View Full Version : Devil Rays want to move some home games to Disney World
They must be desperate if the want to move games to a 9,000 seat stadium
ST. PETERSBURG - In an effort to expand their presence in the Orlando area, the Devil Rays are considering moving three regular-season games to the Disney complex.

They could get a free fireworks show, though. Just stop the game to watch Mickey's show.

it's a minor league park, but they'd still likely draw more.

It's actually a very nice minor league park. I don't think MLB would allow it, though. Minor league parks are held to a standard, but one well below those of a major league stadium. The only parks that come close consistently are the spring training complexes. Otherwise, you woudl have field turf concerns, lighting concerns, etc.

Just a prelude til MLB wakes up and puts a team in adult Disneyland.
(Vegas baby).

I would simply ask that they followed the team around with a film crew and created a reality show from season one. And that it would be televised by a cable channel.
ESPN has an update
The plan has received approval from the commissioner's office, the player's association, the umpire's union and the Rangers, who traditionally have not drawn well on visits to Tropicana Field.
Permission is still pending from the Florida State League and the Class A Lakeland Flying Tigers minor league club.

Lakeland won't stop them from playing there. Interesting.....rare for them to allow an actual game to be played in the States in a minor league park.

Didn't San Diego play some home games in Las Vegas a few years ago?

sad thing is that minor league park is probably 3 times nicer than that pos they play in now.
I remember visiting it back when the DRays first were born in MLB with an ex g/f whos family lived in clearwater and she was very excited about it and how cool it was. She had never been to fenway or yankee stadium. I think her opinion changed after visiting the others.

Yes, I've been there a few times (I actually live less than 2 hours from it now). I had to suffer through the tomahawk chop there.

Ugh. I've never seen a more annoying thing at any sporting event before. The funny thing is, not that many of the fans were participating.

OT: We had a very "interesting" way of mocking the tomahawk chop at Miami/Florida State games :D. Agree very much so with the dislike of that stupid chant.
Back on topic: The D'Rays should move to Orlando permanently. It's a growing market, there are a lot more people there, and some type of Disney tie-in could be really profitable for the franchise. Much better than rotting away at Tropicana...

They don't appreciate MLB in Fla, whether it's in Miami or Tampa. Simple as that, and that's too bad.

I agree with the areas above, but if they had put ONE team in the Orlando area, I think it would have done well.

Colin Cowherd and Beano Cook were talking on the radio today about what college coach might go down to Miami, and Beano kept saying over and over that Miami is a horrible sports town. They should move the Marlins out of there (to Las Vegas or San Antonio) and move the Devil Rays to Orlando.

:(
The Miami Sports Media is EVIL -- a lot of them have ulterior motives and like to bash each other. When I was down there at school, the only two decent listens were Jon Sciambi and (once in a while) Dan LeBatard (who was at least amusing and somewhat sarcastic when he would throw out crazy ideas).

Orlando is just as bad, if not worse, than Miami.
Also the stadium at Disney is about 100 times nicer than the Trop.
That stadium is actually pretty nice. Ive been to both of the stadiums (Disney's wide world of sports and Tropicana Field) and the move makes sense. It may be a minor league ballpark with not that much seating but it feels more homey than playing in front of 30,000 empty seats.

The reason why Florida is bad for sports is that there's so much to do in Florida besides sports. You've got Disney World, Busch Gardens, Universal, and a few other amusement parks. You've also got the beach for relatively free entertainment. The only sport that does really well, I would imagine, is the NFL, because football teams only have a handfull of home games each year.
Just wondering, what was the Miami Heat's attendance last year during their championship run?

I don't see the problem with the Rays doing this. It sure beats playing in the dump that they are in now.

The only thing that will help the Devil Rays is to fold and close up shop forever.

Basically sold out, and 4th in the league. They actually averaged over capacity - not sure exactly what that means.

They should move to the NFL where every team has an equal chance under that financial system.

If the D-Rays come to Wide World of Sports I will totally go see atleast 1 of the games. Much better than driving to the Trop.

its too bad because I think the Tampa area is quite beautiful. I also find it surprising they don't get more people at those games, especially in miami with the high cuban population, not to mention other caribean people who come from countries that have come to really embrace and love baseball over the last 20 years or so.

tampa's fate was sealed before baseball began there. they never should have built that dome....the games should be played down on the waterfront just north/east of davis islands. the team would FLOURISH if that were the case.

I've been to that area many times. If they had built a retractable dome stadium overlooking, say the ocean, I think it would have been much better. Heck just an open air stadium with a retractable dome would be nice. ANY baseball stadium in Florida needs a retractable dome due to the many unpredictable T-storms in the summer.
