But yeah, there are a lot of similarities between the '04 Sox and these Colts, especially a nice collection of talent and the (overdue?) ridding of a nemesis.
And, I suspect, a championship, two weeks hence.

Best argument I can come up with is that defense plays a big role in playoff football, and the Bears' defense is substantially better than that of the Colts. Whether that will offset how much better the Colts' offense is than that of the Bears is a fair question (and I think the answer is "no"), but I can see where Bears fans would have at least some cause for optimism.

Very excited. This Super Bowl will have good ratings. Chicago will carry the Mid West. The Peyton Manning factor is the big one though. He is the face of the NFL and is finally playing in the Super Bowl.

It would of been like the Sox beating the Yanks in 04, only to lose to the Cards in the WS. If Manning plays horrible and the Colts lose the SB, I think Manning continues to be hounded. If he wins, he's a free man.
I think the Colts win, and win big. I'll tell you what, thought, it's going to be the longest two weeks of their (and the fans) lives.

I see some similarites between this SB and the SF-SD game (not sure of the number). Steve Young finally got past the Cowboys and had to win the SB to be truly vindicated. He went out and threw 6TDs. I feel as though that is a strong possibility (not necessarily 6, but still)

I think the Bears can win for 3 reasons:
1) Solid defense. I didn't think they could withstand the offensive onslaught of the Saints, and they bulldozed that o-line. Up by two field goals and they pinned their ears back. Colts will really need to pick up the blitz in this game.
2) Thomas Jones/Cedric Benson. These guys have been extremely productive this year and aren't getting any credit at all. Don't sleep on the Bears run game.
3) Special Teams. What can I say, Devin Hester is the ultimate X-Factor. Terrence Wilkins is pretty good too, but Indy will need to make sure tackles on special teams to stop the Bears from scoring in that phase of the game.
That being said, I'd take the points, but I don't think the Bears will win.

I'll take the Bear's running game against the Colt's run D any day of the week. And as long as Grossman doesn't play with his head up his butt, the Bears have a good chance.
I think the Colts win, but the Bears DID just beat a NO team with 300 offensive weapons (minus Joe Horn). I think the difference will be when the Colts are down 16-14 their O-line will hold enough for Peyton to not get intentional grounding in the end zone

This is really, really, REALLY going to be tough, man! :)
The Bears are obviously our oldest rivals and there's not much tear shedding on either side when the other stumbles, but I think both sides tend to respect each other.
The Colts are an effing Dome team and their once glorious history, IMO, ended with Irsay cowardly sneaking out of Baltimore in the dead of night.
Plus, I respect Manning's play but I just have the feeling that he's a horrible teammate.

How can a GB fan root for Da Bears?
I tried to explain that, man!
I'd probably get in trouble with my fellow Packer Fans/Owners. However, there are some things like:
Do you know who suggested to the Packers that they hire St. Vincent Thomas Lombardi?
It was Papa Bear Halas. My Pack was actually going elsewhere until Mr. Halas gave his input. True Story.
The Bears certainly are NOT the Vikings. The Bears have a proud, proud History. They have NINE NFL World Championships. I don't like them getting closer to my Packers' Record, but I have some issues with THESE Colts. :)

Kinda makes the stuff about the "evil" Pats pale in comparison.
I was at my brother's that night in Arlington, VA, and the reaction around there was just stunned shock. It's too bad Modell won a SB and it'll be too bad if Irsay wins one too.

Peyton absolutely has to win a SB to officially kill the monkey. Elway played in 3 SB's, never won, and had that stigma attached to him. To completely kill the non-sensical talk of 'he can't win the big one', he's gotta win Feb 4th. I think it's total nonsense, but thats the perception.

If you listen to the so-called experts, the Bears are the worst 15-3 team in history. All the goofball ESPN experts picked the Saints last weekend and look what happend.
Just when I thought the Bear's defense slacked off at the end of the season, they're again pressuring the QB, stuffing the run, and creating turnovers.
The Bears still have a bitter taste in their mouth from their first round loss to Carolina last year.
Let Manning get all the media hype and distractions.
IMO, Bush's taunting fired up the Bears. The Saints got back in the ballgame and had momentum after his TD but couldn't do crap afterwards.
The jury's still out on Grossman, but as long as he doesn't throw dumb interceptions, the Bear's O will be fine. I like our running game against the Colt's run D.

ABC26 New Orleans TV news correspondents Liz Reyes and Glynn Boyd['s]...report on other indignities that Saints' fans had to endure from the Chicago faithful included taunts of "Where's FEMA?" and "You from New Orleans? Too bad you didn't drown!" But the highlight came during an interview with two female New Orleans fans, which went like this: "They have not been very nice ... (in background: "Super F*cking Bowl! Please, for the love of God, don't let Payton win a Super Bowl.
Although we may think that our televisions have reached the point of Payton-saturation, I'm guessing (because I cannot offer actual evidence) that there are still a few thirty second spots that come and go without viewers being subjected to a Payton appearance. This will definitely not be the case if the Colts actually win as the FCC will mandate that all ads on TV feature at least one Manning (and who in their right mind would put Eli in anything without his brother).
Please, for all of our sanity, Go Bears!

I dont know about that. Did you ever read "The Jordan Rules"?? Its a great read about MJ, most of it was his pre-championship career and I think it may have covered his first championship season. Read that and you will see how tough of a teammate Jordan was.

You don't succeed in the NFL by crapping on teammates. It's a completely different animal.
Peyton is getting close, but up until now, I really haven't had much respect for him. It has nothing at all to do with his commercials.

If I had tickets to go to the Super Bowl, I wouldn't even go, and it's not even for the "no tailgating" rule. Who the hell would want to sit thru those lame Halftime shows?
The best thing about the playoffs in the NFL is always during the Division & Conference Championships. Unless, of course, Green Bay is playing in the SB---but I'd still rather watch it on TV unless the game is at Lambeau. :gulp:

The Super Bowl isnt an event for the die-hard football fan. The NFL targets it towards every other person except the football fan. They know the die-hard fan will always watch no matter what. So they try to draw in the casual or non-fans who's football watching consists of only the Super Bowl.
The dumb halftime shows, the long commercial breaks, all the celebrities they bring out....its all catered to the non-football fan.

It really is. The Conference championship games are The Super Bowl. The SB win was nice back in '99, but the NFC Championship game against Tampa Bay was the SB for the gateway city. It was a hard fought game. XXXIV could've easily been a blowout for the Rams, but they had to fight for every down in the NFC game. Games like that occur in Conference games more often than the Super Bowl
26 and counting
01-27-07, 09:01 AM
Mike and the Mad Dog were just talking about this yesterday. Francesa said that he prefers to watch the SB in his living room, and I don't blame him. All of the security hassles make the event a long, drawn out experience. The biggest problem is the time that it takes getting into the stadium. For a 6:30 start, he said that you've got to leave the hotel by 1:00. And when the game finally starts, it doesn't feel like a real game because of all of the extended timeouts and the long halftime show. Most of the media guys don't stay for the game anymore - they're on their way back home by Saturday morning. The crowd atmsoshpere is very strange too. There's about 20,000 die hard fans from both teams, and the remainder of the crowd is just anybody who can get their hands on a ticket, mostly the rich corporate types who don't even care about football. So it makes for a very sterile environment much of the time. Basically, the Super Bowl has turned into a convention, and it's not really about the game anymore, which is kind of sad.
As for me, if the Giants or Jets were in it, it would be really cool to go. Otherwise, I'd rather stay home and watch it on my relatively new HDTV.

I like the Bears' chances in this one. I'm getting the same vibes when the Pats won it 5 years ago when the Rams were supposed to steam roll all over them. Chicago's Cedric Benson has tremendous potential as an NFL running back, but there was a time when he had just as much promise as a center fielder. And even now, when he's likely to get a handful of carries in Super Bowl XLI, he can't help but wonder what might have been. "I think about that often," he said. "I wonder where I would be right now if I stayed with it right out of high school. The Rangers offered me $1 million to play baseball. I said, 'One million isn't enough to make me quit (football).' I thought I was better than a million dollars out of high school."
Benson was eventually drafted in the 12th round by the Dodgers in 2001. He signed with them, but only after they agreed to pay for his tuition at Texas. He played two years of summer ball before failing to report in 2003. The Dodgers were stuck with his $100,000 education bill.

Yeah I don't know what the NFL could do but something needs to be done better to support the former players. A lot of former players are obviously suffering from physical conditions for the rest of their lives. But I figured the players were pretty well off financially after retirement. And that is shocking. The NFL can't control how former players spend their money. How players get into desperate financial situations is a very complicated issue.

Not all of today's players have mega buck contracts, plus the average career is around 3-4 years. Players have to make their money in a short period of time.
Let's not forget that players went to college to get an 'education'. It's a small percentage that actually go on to successful careers in pro sports, no matter their sport. Put that education to use if you don't make it to the pros. Now the quality of education their colleges provide them is another situation. Not to mention the low graduation rates at many universities.
I'm trying not to put all the blame on the players. The NFL can provide much better benefits.
Let's not forget that many former players, baseball included, didn't have the luxury of free agency. They were prisoners of whatever the owners were willing to pay. Ditka had the famous quote that Halas threw around nickles like they were manhole covers.
It's ridiculous that a legend like Adderly is barely getting over $100 a month in pension.

After thinking about this game for a while, it's a real tough one to predict. Would anyone be surprised if the Bears forced a couple turnovers and also had a fantastic return game from Hester? That could be enough to pull off the upset.
I think the Bears will end up getting 10 points from turnovers/kickoff returns and another 13 from the offense. The fact that Grossman's biggest positive as a QB is his ability to throw the deep ball and the Colts don't allow you to do that is not a good sign for the offense. And he's pretty bad at throwing the ball underneath.
For the Colts, I think they will move the ball on the Bears now overrated defense (overrated now because of the loss of Tommie Harris and Mike Brown), but could also see them having to settle for a bunch of FG's as the Bears D steps it up in the red zone. I wouldn't be surprised if the Colts managed 2 TD's and 5 FG's to get them to 26 points or if they got 3 TD's and 2 FG's to get them to 31.
I'll go with the former and predict a 26-23 Colts victory.

You mentioned a couple of keys for a Bear's victory....forcing turnovers and Hester.
My other keys....
containing Manning
Hester not fumbling kicks
getting the ground attack started early and wearing out the Colt's D line in the second half
Grossman checking off his primary reciever and not forcing the ball, leading to dumb interceptions
Tillman can't blow any pass coverages.
The Bears match up well with the Colts. Teams have been able to keep Harrison and Wayne in check this postseason by having their safeties play over the top, the Bears should be no different. Against the Pats, the Colts were able to exploit the mismatches with the Pats ILB's and the safeties helping on the outside by using the middle of the field. Chicago's speed at linebacker should negate this. If the Colts are going to have success moving the ball it's got to be on the ground which will not be easy.
The Colts defense has got to show it's ugly self at some point. Even with Vinatieri on the other sideline, the Bears have the edge in ST. If Grossman doesn't give the game away, I like the Bears
Bears 23 Colts 17
The more I think of it as well, I think the Bears have a good shot of pulling it out. You know they won't abandon the run like some teams have done against Indy. Couple that with Grossman's ability to just chuck it deep (and sometimes count on a PI call), and they could have some success.
Like JWF said, Hester has a chance to have an MVP type performance, ala Desmond Howard. I think the Colts have the worst, or at least right near the worst special teams coverage in the league.
To me, a great ending would be the Colts lining up for a game winning field goal, and having #4 just shank it. That would be priceless.
All in all, I just want to see a good game. God forbid it turns into a 2-3 TD lead for the Colts early. I don't think the Bears have it in them to come back from a deficit like that.

And I believe if Manning has just a good and not even a great game, the Colts still win. This is Manning's game to win or lose in my opinion and I think he will play well enough.

Yeah I hate this "the SB can only be played in a warm weather city, or a domed stadium" crap. How awesome would it be to have this game played in Chicago....during a snowstorm??

While I agree with your sentiment "its just not the same anymore"...I don't know if this 'ol' schooler' fan could stand the Feb. temps in Minney or Detroit's Tiger Stadium...(may she rest in peace..;) ) My first NFL game was at Tiger Stadium on Thanksgiving Day in the mid 60's with my Dad. Funny, neither one of us can remember the year...'frozen in time' so to speak...:D
Last years SB in Detroit's Ford Field didn't come close to generating the $$$$$ that this years SB will in South Florida's Dolphin Stadium. Face it, brother....it's all about the 'Bennies'....alllllllll about the $$$$...:D
btw...it's been crazy down here this past week....

Yep, it's all about the might green paper with the NFL and I know corportate sponsors prefer hitting the links or beaches instead of visiting the Mall of America or Detroit's casinos during Super Bowl week.
BTW, it's a balmy 6 degrees up here now, perfect for tailgating and throwing around the pigskin.:D
I used to live in Miramar, near the county line just south of Calder and Dolphin Stadium (or whatever they call it now), so close to the stadium that it would drive me nuts living less than a mile away from seeing my Bears in the SB and not having a ticket.

Ahh..I know Miramar. If you still lived there you could ca$h in, too. Turn that front yard/side drive into a "$30 per" parking lot...;)
They've 'banned' tailgating in the Stadium parking lot....'security' reasons?..

No tailgating sucks! 'Security reasons' is a joke. It's not like the parking lot will be full of Eagle and Raiders fans.:D
Of course the parking lot will be full of corporate sponsor trucks and their limos. Guess they don't like the seeing brats on the grill and people drinking beer when they could buy it inside at the inflated prices you mentioned.

I'm confident but not doing a lot of smack talk, it's a karma thing.:)
I'm predicting a close game but can easily see the Colts blowing out the Bears if they get an early lead. I don't see Grossman winning, or even coming close in, a passing duel against Manning.
I'm off to Costco in a few minutes for last minute party shopping. The grocery stores are going to be a nightmare later today!

I'm wore out from all the cooking and will try to take a cat nap before the game.
It's a Chicago food fest today. I made an Eli's cheesecake (finally got the recipe!) and did all the prep work for deep dish pizza except for the dough yesterday. The ribs are smothered in Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce and are slowly cooking now in the crock pot as i type. The only thing missing is the Italian beef sammiches.:(
Plus, the homemade spinach/artichoke dip is ready for the oven. My friend is BBQing some wings later (he's hardcore, it's a wind chill of minus 35) and his wife makes some of the best salsa I've ever tasted. They're also in charge of the Chicago-style hot dogs.
My other friend has it easy. He's just bringing the Goose Island beer.:D

The only reason I thought this game would be close is because I thought the Bears would have a big kick return and cause a couple turnovers. I don't see the Bears offense doing much and I still don't. Unless the Colts continue to screw up, I see them definitely winning this game.

Typical bear game, ugly and full of turnovers. Colts are obviously the better team on the field, but again, the Bears intangibles are keeping them in it at halftime.

Agreed, I liked seeing that too.
If the Colts had lost, Polian would of petitioned the league for all future SB's to be played in a dome, no matter what.
Sour grapes aside......congrats to the Colts and their fans. They were able to get through the AFC with no bye, beat two solid teams (Ravens and Pats), and handled their business last night. That's the way it should be. They will be a scary team for years to come.
I would assume the Colts will raise their banner next year with the Pats in the house. That should be fun. Now it's time for Brady and NE to ge the monkey of their back, and get through the Colts.:D
